My son is married to a canarian woman. He has lived in Tenerife for 35 years . Speaks the language fluently. Its not the people coming on holiday the protests are about. Its about British buying up properties And using them as holiday lets. It hikes up property prices .And limits the number of long term rentals for the local communities. Who can not afford to buy or rent . Because wages are low .

It's nothing to do with the tourists ' it's about the tenerife government making billions of the workers and not investing in cheap rentable housing for them. I would be pissed if I worked there and couldn't afford to live.

there is a lot more social housing in spain then the UK ,the main problem is illegal renting via airbnb and booking to tourists for properties that are not marked as for tourists so lack of supply for local workers . also all public buses are free for residence so living outside the tourist areas is the best option .

The people have a perfect right to protest to the govenment protect their home without the British media twisting things . Visited Tenerife for eight week Jan and Feb no problems and had a wonderful time. Will be visiting Lanzarote for four weeks Oct/Nov . Prefer not to leave it to the British media to make my holiday plans then I can decide for myself and be the judge pretty sure all will be fine.

My man, I am truly sorry about this situation. Believe me, these individuals are a tiny fraction of the entire population of Tenerife, let alone Canary Islands. I am from Tenerife -living abroad for quite some time now, and I am sorry. Believe me, stuff like this doesn't represent the community as a whole and definitely, tourism is essential now and will likely always be.
Thank you for being in Tenerife, thank you for your videos!
Correction: I admit I watched UK's news and they seemed to be distorting the whole thing. Jesus, I thought this stuff was only in Spain. Either way, I am sorry.

I live in the North with my family and have experienced nothing but kindness and acceptance from the people in general. Renting an apartment is a different story! Andrew got to the key problem at 13 minutes - It's the AirBNB free for all that is driving the problems and that is affecting the whole island, not just the South. Specifically on that issue the protestors have a point. AirBnb should not be banned but the laws around AirBNB need to be properly enforced. I can see some comments about flight prices, you can fly to Tenerife South from Liverpool this Saturday for 31 pounds, one way. I think we were due a slight correction on car hire prices as it was just getting out of hand - 1,250 eur a month for rental of a small car over the Dec/Jan/Feb winter months was nuts and could not continue. Walk around the two airports and look at how many cars the big 4 have available now, I think things are going back to a bit of normality on that front. The protestors are having a moan about all-inclusive Brit's but the hotels in Canaries are still charging big money for these packages compared to Turkey and that is already driving a shift away from Spain. For a 4 or 5 star hotel holiday, I would not consider the Canaries as a cheap holiday destination overall at least, not right now.

I have just read in the Canarian Weekly that 17,000 VV licences have been issued in the Canary Islands since October. Prior to this only 40,000 were issued in the 8 years 2015 to 2023. I guess at least half of the 17,000 will be properties retreating from the long term market. This is where the pressure on rents and availability for “ locals” is coming from as landlords pursue higher rents and more security in the short term holiday rental market

No, it has not put me off Tenerife. We stayed in Feb in Los Cris at a hotel. We were aware the restaurant staff had had trouble retaining younger staff because "they can't find a place nearby to live in" but we wouldn't have known. The staff were as good and welcoming as always.
My actual feeling was annoyance with the BRITISH press who are implying the local people are against BRITS.! What rubbish.
The problem I think is those renting out Airbnb , too many and that fault is the Spanish government.(not the Tenerife folk).
They need to restrict how many Airbnbs are available.
I do feel sympathy with the Tenerife locals trying to work in the tourist areas, but unable to find a place to live in.
We are going again later this year.
Tenerife is and will remain a fav for me, and I think for most regular visitors.
    We will be supporting Tenerife.

We drove to las Galletas and saw ppl living in shacks and walking into town carrying jugs to collect fresh water 🥲 - it was clear that Canarians were being priced out of the market..their government needs to do better and enough with the rich getting richer!!!

