  • Neurologist Gregory Berns is using MRIs to find out if dogs experience emotions in the same way humans do. The brain scans may shed light on whether or not the animals actually "love" their owners. Terrell Brown reports.

    anyone who's ever loved a dog knows the feeling is mutual. My dog Dinah passed away in 2021. I was at school during my finals week of my second semester in college when my mom told me that she wasn't doing well and didn't know if she'd make it in time for me to be home. Well she did. I came home and she didn't want to leave my side. she passed away while we were snuggling watching a movie.

    Even without science you can feel the dog's live and care for you , When I was a kid , I didn't even feed the dogs my mother do , but they used to have fun playing with me , and sometimes I lay on the ground and pretend to be unconscious they would become worried come barking and pulling from my hand to try to make me stand up . they were really worried.
    Cat's on the other hand , you can't make a general study about them because it depends on the cat each cat has different personality , yes cats are like humans in terms of personalities , each love different foods , different games, some love to cuddle and sleep in your arms , some prefer to be left alone .. it also depends on their mood.

Animals weren’t created to love ppl, however they’ve been domesticated over the years to live and respond to humans in a way that some may mistake for “love”.

    Since dogs secrete oxytocin, they feel love: 1+1=2. The self-sacrificial behaviour of some dogs shows that their love is deep and strong. Truth be told, love is connected to material staff, to a lesser or greater extent, to us humans too. Rewards and punishments are the first way we learn love in our first years too. But later, love can evolve into more.
    Of course dogs don't want us to feel bad, but they experience guilt less deeply than us, because in most cases, they do not share our view of something being actually a problem.

    This study leaves much to be desired. Like many already have stated, simple emotions like love and fear, are obviously experienced by dogs, and clearly in domesticated cats, and even in some rare instances of wild animals. The fact that animals play with humans and obey them even when theres no incentive being offered, seems to indicate that they get feeling of love, that is strengthened by bonding, caring for them or just spending time around them. Id guess that it begins with trust to accept the food, follower by dependence and expectations, eventually an eagerness to please (the owners) and a general comfort of their presence. We all know dogs also have abilities that even humans dont have regarding vibrational awareness. Dogs "vibe" with the owners. Our dog doesnt always need any type of visual or verbal queue to understand their emotion. When we are distressed by someone whom we dont like in the room, the dog will often become hostile and protective, not just of their territory, but also the human themself. They appear to mimic the emotions of the owner, especially fear or stress based vibes, dogs clearly can sense. I truly believe in the old folk saying about animals "sensing fear" and how that makes the animal feel threatened by extension. But I wanted them to do experiments on the more abstract emotions that humans experience. Many swear that things like guilt, or passive aggressive, or vengeful emotions can be felt by dogs, but I think the closest they get to that is a more direct form of emotional mimicry than the complex connections made by the human consciousness to feel those.

      I wasn't aware any actual scientist had drawn a conclusion previously. It was behaviorists that did a few studies previously, but were limited. These MRI studies are the 1st times we've actually got to see their brains in action under various conditions, and it was scientists (neurologists) who have now proven the same small area in the brains of both humans and dogs are activated during strong emotions like love.

    • @ndc2520
      @ndc2520 Před 9 lety

      thank*reason Their emotions did not activate this area of the brain simply for food, or for attention from a stranger - in the same way it did when their owner came into view. This is the same way it works in human brains. There is a famous story about a Japanese dog named Hachiko who waited for his owner at the same train station every day for years, even after his owner’s death. There is another story about a German shepherd named Capitan who found his owner’s grave and waited by its side for six years. Dogs have always been attributed as “man’s best friend.” Now that there is scientific proof showing the link between dog’s and human’s understanding of emotion, humans may likewise be considered “dog’s best friend.

  • @callmewitcher5069
    @callmewitcher5069 Před 7 lety +13

    it's already proven the mirror test is not viable on animals such as dog, who's sense of smell is more important for them to interpret the world than vision -
    if you're unaware of the mirror quest, animals will have a mirror in front of them, with a mark or sticker on their face to see if the animal recognizes their image, and makes the mind/body connection . . . Dog's fail this test, animals like great apes and dolphins pass this test.
    however, because dog's use their eyes much less than their smell, when the test is replaced with smell the dog passes. remember dogs can see, but they see less colors, their sense of smell is so strong that not only does it just "smell," things, to dogs, when they smell things, they conceptualize the smell - similar to how sometimes when we smell something it triggers a memory or a visual in our head, but only sometimes - with dogs, every smell is deeply conceptual... and abstract. . .
    which is how and why dogs can be used to smell cancer, seizures, blood clots, heart murmurs and more. ..

      @telletubbie13 Před 5 lety

      The smell thing is 100% true, but the reason dogs failed those tests wasn't because they use their noses more then their eyes, it's because they're not as cognitively developed as us, so they don't understand or have the capacity to recognise that they're seeing a reflection. The majority of animals often do this.
      I haven't seen a dolphin do it, but apes take a while before they recognise their reflection and often attack.
      Tigers attack, snakes attack. Many animals simply attack their reflection. Probably because they get the sense that something is off, but don't have the Cognitive functions, or problem solving ability that we do.

    No. Dogs do not experience human fellings. Humans experience dog's fellings. It's all about evolution thru reincarnation. Life starts in mineral. Try the "double slit" quantic physics experiment. Life evolves by reincarnating in more and complex form of life. The human level is the hardest. Is when the negative aspects show up. The goal is go as down as possible then be able to climb from the botton line to the top. The goal is perfection. But never think you will reach it. You will not. The important thing is aiming perfection. Not reaching it. If you want to go north, aim north. It's easy like that, at the same time, it's hard like that. You must to beat nobody, but just your ego. Human life exist just to promote ways to win the ego. Evolve lifes millions years ahead us don't think "I" or "me". But "us" or "we". They put a collective of minds together to work towards pefect efiency.

      I know right? my dog Chichi is very sweet to the point she becomes extremely worried over us making loud sounds like coughing or screaming. The moment she hears either one, she stops whatever she's doing and immediately runs to the family member making that sound, to make sure we're okay ^.^ There was even one time at a party at my house, a family member got drunk and fell down, making Chichi instantly run up to her to make sure she wasn't hurt.

      Yeah exactly Dogs always will be loyal to us and care about us even if the owners care less about them. -_- Science like to try to show off we already know dogs loves us. xD Cats care about owners too well majoirty of them are laid back and don't respond till they have food xD i seen a video of a dog attacking a young kid and a cat came out and attacked the dog D:

      I'm 100% sure m dogs love us but your argument is a little weak. Others can argue that they are territorial and that they are protecting their source of food and shelter.

      TSDREX You have a point there. I was very sleepy when I wrote that comment and I didn't think about the fact that some dogs really do get sad even though they are still getting food and shelter through a dogsitter..

      @@cem4376 WHAT LMAO oh right but yeah we are not worthy of the dogs loyalness i guarantee that dogs will probably sacrifice themselves if it comes to saving their owners if thats the case
