    recording back in the day.

    In 1964/65, when I was 15 years old, I auditioned as a singer for a local garage band. The first song that they requested that I sing was "House of the Rising Sun." I couldn't even come close to matching Eric Burdon's power or sensitivity. I didn't get into the band.

    Many versions of this old blues/folk song since it was first recorded in the 1930s, but none I think better than the Animals. Damn! Eric Burden could sing!

    It was interesting to me that you remarked about Eric Burdon’s stature and strength. I’ve been studying (for fun) the History of Britain from the Fifth Century onward and the many cultures (countries and races) who invaded, enslaved, raped, conquered, merged and intermarried with the Britains and the British for two thousand years.
    Eric Burdon was born in 1941 in Walker, Newcastle upon Tyne, England. His father, Matt, was originally from Tyneside. His mother, Rene, was originally from Ireland and moved to Scotland before settling in Newcastle in the 1930s. He also had a younger sister, Irene. Burdon later recalled that his middle name "Victor" had been chosen after encouragement from the Lord Mayor, who offered new mothers £25 if their new-borns were given a patriotic "war name." His later rock/ soul group was called, “War”.
    There is too much too write here but I was about 14 when this was played repeatedly on the radio and it had a huge impact on the course of my life for the next six decades.
    Burdon states he often had a divided loyalty in his sense of place and identity. He was born to a working class family; his father did electrical work in some of the clubs Burdon would later play. Because of his father's line of work in electrical repair, the Burdon family had a TV by the time Eric was 10. In his autobiography, Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood, he recalls the electrifying moment of first seeing Louis Armstrong on TV which began his love for blues music.

    Nice job. Eric Burdon (like Burden) does have a tremendous stage presence to go along with that amazing voice. There are five or six unbelievably good songs/performances by the Animals.
    Then there’s always his song with War, “Spill the Wine”.

    Besides Eric's Soulful 50 year old voice (even in his early 20s) That classic 60's sound is from one of the first and iconic portable organs .. The Vox Continental .... Easily recognized by the classic orange cover and reversed black and white keys !!!!! PS they did this song on there club tour and had it so down they stopped in a small studio and recoded it in one take

    FUN FACT about this song: No one knows who wrote it. Musicologists have tried to track down its origins but it's so old that its origins are lost in the murky mists of time. It may even go back all the way to 17th century England as one of what became known as "Broadside Ballads." If it did originate in England then it probably came to America via some ocean-going traveler who may have sung it here in the U.S. and then others picked it up and it slowly got passed around. Also, if it did originate in England, then someone had to have changed the location of the brothel from its location in England to New Orleans, probably to make the song more relevant to American audiences. That is all speculation, obviously, since no one knows for sure what the original lyrics were in that particular verse. Another interesting thing about the song is that in some versions it's about a man lamenting his experience in this house of ill repute while in other versions it's a woman telling of her trials and tribulations at the brothel. I first heard it by folk singer, Joan Baez, a year or two before the Animals' released their version. In the Animals version the narrator is a man. In the Baez version the narrator is a woman. There is also a version by folk singer Huddie (Leadbelly) Leadbetter that is so different both melodically and lyrically that it's barely recognizable as the same song. Another early rendition of the song was by Bob Dylan about 3 years before the Animals. We will likely never know the full history behind this mysterious and captivating song.

    Yea man, this one was such a huge hit! It was great growing up in that era. Such a great booming voice. Chas, the bass player talked Jimi into going to England and just blew up from there. Really digging the background checks dude. Also, Eric joined up with the band War and had a big hit called Spill the Wine. The Animals had other hits, one was We Gotta Get Out of This Place and others as Eric Burdon and The Animals, cheers.

Nobody seems to have picked him up to react to but maybe you could be the first? Try 'I Put A Spell On You', 'Hi-Lili, Hi-Lo' or 'Rosetta' with Georgie Fame - another artist you should put on you reaction list.

