  • I finish up my on-the-hard projects and go splash into the muddy waters of the Chesapeake Bay. Getting back around to the sheltered anchorage of Jackson Creek proves just as challenging in reverse, but at least I don't hit any channel markers this time!

    I admire your skill, and courage!, in not having an inboard engine. It’s more than I would contemplate. The iron sail has got me out of many a tricky situation. PS Nothing remotely tastes like Guinness than Guinness in Ireland 🇮🇪

    Boat looks really great Kevin. Bravo! That said, Ireland has just announced a mandatory 14 day quarantine on arrival to ports or airports....... Not sure how long it will last. Ireland is my jumping off point to go Westbound to Canada ---- so that trip is looking compromized too. Hopefully this will not last too long.

      Down in this part of the world everyone shut down......got off lightly compared to the northern H.

      @@pearlyshells2430 Oh no Pearl --- we have been in total shutdown until this week. No sailing allowed at all for the last two months. This week the French allowed local sailing only --- no long trips. The 14 day Q will be part of the 'easing' process.

      Hi Patrick, you could go to the UK, to Falmouth. They are now open, you can come and go as you please. Probably Ireland will follow soon. I just read that Italy is planning a full re-open by June 3. Sounds like the EU is determined not to disrupt the summer tourist season which is big revenue for them.

      @@elmatador6589 He has no through hull for a prop shaft and no prop clearance on the stern before the rudder. The boat was built without an engine. I suppose he could put a through hull in and make a clearance, but that would be a pretty big job and he's been sailing Ruth Avery like this for 10 years now.

      Yes, things are in flux, but so far opening up has not caused any spikes in cases, so I think it will be OK.

      Yes I have been watching what they are doing and believe as you do that they are not going to want to loose their entire summer tourist revenue but the problem will be... how long they may quarantine you on your boat...when you arrive .

You inspired me to try extending the life of my dinghy oars. Found some left over leather from a wheel project and had enough to cover my oars. They look salty and work smoothly.     Nice job! You make it look straight forward, but both the boat work and the maneuvering single-handed is three times the work vs double-handed. That was awfully brave towing Ruth Avery by hand! Seems like the line could have easily been pulled out of your hand!

    It's good to see Ruth Avery back in the water, Kevin. It's almost like she's being held hostage when she's on the hard. Now she's free! I'm looking forward to watching your further preparations prior to you shoving off and heading across the pond. In the meantime, the weather has finally moderated here in Downeast Maine and I can resume work on my new sailboat hull. I've also started a new channel called "Shoestring Shipyard" and I've been putting all my boat construction and related stuff videos there. They were getting lost on my Downeast Thunder Creations channel (it's such an eclectic mix of subjects). Hope you're able to stay healthy and continue to avoid contracting the Coronavirus.

    Ruth's a looker.
    Have you ever noticed how few sailing channels contain actual sailing footage? Perhaps sailing is destined to be your niche? Being a double-ender, with a round bilge, Ruth sails beautifully. That aft camera stand is well-positioned. People might like it if you narrated the basics and the nuances of sailing.

    KEVIN.....Ive been watching your films for a while with the greatest respect mate i cant understand how you put up with those to lines under the boom that keep catching on your solar panel the boom gallows or around your head ..how about a couple of wooden fare leads or ever a couple of loose tries.. every time that boom comes over i think them line are going to get him some time.....

    Oh man. A couple of beckets or soft shackles hanging off of the boom would would do you wonders for line management in these situations. With your marlinespike seamanship, I bet that you could whip up a few of these easily. They can be quite handy to have aboard. Abok# 1903

    Beautiful! But I gotta say, lack of any engine is such a huge factor in owning this boat. You would constantly have to be considering the implications and strategies of dealing with the fact, not to mention frustrations and difficulties experienced on less than rare occasions with simply coming into or leaving dock. “ Your mission, should you accept it....” kinda thing, every time you go sailing. Yeah I know, love is blind, and she is gorgeous, so... ; ) Good luck on your Atlantic adventure. Entering unfamiliar and foreign ports will be quite the challenge, which I’m sure you’ve given plenty of study time to.

    T bolt clamps do a far better job where they will fit. I use a Band it tool with one time use stainless steel bands for a lot of jobs. They provide an even and very powerful clamping force capable of handling very high pressures if necessary. Must be cut to remove. They are super for hose with the raised hard plastic reinforcing spiral, as they can apply enough force to crush it. Industrial supply houses carry an array of sizes. Worm drive clamps just suck!

      That is a rugged coastline for sure. There are many little harbours down in that neck of the woods. Schull,Crookhaven, Baltimore and Cape Clear to name but a few. It is a wonderful part of the world. Crosshaven is very close to where I live. Have a look at Kinsale too. It is very picturesque. Anyway keep up the good work, love the channel.     I think I have see you use a sculling oar before, have you considered making a motorized sculling oar? I'm planing to make a electric one inspired from the "Grimes Electric Oar" but with the shaft internal to the oar and a modern electric motor inline with the handle.

      The oar is only useful in winds less than about 5 knots. There was too much wind that day.

      @@tomwaite4594 On a temporary detachable motor mount. I was actually thinking as I watched this if there would be a way to make a temporary detachable motor mount for the motor he already has, then the dingy could stay on deck and only 1 boat to control. as the motor mount would be detachable it could be stowed most of the time and only brought out when needed.

      @Tom Waite @operator0 I recently saw some trolling motors. I am sure Ruth could extend their shaft to service his freeboard. The right motor might also serve as a hydro generator at times (big enough prop and/or gear). Since they pivot he would also have a lot more manoeuvrability. However, it would only be an electric ore. He might even be able to paint it with a wood patina. :)

      ​@@G11713 I saw Uma addressing the electric trolling motor thing and they said that the energy to power ratio doesn't justify it on a sail boat. They aren't really made to push that much mass around. Sure, I suppose you could use it in a pinch, but he has his dinghy for that.

    Thanks for showing that aborted approach, Kevin. Seeing that, even for very experienced sailors, everything doesn't always work first try is a very useful reminder for the less experienced among us. It was for me, at least. Better to abort and try again than getting yourself into a situation you might not be able to get yourself out of...
