Martha Wainwright performs Nick Cave's classic, the Ship Song, in front of a live studio audience on Adam Hills in Gordon Street Tonight. Absolutely sublime, heart-wrenching, and unforgettable.
I think you can see how good it was by his reaction, live and only learned that day. I can't listen too it more than once at a time, it wrenches my heart so much.
Martha sang this on Tuesday night (the day after this show was recorded) as an encore in Brisbane at the Tivoli. I cannot even begin to describe how beautiful it was. She is unbelievable.
Thanks for posting and yay Adam Hills show for asking her to sing it (as she explained to her Melb show audience on Fri night) - as resulted in her including it as la magnifique(!) encore amid the fabulous acoustics of the Melbourne Recital Centre. Great night, stunning encore.
My god - I am a huge Nick Cave fan and feel her voice is just about perfect - real passion, well done Martha, I am not usually kind to those who cover Nick Cave.
@RyanOuellette89 Having had a look at both Ryan I can't agree. I think this version is felt, nuanced, spontaneous and masterfully interpreted. I like Camille's version, but I found it tired in sections that she felt confused by. Not being aggressive with this feedback btw. thanks for the comment to engage with ...
@Onyx1378 watch leonard cohen's dvd, i'm your man, she sing's leonard's "the traitor" it's probably one of the greatest vocal performances i've ever seen...there's plenty of other huge songs on there as well
I just listened to more of Martha. I slightly modify my comments, but still cannot undestand her lyrics. Her voice comes from very good vocal chords in a large head space. I do like her attack but... pulease articualte more clearly.
Her diction and affectations are dreadful. Give me Eva Cassidy any time Sorry folks who have commented before me, but I make my comment upon being an absolute fan of wonderful women singers, and she aint one, and I have been so since 1962 when I discovered Joan Baez. Nah... I'm not a fuddy duddy.
I love you Martha wainwright 😭😭😭
it was perfect
That was fantastic.
❤❤❤

Omg! So beautiful!
Thanks for sharing 🙏💚✌️
this has been stuck in my head for about 12 hours now and its not annoying me
I second that recommendation - her rendition of "the traitor" sends shivers down my spine. This version of the Nick Cave song is very good too.
Christ, I'm in tears. This is amazing.
Already watched this more than 10 times and her high notes still never fail to give me goosebumps. Absolutely beautiful! She should record this.
I suspect I’ve watched it 100’s of times, and I’m a massive Nick Cave fan. ❤

Great singer, great song, from a family of great musicians. Brilliant.
Just brilliant....You can feel the emotion flowing through you.
Man I only started listening to her like 20 minutes ago because a mate recommended here. She is awesome
I really really love this woman, she is so classy and incredibly talented as well.

Yep
I love her version of this song.
How good is this still !!

Is there anything she can't do? Brilliant!
Martha should do a studio version of this....
Her songs give me strength to fight for goodness.

@samec666 I'm glad to be able to share something truly special :)
Ach, wer wird sich an Dein Lächeln erinnern, wenn nicht ich, wenn nicht ich...
@mtpridham It's a shame I missed her as I live in Brisbane. Well definitely be watching her future shows!
stunning
@janwa09 I completely agree. I became her biggest fan after this performance.

her low E string is sharp goddammit!!!"!
a few bloody strings are off, such a shame
E minor chord sounded great to me
oops I mean Thursday night!
@asiswhereis31 ....so where is your song?
Still can't top the Concrete Blonde/Cave version.
dwarfsid Martha owns this song now !
opinions about opinions are like assholes, everyone who has one, has one.

I prefer Nick's original but she does a nice pretty version.
nothing wrong with that
She makes it into a country song. I like COncrete Blonde's rendition best.
beautiful singer but I wish she tuned her guitar
@luckydog429
She should have smashed the guitar on his head.
love her, but Amanda Palmer and Camille both do it better
Her diction and affectations are dreadful. Give me Eva Cassidy any time Sorry folks who have commented before me, but I make my comment upon being an absolute fan of wonderful women singers, and she aint one, and I have been so since 1962 when I discovered Joan Baez. Nah... I'm not a fuddy duddy.
