  • Ardupilot is an amazing project, an open source autonomous autopilot software that works not only for UAV's but also for surface oriented vehicles, this is my experience working with it.

So, that is your objective now... Because I have a little of experience:
      1) Buy a telemetry radio to connect the plane to your computer, or phone. With that, you don't need to connect the plane to your computer with a USB. it is already linked by radio.
      2) The telemetry radio has 2 modules, an Air module, for your plane, connected to a UART, and another for your computer/smartphone (ground station)
      3) You can change the mission points in the field, or in the air with that module.
      Small notes:
      - a 100mW you will have a connection for around 100meters. With a power of 500mW, you could reach 1km.
      - don't use the highest velocity for MAVlink protocol only "baud rate to 57600"
As a ground controller, I use "QGroundControl"

Is there a (fixed wing and drone) parts list that is known to work out of the box with open-source software? Preferably, a ready-to-fly solution, just program either Ardupilot/PX4 or Beta/EmuFlight/iNav and fly? Something like the Sturdy Birdy 2 or Duraplane?
For example, the electronics always seem to be either the larger Pixhawk boxes, or the small-square-stacks (STM32F/H7 - Speedybee F7V3, Mateksys H743, Kakute H7 V2).. but not sure if any is capable of running any firmware. BTW, I don't see a OmniBus F4Pro on the ardupilot stable releases?
    I'm interested in:
    1) Autonomous Flying (Waypoint, Lua scripting, Return-To-Home)
    2) Sport-Tracking/Obstacle Avoidance (like the Skydio2+)
    3) FPV and free-style / flippy-flops
I understand Beta/Emuflight is popular among FPV racing, and ArduPilot for autonomous/waypoints.. however is there another that can do autonomous and free-flight? iNav, FalcoX?
And how does a custom DIY build compare with the features/performance of commercial product.. Eachine E520S , Mavic Air 2S ?

I am working with a Christian Missionary group that wants to use autonomist fix wing gliders to deliver critical medicine (anti-venom) to missionaries on the ground. The location is about 100 miles from the airport. A plane would carry the glider over the village and release it. The glider would land in a pre-designated location (way point). The glider would only have a rudder and stabilizer. This would be a one-use vehicle so the cheaper the better. I was hoping that you could recommend 1) An off the shelf airplane or 2) Simple hardware and software to achieve this goal. - Thank you for your time.

I never use the compass on fixed wings, too much trouble. The compass is only need to estimate heading when the plane has no forward motion, and since fixed wings always has this, you can simply disable the compass (and get rid off all the issues with having a compass).

You might need a new JC, you know that little thing called Jump Controller to avoid hitting the plane.
I like that content but it is a bit tough right now to jump into "systems" and out before you / I had arrived. I know it is calle "First Experience" and touches and shares your journey, but I am a bit lost asking why ardupilot now, why copter and then plane, where plane had been before iNAV based. Might be that you will add later the big picture, I was missing:
Why now ardupilot instead of iNAV ?
Is iNAV no longer an option for you ?
What do you understand under autonomous beyond loitering and didn't ardupilot had these features and mission planer too?
I thought so even though I have not used it.
I am writing cause in the past I had never such experience before like "feeling lost" cause your videos had what we call a red line, a well told logic story and here it ends with an open end or better 2 open ends like what next with the copter and what with the plane considering this title here is missing a Part 1 so I could assume a Part 2 will follow soon.
I am not complaining that it is crap, no it feels like an unfinished symphony with unknown fate - and I could learn a bit about a pure or basic copter on a wooden croos and the auto tuning feature of the plane and the really smooth proximity flights with the plane as the result of your "training flights". Might change with the next video, but I guess it would be great if you might explain the vision of the cannel (mostly know), your road map what you think or want to achieve and where we are in that video like overview over FC software and here ardupilot with the next upcoming episode ABC pilot. And I guess you have a plan for the year or even a forecast what to build and what to train or teach, cause they will end in a playlist I guess.
That might sound like a train schedule departue Paris 9 AM - Brussels 10 AM - Amsterdam 11 AM - Berlin 13 AM, but I mean it more in the general road for this year without a specific piece just like "this year I wanna cover an overview over autonmous software and show it in flight" and " 2 planes in mind , one wing and a rubber band powered plane" and so on and if you think you have a small electronic piece to talk about than you can put it between Paris and Brussel cause it would not matter to make a detour to Straßburg to talk about LED or gps rescue systems and alternatives.
I gave it a thumbs up cause you are doing the right stuff and you are doing that right, but usually you explain the journey a bit better or maybe I had been to deep in your past with iNAV and jumping into Ardupilot.
Great content, great video and keep going on.

“Ardupilot First Experience” , “Beginning my Journey…” how is this video not about ArduPilot? With all the very general statements, no specific explanations makes this video more about clickbait for your stats than useful information.
