I’d bet they’d have talked about that play previously. Really smart regardless, as of course the natural thing for the runner to be doing is to look over to 1st base to see the call by the ump. Caught him napping!
Not really he stays on the field while a team mate brings his cap and glove, you must of never played before. Dont talk if you do not know what goes on.
Where the hell did the 3rd baseman go?!! Watch the end of the video. He just disappeared. Ump is starting "you're out " and the 3rd baseman is there, but when ump finishes "you're out" he is gone.
Love heads up pickoffs!! I used to sneak in from CF and catch people at 2nd. I was really close with my pitcher and my SS. So we all were always on the same page. Once a guy would get a big lead, my SS made sure he was closer to third than him. Then he’d also start talking to the runner to distract him. Once our pitcher saw him getting too comfy, he knew I’d be sneaking in. Once he turned and gunned to second, it was all over!! We even got one guy twice in the same game, which is super embarrassing!! Other teams began to try it, but you gotta be smart. Can’t have your pitcher throw a pitch when your charging second base from center. And you gotta do everything you can to stop the ball if he does throw it. I’d have stopped it with my face if necessary!! Ain’t no way I’m embarrassing my whole team by watching it roll out to an unmanned CF while the runner trots to third and then home!! It was risky but we pulled it off about a dozen times, and never once did the runner even get third!! Can’t quite say the same for when the other teams tried it!!🤷🏻♂️😂😂
Awesome play by the catcher and 3rd baseman. If 3rd baseman wasn't paying attention, plus know his teammate, it doesn't happen It was an amazing job by Catcher and 3rd baseman
The YES commentators didn't even spot that Trevino wasn't looking toward 1st base - and they replayed this more than once. I guess the production booth didn't give them the right view.
But it takes BOTH the catcher and 3rd baseman to make heads up plays there. Chances are they talked about this play before hand and looked for opportunities to make it work.
This is why you actually pay attention to the person with the damn ball. Not only that, but that third base ump, man. He looked so excited. That's an ump to respect.
I always coached my softball players "and then...". Told them "if there are 4 outs, or a double play possibility, go for it. Practice it til you get a 4th out & if they change a call or miss it, you got your next play completed." Leave NO doubt.
I’ve never seen that in over 30 years of watching baseball. Proving again, every game has the potential to reveal a play never before seen. And that is why baseball is the best game of all time.
Thats an old college baseball play that was popular in the 90’s and early 2000’s. Wichita State use to run that a lot and back pick 2nd. Every time the runner looks to the ump.
Not the first time ive seen the white sox caught out like this. There was the game ending double play in detroit where the runner didnt check to see if the ball was going to be caught or not and was well around second when the ball was caught and the relay to first was well in time.
Def did this shit all the time or would throw to third before strike 3 was called…worked 95% of the time until one ump told me not to show him up like that lol
Catcher always the smartest pure player in the field. A great catcher that can call a beautiful game and give people info on batters and pitchers is invaluable. Look how much Houston misses Maldonado. He can’t hit but those guys loved pitching to him
This is how A J Pierzynski started the Chicago White Sox rally in the '05 World Series! A J was thrown a strike 3 ball, but being a Catcher he knew he wasn't out until the Home Plate Umpire called him out! The pitcher was leaving the mound and AJ advanced to 1st base, while the man on base moved to 3rd base!😅 And after rule book revue, the play standed
Beautiful baseball. I got no problem with that ump smirking or whatever else because he was aware and ready to make a call. Angel Hernandez would’ve been staring in the crowd or something.
The 3rd base ump was even smirking a the fact that they caught the runner lacking
He’s probably been waiting to make that call since the first time he saw a hidden ball trick 😂
Umpires appreciate those players that have their head in the game (multitasking) while seeing the whole field. Well done, Trevino.
He put so much effort into the swinging his arm for the out he had to shake it off twice.
I find it annoying when I see comments like these only to go and rewatch the video to see the person in question has a completely deadpan face
Never viewed the play💩💩💩
The 3rd base ump enjoyed calling that out! 😂
Damn near threw out his own shoulder! 😂
He was very proud of himself
When they put that extra “umph” into that arm throw and cock it back a little more.. you KNOW the fuck w the play
Gotta love good baseball.
I noticed that too, he had a bit of a grin. You know it's some heads up baseball when the ump is smiling
That 3rd base ump was READY for it

I wouldn’t say always. We did have Gary Sanchez before.
They are the liaison to the manager. They control a great portion of the game.
3rd base ump was like hell yeah he's out😂
He even looked around like, "did anyone else catch how slick that was? No? Just me? 'twas pretty cool..."
That’s great baseball IQ right there
shuddup
Trevino is the most underrated catcher in the game. His numbers with runners in scoring position lifetime are over 300 he’s an all star this year l!
High IQ on display!
Angel Hernandez would’ve said the batter swung and the runner was safe at 3rd
Angel would have called it a home run then ejected the fans for heckling him.
Good thing a check swing isn't up to the home plate ump
Angel Hernandez would have called a balk and the runner on third would have scored.
Angel Hernandez would have called interference on the 3rd baseman for getting in the way of the runner.
@Valaran1 actually the plate umpire technically has the power to declare the swing by himself
My son started his tee ball journey and I'm not a baseball dad. Jomboy videos are helping. Thank you
Never seen that either. Very heads up and I wonder if this clip will spark more of this? 👏
