Hi all welcome back to another video Dereck Reacts back at it again! This time around we take a look at another first time reaction with a PATREON request for Romeo Void and their song 'Never Say Never." It's a catchy funky song, which features an addictive sax, and punctuated vocals by Debora Lyall. Reminiscent to Blondie at times, there's lots to love about this band. See my reaction now!

#neversaynever #romeovoid #80s #newwave - Zábava
Debora Iyall is a great performer. She's Native American, raised in Fresno, California and went against the typical music industry image expectations of a female performer in the 80s. After Romeo Void broke up she went on to teach high school art in Southern California. Really nice lady - I follow her on Instagram and have chatted with her a bit since we've both lived in Fresno and worked in Yosemite.😄 I believe she may be recording again now that she's retired from teaching.
The entire album Instincts by romeo void is a masterpiece
It's brilliant. Very distinct sound.
Romeo Void was a unique new wave band in that they didn't use any synthesizers in their music. The lead singer, Deborah Iyall (pr. Ee-yall) is a poet first, who was charged with the lead singer position. A lot of her vocal deliveries were more spoken word than actual singing. I always confused her sound with Pretenders' Chrissie Hynde. This group put on high energy live shows with Benjamin Orr on sax! Their first hit was titled "Talk Dirty to Me" from their first album, It's A Condition. Never Say Never was their second studio release, an EP (extended play) which featured 5 new songs that would eventually make it into their 2nd studio album, Benefactor.
A classic that holds up really well 40+ years after its release. I remember the buzz around RV when this was released. Great stuff.
Early MTV. They were calling this new wave. Our whole group loved it.
This Song SLAPS! Love Romeo Void !
Originally included in the 1983 teen flick "Reckless," with Daryl Hannah and Aidan Quinn.
It was also in the movie Reckless in 1984, an American romantic drama film starring Aidan Quinn and Daryl Hannah.
Girl in Trouble is a temporary thing. That was her hit from that album that I remember
The video intro is a riot! Bands and video producers were doing so much cool crap back when MTv was letting them try just about anything!
I love this song. Cool guitar technique and the lyrics were controversial in the 80's. You find some of the lost gems that have faded into history. "A Girl In Trouble" was their other "hit", which has a smoother pop vibe.
Pretty sure I heard this on the radio in 1980-81. I was thrilled
Its is another anthem from the underground dance scene. Sounds of the 80s, the sounds were new and original because of the new synths coming onto the scene.
This was all over College Radio too at the time. If you want to hear a better Vocal presentation from her I suggest another Hit they had which was " Girl In Trouble".
Was really into these guys back in the 80s. They called us Void-oids.
I love Romeo Void. I first heard them in the 80's and was hooked. Too bad they never really made it.
Great song great live band
The saxophone is Awesome
I LOVE THIS SONG!
Love this song, haven't heard it in so long.
Great band! They deserved way more success than they got. Sadly a lot of that was because their record label didn't know how to promote them. They didn't like the fact that Debora was a plus sized woman, which is very sad. They have a few albums and some great songs. Hope you check out some of their others. Damn good song and group!
California New Wave punk rock 🖤
I loved the video
I always liked this song
This was a HUGE, gay-alterna bop back then.
Early '80s music and MTV at its best. #latchkeynation
4:30 Debora Iyall--First letter is an I, not an L. Like "Isle", rhymes with "Mile". It's a common Pacific Northwest Indian name.
Never heard about them. They must have been very “confidential” here in France. Interesting.
Do another Gary Numan song. His song “I Dream of Wires” will blow your mind! It’s on his Telekon album
So much creativity and experimentation in the 80's. Lots of songs gaining popularity on their own merit not just because they were done by a particular artist. Here are a couple more great songs that have faded into history: "Dear God" by Midge Ure & "Monsters and Angels" by Voice of the Beehive.
Let it Bee is an awesome album!
When you pick videos off the internet you may not be hearing the most popular version or the original album version. This is an edited version of the song.
Could you react to Pearl Jam?
The whole MTV Unplugged performance where they perform songs from their debut album "Ten" is perfect.
Apart from this album, some of their most well known songs are "Better Man" (Madison Square Garden live); "Do The Evolution" or "Yellow Ledbetter".
Another song that is fantastic and from an underrated album, "No Code", is "Present Tense".
Post punk music, beginning of new wave but not really. If u wanna ear a post punk and a beginning new wave album, the must have is SYSTEMS OF ROMANCE by ULTRAVOX. This tune is not bad (I don't know it) but not my cup of tea. In France u can have the same and better with MARQUIS DE SADE. Try it!
day 1 of requesting "la plus belle fois qu'on m'a dit je t'aime" by Francis Lalanne ! :)
Hi Dereck, please please react to 'El Amor en Ti' by Dimash. He wrote this specially for his Spanish dears. Live at Almaty concert. Totally EPIC. Thank you!
Great band just a shame the record company threw them in the gutter with the accompanying words "who's this fat chick" also rip Benjamin Bossi (sax player )who died only last year from complications regarding early onset Alzheimer's disease 😢
Hi dereck react to soda stereo-en la ciudad de la furia
Finally :-)
The group didn't last long unfortunately.
They didn't sign big contracts, and eventually one of the musician got deaf, the saxo player iirc.
GTA Vice City
React: Rezz - Someone Else
Unknown to the battalion especially in France. No more for me. There's better in the 80's, even some international "one hit wonders" have "marked" me more than this group or this song in the same decade, that is to say. There's nothing to break a duck's three legs. Next!
The audio quality of the video you played is TERRIBLE! The actual song is a vibrant edgy pop song from LA New Wave 1980s. They have a similar sound to The Waitresses who did "I Know What Boys Like"
The audio was fine.
Audio was fine, but video was awful. Your logo was superimposed over the video and the lyrics appear onscreen. Maybe you were sent a bad link or you didn't search for "official video".
