- Martha Wainwright's soaring yet delicate harmonies take center stage in her performance of elegy "Proserpina," written by her late mother, the legendary folk singer Kate McGarrigle, in filmmaker Matthu Placek's intimate video. Taken from her forthcoming album Come Home to Mama, the track was recorded in Sean Lennon's New York home studio and continues a lifelong musical dialogue between Wainwright and McGarrigle, who passed away in 2010. "It's the last song my mother wrote, and of course I also think that she wrote it for me, and for Rufus," explains Wainwright, referring to her critically acclaimed crooner brother, Rufus Wainwright. "We wrote songs together, ever since we were children. As we sing her songs, I think her voice can be heard in ours, literally through our pipes." Placek's single-take film was inspired by the premise of "Proserpina," which recounts the story of the creation of the seasons by the Roman goddess Ceres, who withholds the world's bounty for six months every year in protest about her daughter's abduction by Pluto, lord of the underworld. "It's all about Martha's performance," says the director, who has also produced music videos for Trixie Whitley and Hannah Cohen. "Martha's vocal range is insane, it's outrageous-I've never seen anyone like her."
Martha Wainwright's fourth album Come Home to Mama is released October 16, "Proserpina" is out now.

My 17 yr old son, the light and love of my life decided to e d his earthly struggle five weeks ago. This song has helped me break open and cry properly. Thank you so much. Martha. Your voice is the most beautiful I’ve ever heard. And this song is haunting my head
Sending you love and strength Sinead.
Sinead your suffering has been deep and challenging and has touched and also helped so many through your own voice,
beautiful
Beautiful as it is.
My heart goes out to you
Sinead I am so sorry for what this world did to you. You deserved better. Rest in power
Hey man (girl) )I feel deeply for you. I would love to be near you.
230 lbs with muscles, grit & a NYC attitude so...why am I crying listening to this?
Easily one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard. Credit to BBC 6 Music for playing it in the middle of the day.
Heard this song today 18th july 2021 on bbc 6 music. Always plays songs you just wont expect to hear and great for it
Makes me cry for my little poodle who died.
The way she sings this song is so moving. I am so very glad to discover this singer with such a beautiful voice. Wow.
wow bit of an old comment
Just the most hauntingly beautiful song that has remained with me since the moment I heard it. Ancient and timeless,
Severely Underrated
Beautiful piece of music. There is a version of this song on Sing Me The Songs:Celebrating the Works of Kate McGarrigle that shakes me up even more. Martha sings on that one as well, joined by her aunt, Sloan Wainright and several other strong voices. Through technology, Kate McGarrigle's voice is also heard. That beautiful it makes me cry.
lovely, haunting and stuck in my brain. Find myself humming this every once in awhile.
Exact same!
Brought tears in my eyes .. thoughts of my sister Jean died last year 💔💖 Martha's voice . .wow
@@johnhawken4579 I'm so sorry for your pain, John. Nothing wrong with crying. Here's to your Sister.
@@johnsrome8459 Thank you for your kind words your a star 🌟
@@johnhawken4579 You're very welcome, John. Jean was clearly very important to you & what does it take to show a little kindness? You take care, Sir.
(PS. I cried too watching this video today!).
This was the first song I listened to after my uncle died, and though I had largely been tearless, I dissolved into a ball of snotty tears. It hurts to lose someone that was close to us, obviously, but to think of what this would feel like for a god, that has no precedent, it I suppose explains smiting the earth, the theft of her beloved daughter by the outcast god would be so offensive. I will miss my uncle, and I wish you well with the loss of your mother, and everyone else significant that you've lost.
Martha: This song is extremely beautiful because of it´s simplicity and their harmonic details. Love the theme, the lyrics and the concept. But you did something incredible with it. When something becomes flesh through the love, the best pieces of art are created.
I first heard Kate play this song Friday, October 30, 2009. It’s a song for the ages. And now it’s been over 10 years since Kate has gone home to mama but I/we miss her still daily
Absolutely Brilliant!! She did her Momma proud..hauntingly beautiful
i always get goosebumps listening to this
It's so so heavy with a clenched throat, I feel it so much in my heart
Heard this song for the first time a few weeks ago on a CBC program... What a beautiful and sad song...
Beautiful song! I am a dancer, let the choreography begin!
Christina, Come stai? Update, please! Did you ever get involved with or create a dance piece to accompany this song? I would love to see it, as would many others.
I cry each and every time I hear this.
What a stunning work of art. Thank you, Martha Wainwright & Matthu Placek. This song & video are powerful medicine for healing fractured souls.
it is in every second....magic
I loved the McGarrigle's songs when I was eighteen or so, and now I love Martha singing her mother's last song, a simple song, everything burnished to the essence, as we all should be.
Gorgeous. Sang acappella on tour, just wonderful.
I listen to this song over and over, and it touches me deeply every time I hear it. What a remarkable family the Wainwrights are. I miss Kate, but I am thankful that she gave us two such wonderful voices in her children.
I just saw her in bexhill playing a show she played this and had 3 guys singing background vocals was beautiful
Not a dry peeper in this house. Oooh, how Kate continues to light that little candle through her Martha.
Trash Fire absolutely blew me away, especially the sad ending that was perfectly executed with this beautiful song. It will always be one of my favourite movies.
This is better than any high production value video out there, the emotion in her face overwhelms me. I love this woman so much!
KATE MCGARRIGLE--HER MOTHER WROTE THIS--TALENT!
My babba died 5 weeks ago. Aged 17. Thank you for this song.
Stay strong, dear Sinead. You gave us all so much... Stay strong till you will réunite with him timely
You can hear Kate. Very touching performance.
Like an auditory massage listening to Martha
Beautiful. Just beautiful.
Just broke my heart into a million pieces. Come home
this really touched me - bravo!
Beautiful, haunting, amazing.
Happy Birthday, Martha.
Dear Martha; Thank You ... You have been blessed with tremendeous talent.... It is really a JOY to listen to you .... Merci Martha.
Haunting, evocative presentation of a song with roots in Trad. (e.g. 'The Changeling Child) yet with the eternal ebb and flow of a simple yet unforgettable melody. Many thanks, Kate and Martha.
LYRICS
Prosepina, Prosepina, come home to momma, come home to momma
Prosepina, Prosepina, come home to mother, come home to momma now
I shall punish the Earth, I shall turn down the heat
I shall take away every morsel to eat
I shall turn every feeling to stone
Where I walk crying alone
Crying for
Prosepina, Prosepina, come home to momma, come home to momma now
Prosepina, Prosepina go home to your mother, go home to Hera
Prosepina, Prosepina go home to your mother, go home to Hera now
She has ṗunished the Earth, she has turn down the heat
She has taken away every morsel stone
Where she walks cry-crying alone
Crying for
Prosepina, Prosepina, come home to momma, come home to momma
Prosepina, Prosepina, come home to momma, come home to momma now
She has turned every feeling to stone
Where she walks cry-crying alone
Prosepina, Ṗrosepina, come home to momma, come home to momma
Prosepina, Prosepina, come home to momma, come home to momma now
It’s a beautiful and sad story. I wonder if a lot of Greek and/or Roman mothers had young daughters stolen to be married or sex traded and this was their plea that they could relate to the lack of harvest. If it’s how they dealt with not only the agriculture pains but the familial experiences that were their reality.
I cried so freaking much with this song
Beautiful. I look forward to seeing Rufus,Martha with family and friends perform this in London in December.x
So lovely. x
Beautiful
In my first book, Sam sings this song in the shower during his first, unbearably beautiful evening with Elli. Subsequently she chooses the song for his funeral. Utterly, heartbreakingly beautiful.
Love this!
This video is truly beautiful and so is the music of course
such a great song
This is so so so so touching....
such a beautiful voice ! and a very capable style of singing !
This is so beautiful
Beautiful song and video.
Martha.......Just thanks. xx
I think its amazing how she rarely blinks
Beautifully done ❤
Thank you 6music... Again
Extraordinary, but why should we expect anything less? Martha and Rufus have such a great pedigree having been born to parents Kate McGarrigle and Loudon Wainwright III!
Absolument Fantastique ♡
This song makes me feel so sad
As for me, it makes me feel sad and comforted at the same time.
At some moments I hear glimpses of her mothers voice or way of singing, but Martha is unique..
Brilliant.
Looking forward to Martha's concert in Cork Opera House on February 1.
I cried.

