  • Completed in 1908 by the Japanese, the 15.9 km "Old Mountain Line Railway" formed part of Taiwan's main western line. It was an engineering feat in its day, having the line's steepest and most winding stretch of track, longest tunnel, and longest steel railroad bridge. Until service was discontinued in 1998, it was a major artery for transporting coal, timber and fruits from Miaoli to other parts of Taiwan.
Today you can explore a section of the line via electric Rail Bike. One of the most popular sights is the broken Longteng Bridge, a hybrid bridge design combining brick piers, steel plate girders and steel trusses. It was destroyed during the 1935 earthquake.
