  • This videos shows how to build a mini Jacob's Ladder. It's a neat looking high voltage device. It creates an arc that is climbing two rods and growing bigger and bigger. The physics are explained too. The parts only cost $5 total.

    Does the wire need to be made out of silver? or can i use paperclips?

    • @bitluni
      @bitluni  Před 5 lety +15

      you can try paper clips. not sure how long it will last then. the less prone to oxidation the better. don't use galvanized materials. the wire might get stains that are insulating. You will have to lower the distance to overcome the additional resistance. it also might find find nice spot and stays there, even with silver. scraping off the stains help. I also determined that it's better the longer the distance between the wires since it allows a better convection.

Yea, they were pricey, but when you needed that one $1.99 part to keep the project going, it was wonderful. 🦊 Down the street was so much faster than across the Pacific. I'm looking forward to the day when I can click my mouse a few times and then go outside and have an Amazon (or Walmart) drone drop the desired electronic component into my hand in less time than it takes to cook a Red-Baron Pizza. 🤔 Did you you know that if you reverse the angle, and then bend the tips away and down from each other in creating a sudden bend, balls of light will shoot off the end. One rod must be a little bit longe, and you’ll need to unleash a hefty charge of static electricity to make this happen. A bank of High capacity static capacitors is required, and a trigger to release the energy all at once they are fully charged.

Do you might know why or offer some trouble shooting! Thank you, I wanted to present this this Thursday.

  • @masterluc
    @masterluc Před 5 lety

    i built it, but it does nor work too well. the spark only starts at distances below 5mm, and it does not climb most of the time. putting the glass on seems to mess up all adjustments i make. i used a bigger diameter wire (1.2mm), but it is only silver clad copper and it gets burnt spots. the switch is only rated for 1 amp, so i fear to burn its contacts too. also, maybe the AA batteries (alcaline) can not deliver enough current. on my lab power supply (set to 6V) it works much better - but then it's not portable. also it eats batteries very fast! any ideas what i should change?

    I don't know how to prove/disprove my high voltage transformer is working. I bought the exact part from ali express but after I wire it up nothing happens no matter how small I've set the spark gap. I used heavy copper wire (leftover from wiring the house) and 4 fresh AA alkaline batteries (measured at 6.2V which is a little high...). Is there anything I can check on the transformer with a multimeter to prove anything? I can prove connectivity everywhere up to the transformer and I check the voltage on the low side (I don't touch the high side with the multimeter...). I've never applied input voltage for more than 1-2 seconds, does it need more time than that? There aren't a lot of specifications on the transformer, but it seems to not want to be powered for long or be powered if the spark gap is too wide.

      probably. you can get them on aliexpress too. it's not suitable since the arc is not continuous. the frequency gets lower the further apart the wires are. seems to be charging up the voltage somehow internally. I didn't want to blast away headphone viewers but that thing is really loud and sounds very violent. It even might charge up to 20kV😱

    You could always take some methane that naturally occurs as a byproduct of digestion and try that.
    Ha, you'd do anything to get yourself out of making your own Blender tutorial, wouldn't you? Even use FreeCAD!

      You really want that I bore people to death, don't you :-D
      I tried FreeCAD this time since blender is technically not the right tool for mechanical design and I get complains all the time.
      What I could think of is a live stream using both. So the experts can teach me how to use proper tools and then I can show how I do the whole design in blender within few minutes

    The "transformer" has to have some kind of oscillator in it! Or ac source! Why are you calling it a transformer? It's actually a pre built spark gap module... Wtf