    @KevinRCarr Před 10 měsíci +7

    Great song and really interesting reaction. Two different branches to this fork in the road that I will suggest. 1. The Animals: Sky Pilot, a song about a preacher in war time (sky pilot is what American soldiers in Viet Nam called the company chaplains.) This one has a bit of a bitter edge, and there's a long version that's worth listening to, but if you choose the long version video you can pretty much ignore the video, as it doesn't really illustrate the song at all. 2. A band called Frijid Pink covered The House of the Rising Sun in a 1969 recording, that I think you'd find worth hearing once, even if not for the channel. It's a little bit more electric and eclectic and jangly...think of the Animals playing in your garage, but they're all just a little too stoned to play it straight, so they have some fun with it 😇

    The Beatles came over the pond in February 1964. By June, the management of the Animals, gave them Beatle haircuts, Beatle suits and sent them over next. (The band had hated dressing up). This was a major hit, interrupting the Beatles domination that year. A few months later, The Rolling Stones, Herman's Hermits, and the Kinks followed.

    A cautionary tale, warning of a life of sin, personal degradation, and a feeling of helplessness. To me, the most revealing line in the song comes about three-quarters of the way through: "Well, I've got one foot on the platform, the other foot on the train. I'm goin' back to New Orleans TO WEAR THAT BALL AND CHAIN." Resignation to a life of struggle and emptiness. I believe the song is in a minor key, which adds to a hollow feeling, it's spooky.

  • @andrewclayton4181
    @andrewclayton4181 Před 10 měsíci

    I believe the house referred to was a bordello/ + gambling den, which had a sun painted on the sign outside. It was definitely of ill repute. A rock band called Frigid Pink covered it in 1970, with a nuggety guitar sound. It was pretty good, but this is the classic.
    Alan Price, the keyboard player, did the arrangements and collected the royalties, Eric belted it out in the club's every night but didn't make much from it. Alan Price left the group and formed a solo career with the Alan Price Set. He had hits.
    Other Animal hits include.... We've got to get out of this place. and Don't let me be misunderstood.
    If you like the sound of keyboards, there is This Wheels on Fire by Julie Driscoll, Whiter shade of pale by Procal Harum. Hold your head up, by Argent.

    As you've discovered, there are many songs in the folk tradition so old no one knows the original composer. The New Christy Minstrels had a hit with "Barbara Ellen", and in the album liner notes it said the song was "traditional, arranged by Randy Sparks" because its original composer's name was lost and it was sometimes called "Barbara Allen". The Animals probably made a lot more money than a cover of a newer song because it's not under copyright and royalty-free just like if the band had composed it themselves. Most rock bands learn to write their own tunes so they don't have to share their royalties with third party songwriters.
    So how about reacting to Frijid Pink's version? It came out around 1970 and it's basically a harder version of the same tune, almost like early Van Halen. I think you'd like it!

    This video is from a 1965 movie called "Pop Gear". They are lip-synching to the 1964 single that hit #1 on the UK and US charts. The Animals rewrote the lyrics so it was from a man's, not a woman's point of view, and the arpeggio guitar opening was unique. It was usually strummed. Eric Burdon was 24 in this video, 23 years when they recorded this. You should check out the live version on The Ed Sullivan Show. Fab live performance. Cut down for time because at clocking in at 4+ minutes, it was one of the longest songs evere recorded at the time.

    Back in the day ALL beginning guitar players desperately tried to learn this song...a good thing for them to learn changing chords fast and right hand flat picking. And this went on long after the song was lost to 1960's classic rock. I always thought the Animals were better than the Rolling Stones, a tighter band and a bad ass organ player. and Eric Burdon was a better singer than Jagger. Note: Too often today's listeners confuse something like this as a "Video" needed to sell the song. Bullshit. The song sold itself on the radio only, the "video" was an afterthought, on film, not tape, and they would slap them together as a performance, often for a TV variety show ot ween show., not a story telling gimmick to sell the record. This was 1964 for crying out loud, MTV didn't happen until 1982.
