I used to wash my few clothes in a bucket when I was in Israel on a Kibbutz. You soon learn to ditch anything thats heavy and not important. I left quite a few things behind before moving on to my next kibbutz. Yes, it was a good time...meeting people and sharing experiences was the best.

I've lived like a gypsy my whole life having moved 25 times. I'm now 32. I'm not going to be living like a hobo with 2 kids and a husband. I like my creature comforts and hangers for my small capsule wardrobe. Back packing isn't for everyone

@@ah5721 I agree. Definitely don't want to be moving around if you have a family etc. I've put my roots down now in my 30s and I'm totally done with travelling, but in my early 20s I was carefree and loved it living on a shoe string with next to no possessions weighing me down. Is it feasible to live like when I have a family? Probably not, but I had a good time whilst I was doing back then. I have a mortgage, steady job and live near my family, I still try to live frugally because I know more possessions don't make me happy

Why we still cherish the memories of our school days even though we didn't have much money or items at that time. I think coz real happiness comes from being with the people and not with the things. Even a tea at roadside vendor but with good friend can make us more happy than a lavish dinner in hotel.

About one month ago, I was perusing the new releases on Netflix and scrolled across your Documentary. I was not searching for a change. My life is average, normal. I am not debt free, but not drowning in it either. I was not researching minimalism or even had any interest in any version of minimalism. I had no reason to watch this documentary other than to answer one single question birthed from your title. ‘A documentary about important things’, Ok. What do Josh and Ryan consider important things?
So, I started the documentary. Minute by minute, I kept trying to find the ‘gotcha!’.
    Some examples:
Oh they are trying to get you to get rid of everything, like a cult!
    Nope.
Oh, they are poor, so of course they live this lifestyle.
No, no, no. They didn’t stay poor.
Oh, they went bankrupt so they kind of had to start this lifestyle.
Not really. Debt was only a catalyst, but this is a lifestyle they have maintained for years.
Oh, they are selling a very specific version of minimalism to capitalize on it.
Nope, definitely not. There are all different kinds of minimalists in this video.
My jaw dropped lower, my eyes grew wider, and my outlook on life grew brighter as I realized I was watching/hearing the first genuinely original message in a piece of media I have seen in a very long time.
I completed the documentary and then watched it again the next day, thinking, maybe I was just being suggestible the previous day. No, your message was the same, my feeling was the same.
So I listened to the podcasts. No Ads?
Then I checked out your facebook. No Ads!
Then I looked into your publishing business and all the practices the business changed for itself to stay true to your message.
You mean it and you are proving it is possible to live outside this deafening, compulsory consumerist society, AND THRIVE outside of it. All you want to do (and are doing), is let people know that it is possible. You don’t have to accept this is the way the world is and submit to a life constant discontent.
THANK YOU JOSH AND RYAN. My life is changing in a great way, and it’s thanks to you and your documentary (and podcasts, and essays, and books… that I never had to pay for, but donated to later).

I think this has a lot to do with your "blueprint". My parents never spoiled me; in regards to gifts, I think the most notable gift was a play station 2 when it was already out for many years for me to share with my siblings- I was ecstatic. Alternatively, i remembered my friends bragging about all the shit they got for christmas or their birthday, 1 friend got a new $15,000 snowmobile, the other $750 earrings that weren't big enough so he exchanged them to get bigger ones. The funny thing is I truly never envied them. Now at 23, I'm probably the least materialistic person I know. I'm sure people who know me would say the same about me. I am completely happy and couldn't thank my parents enough for raising me like this as I appreciate everything i have and realize I don't need the newest thing out to be happy.

This actually rings so true for me. My most notable gift was a dog which was after years of pleading and we only got one because we were burgled (lived in Africa). My next most notable gift was a PS2 which I got in 2004. I can't say I wasn't envious of my friends that had moe lavish gifts etc but I am so grateful to my parents now it's unreal! Oh and I'm 23 as well, never owned another games console since m PS2 and don't really intend on another one tbh.

I'm a big believer in doing things outside the usual template made by society throughout the years. This documentary is really interesting and gives a good idea about minimalism to people who are not familiar with the concept. They look at it from all sides; money, fashion , environment, health (both physical and mental). Just great stuff, highly recommend if you want to broaden your horizons.

