Hubs & I lived in a 28-foot travel trailer for 3 years off grid in central Virginia. We had sold our home (in another state) & rented a year looking for the right home to fix up (hubs has 3 years construction remodeling & many years of flooring installation experience). Hubs developed a serious health scare & major depression & we moved closer to family (hence VA) & then the pandemic hit & we went through our money (we were frugal) & we bought raw land because we didn't have much $$ left. We had no A/C just small fans that worked off 2 small portable batteries. No electricity, no solar. Went through propane a lot in winter as we heated our water up for cooking & showers & for using to heat in winter. We bought frozen ice blocks to put in a container to keep in the trailer (fridge) camper to keep some foods on hand - lasted 2-3 days (wished we had taken bubble foil & outlined the fridge to help the ice last longer) & emptied excess water to filter in our berkey water filter. We bought & hauled water every 2-3 weeks. Hand pump 2 gallon sprayer to take showers. Went to laundry mat. It was challenging but peaceful (on our 1.34 acre property). The man who sold the property had pulled a permit for a driveway so we had a physical address on our title/deed when we purchased the property & we got a PO Box for mail. DMV still had a conniption fit because we had no electric, water, bills etc. for a 2nd verification. We had auto insurance that showed physical & PO Box so they begrudgingly accepted it & its an acceptable proof of a 2nd verification. 🤨🙄 We moved to another state now (hubs job) & are back on the grid but I miss living in the woods & being off grid. We were very poor but if people can get water & a little solar set up, its much easier living off grid. You already have the water & portable heat for showers. Saw bear, deer, wild turkeys, etc. Hope all goes well for you & your family. 😊

I am glad you are doing this now while you are young. Good job! We live on $1720 a mo. Social Security in Calif. Health issues plagued us early on but we cycle. In our early 60's, we bought a fixer upper cabin on 8 acres. Did the work ourselves. Live well on $1720 Because about 50% of our food is free. *Keys to success* ✔ Our Quality Specialized E-Bikes were bought for $2500 each. Keeps us fit & saves $ on gas along with our E-Car ✔Solar power for the bikes, car & home about 55-60% of the year. ✔Endless free water to grow food + a year round creek.✔Live off-grid yet just 13 min to a very small town. ✔Nearby church provides us with our eternal family and free food every Sunday since I help with the free WEEKLY meal provided to the hungry in our town. I supply the entire meal about 2x a month so volunteers eat free. I'll get into our free food in a separate post. ✔We can and freeze food. This is essential to health and keeping food costs low.✔ Our healthcare is free due to low income

I think it takes time to figure out what is the best structure to live in is. Everyone has their own preferences regarding what they want to live in.
I considered living in a trailer at one point of my life, but I eventually realized there are more options, for me to consider. I saw 3 different kind of homes that interest me, so far, and none of them is a house. Building a house will use up a lot of space. The amount of time it takes, for building a house should be longer in comparison to other homes that interest me.
The amount of space, and time it takes to build a home are two issues that are on my mind. What I have been spending some of my time on is making a plan to buy my own property, and I am dividing the amount of space I want to use, for what I want to build, and have on my property. I am also considering the amount of time I want to use, for me to build what I want built.
I saw a man on a youtube video, and I spoke with him as well who has a house that looks amazing, but he has no food, and I am dropping a hint!
Building a home to live in is not the only issue to consider. Because you could end up building, and having an amazing house, but you could also end up starving if you are only thinking about building a house!

I think we’ll probably end up in a camper when we finally get land. I think the first thing will probably do is build out a shed to Home. Like a small 10 x 14’ one make it a small bunk room/playroom. I’m probably just put a small fireplace in there and insulated real well just so there’s an additional area to be during the winter.

Just came across your channel about a month ago. You folks are doing great ! My wife and I are both real estate agents. Your decision to live as financially responsible as possible, learn new skills, make new streams of income, and discover what you really want and need are wise indeed. You will be able to build a home that will now seem huge compared to rv living yet smaller than average home sizes. You can always add on later as time and money allows. 🎉🎉 May you continue to be blessed and stay the course. I hope to start a CZcams channel to encourage others to do the same or at least become more self sufficient, aware of decisions and money spending, not to mention resilience during tough times. I am working towards us becoming off grid at our property within the next year also. We have garden, water well, woods etc main piece is enough solar to disconnect from grid permanently. We have lost power for multiple days this year due to storms. We live a hour north of Houston next to lake Conroe 2-1/2 acres heavily wooded. Best wishes to your family we will keep watching your channel !

After 3 years of full timing in my new Rv I’m ready for more room. It’s an electricity hog and the black water has to be dumped at least weekly. It’s also really loud when it rains. There’s a lot of maintenance and a motorhome needs air in the tires, oil changes, and cleaning. A house is permanent. I want a garden and I’ll live in my Rv while I start my homestead. Thank you for your helpful videos. ❤

Also making sure some clothes are at the bottom of the door help keep cool air in. Tonight first time I saw 72° on a thermometer 🌡️.

Hi! Just curious if you have started to build or when you are planning on starting your home build on your new property. I watch another channel "Life Uncontained" and they bought raw land and built their home from nothing using 2 shipping containers, solar, septic and giant water containers on the land. It took about 4 years start to finish. Cant wait to see what you accomplish. It must be so rewarding to look at any wall or corner of your home and know you made it into existence, not just plunked money down. Good luck!

When do you think to build a house? Here in the Netherlands it’s possible to let a complete house build by a company and then they set it Up in two days om your land. It’s affordabel hoe is that in Australië?

Some people as the get older sell their homes and decide to travel with a camper/motorhome. We want to do that pending some health issues I have. Purchasing a preowned travel home is what we would do. Quality is poor in new ones.