    Hi Andrew, fellow travellers!
I've visited this amazing island 2 years ago with my wife and am forever thankful for the amazing content on your channel! It helped a ton preparing, planning, buying tickets in advance (your Siam tips were 1000000% spot on!). We're 50/50 on returning this year with my inlaws, as they've been to Tenerife about 10 years ago and always wanted to go back some day. It's either Tenerife together or going to Egypt as prices there are unbeatable for the 5* resorts (and we're massive history nerds altogether).
Are there any big changes since 2 years ago? It was just post covid (I remember we still had covid travel insurance). From what I gather everyone's still welcome (we're not even British), but my main question is, since there's (fake) bans for the British, are overall prices dropping? Excursions, hotels etc? We stayed in a pretty 'meh' hotel 2 years ago, so we're on the lookout for a good one (strong preference for the South, we like shopping and dining in the Hardrock Café, it's sort of our 'must do' when travelling, collecting the Tees around the world). Any suggestions perhaps on a decent hotel that has vegan food options? My wife has some food intolerances and meat is really tough for her to digest 7 days a week, so she needs to balance it out with vegan dishes, espcially on vacation to prevent having heavy stomachaches for multiple days non-stop. At home its bad but okay, but if we're on the beautiful island for 2 weeks it's really a grievance if she can't enjoy everything of course.

The frustrating thing is in the office we talk about holidays, but then hear that dreaded 'i would but Brits arent welcome' when Tenerife is mentioned. Just shows the impact British Media has on destroying opportunity, consumer choice and business for the sake of a headline. Although, most of these people saying it probably never had any meaningful consideration of booking anyway and will no doubt end up in Benidorm!

Just sharing my experience, i was there 1,5 week around the Island. Los Christianos it was not that bad, Santa Cruz was fine, in smaller towns like Los Abrigos and El Médano i did notice in supermarkets and busses they don't want to help you if you don't speak Spanish, just very rude which i'm not used too. After getting the highest fare in de the bus when talking English, i spoke Spanish after (4,80 and 1,50 Euro is worth it right). Learn some basic Spanish for the bus ans supermarket i would say. On the beaches i had some weird experiences people felt the need to tell me that i am a stupid tourist, which i responded in good Spanish i am not buying a house here😅. In restaurants in my experience they were nice, be careful for pickpockets as this channel already said before.

    • @LAU-ik6dp
      @LAU-ik6dp Před měsícem +1

In Vilaflor people were really nice too by the way. For context i am a more adventurous solo traveller, so if you are someone who's in 4/5 star hotels, you rent a car and only go to restaurants in Los Christianos i think you should be fine. Wear a special bag under your clothes with your valuables! Don't skip the small towns tho, they are beautiful! 😊 I did everything from Tripadvisor accept the water parcs, can recommend, for surfing and hiking perfect island. Felt the need to tell what i experienced, so you are prepared. Learn some Spanish for bus/supermarker just in case and tell people on the beach you live in Malaga or something, it helped me😂 Apparantly they don't care if you have a house there hmm...😂

Invite the media for a chat Andrew this is damaging to Tenerife.
Tourists will take so much then go elsewhere and that would be such a shame to the Island.

Sorry a ridiculous response. Protesters want somewhere to live, sensible rents and higher levels of pay. So what does the Cabildo propose? Charge entry fees to Teide, Anaga and Masca. More revenue for the Authorities but no impact whatsoever on the main grievances.

OMG! You don't need to be a genius to realise that the Canarian economy relies massively on tourism. Now I can sympathise totally with the issues regarding availability of housing for the local population. There is exactly the same problem in places like Cornwall in the UK, which strangely, the media totally ignore. As you say, it is a Government issue regarding letting legislation which currently allows property owners to increase the number of short term lets purely for profit. We were in Tenerife twice last year knowing we wouldn't e having a holiday there this year due to other commitments. But we will be back next year without a doubt! Not worried at all about not being made welcome! Keep up the great work Andrew.

I’d be inclined to say a lot of the protestors where either ‘tag along’, bored students or even ‘professional protestors’ who attend various marches while not attached to any cause…a bit like here in the uk at the moment, having looked at a lot of the pictures of the Tenerife protests the first thing I noticed was student aged groups with free Palestine paraphernalia (which has nothing to do with it regardless of how bad things are elsewhere)
Also the tourist tax sounds good in theory but we are relying on government/councils to properly allocate the funds, and the recent digital time/temperature boards that have gone up are a classic example of how they waste money on stupid projects (I’d love to see if anyone involved had shares in the company who got the contract!)

A small charge doesn’t hurt anyone. To walk around the pleasure beach in Blackpool you have to pay for the privilege, no rides included in the price either.