I watched the documentary on Netflix late 2017 after the summer I graduated high school
(gymnasiet in Sweden). I remember it was about kl. 22-23 in the evening(10-11 pm).
I was scrolling through Netflix to find something to watch.
This was during the time I saw a future going down a path, the same path you guys went down.
At the time I did not understand how I stressed I was because of that vision. 19 years old at
the time and already miserable. Because of my childhood of bullying and a very hard childhood
knowing that I have a disability(later I would I find out I had two disabilities).
As I was scrolling and looking for something to watch, I saw the cover art for the documentary.
What stood out and intrigued me was were you guys were standing in that photo. The simplicity
of the picture itself and the title. I put my mouse over the documentary. I saw and i thought "1
hour and 18 minutes". I started it, and basically changed my entire vision of the future. I want to finish with
truly thank you so much making the documentary. Going through depression right now, and transporting
the things that I own is easier than ever. This change has allowed me to contemplate how lucky I
am to have been born into the life that I have lived so far. Also to be so grateful for what I have in my life.
I fight the depression every day and you guys making thee documentary has made that so much easier. I have followed
you for over a year and the value to me especially the docuemntary makes me speechless. Truly grateful and
THANK YOU so much for what you do. Keep up the amazing work!

For me it is somehow directing me to a correct path, and might be saving me to some more supposedly troubles that I may encounter throughout life. It really opened up my eyes to not be materialistic, and always think twice before I buy something. I think minimalism fits me really well as I am also a type with a bit of OCD. Decluttering somehow makes me feel at peace and in sync with life. Hope I can buy one of their books as my inspiration. Only now did I realize that I've been living as a minimalist the past 10yrs or so. I saw my parents living in a 2 storey house with everything but they used nothing and struggled to even keep the house clean. I subconsciously started buying things I absolutely loved and valued. I only have 1 pair of shoe(s) 4 tops, 1 ripped jeans (it ripped when I had a motorcycle accident, so I ripped it more and made it fashion) 1 pair of pants and 3 t-shirts for wearing at home (ripped to my liking and comfort) in my wardrobe. When my bag tore, my first instinct was to buy another one, but then I thought, what would I do with this ripped one, so i... You guessed it! Sewed it.

I love minimalism. Actually, from my age of 14 or 18, I started to declutter. But those days I didn't knew this was a part of the minimalist lifestyle. Accidently I saw the video of Matt D'Avella and then I realized what this style of living is called. After knowing more about the minimalist lifestyle, I started to love this more. Also, I love to watch this documentary. Thank you.

Watching again to reinsure myself to let go more. I am so far along with minimalism but I feel that I need a jumpstart to launch my new life direction ever since my husband was diagnosed with a rare brain tumor. I'm asking myself "What is my place in the world" and to get there, I think I need to re-assess my priorities and minimalism is such a great way to strip away things.

I think the term "minimalism" implies some kind of lack, a lack of some thing.
When really consumerism can sometimes be when we are trying to fill a void in ourselves with "things". Which is really where the lack or void lives.
Maybe there needs to be a new term. Like fullism! 🌺

Best documentary I ever saw!!! I admid I see it on a regular base just because I love it so much! Netflix must think I have a mental problem😂. Thank you Josh and Ryan! I always hated consumarisme I buy what I need, nothing more nothing less. Been like this my whole life in opposite of my kapitalist family membres... I give stuff away when I'm done with it, give to charity the money I can spare. I spend money on true friends and people. Never was jealous of other people's stuff, I always thought good for them right? Hope you guys will do another documentary in the future.

I would agree that the " *_obsession_* " with things needs addressed. But that obsession and ones then feeling the need to go into some sort of aesetic life-style ... can be just as destructive, because both concepts are simply different sides of the same coin. Which is Obsession. A lack of balance. It's what all humans seem to have a difficult time achieving. *_Balance_* Material wealth and a number of 'things' that can be properly maintained ... there is nothing wrong with. As long as obsession does not take over. Not having much in the way of material 'things' ... there is nothing wrong with it. As long as this obsession towards minimalism does not take over the persons life ( _and yes that's happened too with young ones courch surfing to avoid things getting killed. Just going to live on other peoples couches for the rest of their life and they ended up murdered while pursuing that nonsense or the more famous example of Christopher McCandless_ )
Materialism and minimalism are two sides of the same coin
Eegads people. Dump ALL obsessions, and get some balance

I've heard this concept before but i never observed, and then i felt stuck in my room with too many things around so i looked for the solution how to solve this stuckness, whats the source of this feeling, without i realize the source is from our own "garbage" things. Thanks minimalist