What’s even more breathtaking about this song is that I believe her mother originally sung this. Martha released this after her death.
Nunk me enamoré de una mujer así.. No me canso de escucharla

This is devastating.
If you dare take my child I will be your end. I will salt your fields. I have already borne the loss of another , the loss of loss an no more loss can be tholled without vengeance. I am scourge of Earth and a gentle lamb for that wee one. Don't mess with me or mine and expect to be unchanged......... I enjoyed being tat character
Yes. And this is a bit confusing. I have just finished an article based on this song, and found this a bit strange. But I give kate mcgarrigle the artistic freedom here. "Proserpina" and "Hera" suits the melody. Demeter and Hera were sisters, so it's close. I also find the name "Proserpina" catchy. think the song would be very different if one used "Persephone."
After seeing the comments none of you seem to have no idea what the core of this song is about...enlighten me
She looks so much like her brother.
#BRINGTHEMHOMENOW
con esta canción me lleve a la cama a la que hoy es mi mujer, la madre de mi hija
Reminds me of the late, great Leonard Cohen.
OscarWilde66 which is funny because her brother actually covered hallelujah
Not surprising since they grew up in the same city
@@mattjazzfan2288 Rufus actually was overwhelmed the first time he was invited into Leonard's home. he did not "cover" the song he paid homage to it

As I just commented to a friend...it could just depend on how you take the reference. Officially, both Demeter and Hera live on Olympus, and Hera could be a second "mother" in the "Queen of the Gods" sense. I'm more confused by the choice of mixing and matching the Roman Proserpina and the Greek Hera, really...ha
It's Demeter (Ceres) who is calling Persephone (Proserpina). The Greek myths get confusing-lots of incest, wife-swapping, etc. The reason P. becomes the queen of the Underworld is that she eats something while in the Underworld (just a few pomegranate seeds!), so then becomes part of it (for 1/3 of the year)-Pluto's wife. And, yes, Hera is the wife of Zeus, and the mother of Heracles (Hercules in Rome). You'd think that the writer would have gotten those important details right. Beautiful song, though.
Her mother Kate McGarrigle wrote it just before she died of cancer.
!
Fame god for my moms wacky yet amazing taste in music
Greek mythology is fucking awesome!
Sad as anything comes.
Married Pluto in the Underworld?
😞😞
özlem brought me here.
