    I think the idea of valeriya being an offshoot of the empire of the dawn is the best explanation for their "special-ness", especially when it's implied through one of danys dreams that she was possibly related to the amethyst empress, and how the amethyst empress looks like a stereotype of a targarian.

    Fave dragon - going with Moondancer. As well as being a fiesty reflection of her rider Baela, Moondancer played a key role in the Dance by fighting on against the much larger Sunfyre after being blinded, mortally wounding him in the process.

    It's actually the Aeneid not the Iliad, and Prince Aeneas of Troy (Hector/Paris' Cousin), the son of Venus who founded Rome after stopping to make mortal enemies with Carthage. Fun fact, the Aeneid was basically a fanfic the Romans wrote as a new origin story because the Romulus/Remes one was a bit "Murderey" and they didn't really want to promote fratricide at that point in Rome.

    I wonder how the Faceless Men feel about Daenerys. I know it's a popular theory that Jaqen H'ghar is looking for a way to kill dragons, but the whole reason they rose up against the Valyrians was because of slavery, which is something Daenerys tries to bring an end to.

    In light of how much emphasis is placed in HOTD about the 'catspaw' dagger I'm starting to think that the Targ's when leaving Valyria had 3 dragons, and 3 swords (called Blackfyre, Dark Sister and Brightflame). Brightflame becoming Brightroar but also the dagger, keeping a small part of the original blade for themselves. Perhaps Aenar's father/mother/grandfather had something to do with it, or maybe it was something they were compelled to do because of Daenys' dreams, either way, we only know that the Lannister's got Brightroar in "the century before the doom" which gives George an awful lot of wiggle room for some Targ sabotage.

    This was a fun and interesting video, JM, and it brought up a lot of good points/points of interest for me to muse over. I do think that there's a rebuttal with the Faceless Men theory - time and history rewriting. We simply don't know if the Faceless Men's structure and philosophy are the same now as it was then. The ASOIAF lore is rife with information and books that were created even post-Doom that are lost/fragmented/banned, so it's not a stretch to consider the idea that the FM Arya sees and the ones who were around at the Doom might not even recognise each other.
    I'm not saying that this is the case, just that it's a possibility. It could very well be the Kind Man is only repeating a tale he was told but the Faceless Men's records (if they even have any) don't support it.
    I personally think the "obvious" answer is they awoke something best left undisturbed. Martin uses the "dug too deeply" line in one of the quotes you used in the video, and Aerea returned with horrific things inside her, while Balerion had been injured during their year absence. Which hints at something monstrous (possibly with fire larvae needing living incubators) and powerful.
    Edit: Balerion! You've got a dragon called the "Black Dread" who isn't a world eater, isn't a twisted monster, and shows (Aerea) that he's loyal and caring. Totally flips the script on massively large black creatures.

    Viserys told us what happened in Valyria and he didn't noticed 😂😂😂 when he is talking to Rhaenyra, 1st episode..
    And the same sentence justified Vhagar's actions towards Aemond.
    " The idea that we control dragons is an illusion.
    They're a power, man should've never trifled with.
    One that brought Valyria it's doom, if we don't mind our own histories , it will do the same to us"
    Dragons turned on themselves and burned the entire city to the ground.. now he know what causes the doom.

  • @Lespritdelescali
    @Lespritdelescali Před 3 lety +8

    Something that never occurred to me before this stream is how weird it is that the Targs were allowed to take their dragons with them to Dragonstone in the first place. Either there were other dragon families living elsewhere that were forgotten by history, they somehow got special permission to take their dragons with them, or they pulled off a trick that would have gotten them in a lot of trouble if the doom had not happened. I think it's possible that the unique volcanic properties of Dragonstone specifically is what makes the latter two options possible. Either the Targs got special permission from the Freehold to experiment with letting dragons roost in the caves or managed to secretly let their registered dragons lay eggs while playing them off as still "officially" residing within Valyria. I believe the family was supposedly in the dragon breeding business? One of the more exciting but less likely options is that they discovered dragon eggs on Dragonstone that the Freehold didn't know about. They could have been left from earlier colonization attempts or from the days when dragons were everywhere.

    The "gold of Casterly Rock" comment doesn't necessarily mean direct trade with the Lannisters, although that seems to be how the Valyrians interpreted it -- most of the gold in Westeros originates from Casterly Rock, so it could mean sufficient trade with Westeros *at all*. Aenar moving to Dragonstone matches up timeline-wise with when most Westerosi houses date their valyrian steel swords. Aenar moving to Dragonstone to avoid the Doom opened up an avenue for trade in Valyrian Steel weaponry, which brought Westerosi gold to Valyria, which was used by Valyrians to pay for faceless men to take out their political rivals, which ultimately killed too many of the fire mages and caused the Doom.

    really depends on where you live, vulcanos do not just randomly pop up somewhere, there are certain criterias needed to be met. Same goes for earthquakes, tsunamis . . . where I live natural disasters are, or well where, quite unlikely. Only in recent years did we start to get worryingly strong storms. No borders to the sea and tsunamis are not a concern and things like that. The biggest threat are the longtherm consequences of a massiv eruption quite far away and impact events that do not care about your geographie.
