1993 NLCS, Game 6: Braves @ Phillies

- Atlanta Braves 3 at Philadelphia Phillies 6, F -- The 1993 Phillies were known as a blue-collar, hard-working team, led by John Kruk, Darren Daulton, Lenny "Nails" Dykstra, righty ace Curt Schilling and closer Mitch "Wild Thing" Williams. They had finished in last place the year before -- a full 26 games out of first -- but team chemistry fuelled a 97-65 turnaround, and they won the NL East by three games. By contrast, the Atlanta Braves were just launching themselves as "the team of the 90s" (whether that was still true by the end of the 90s is not at issue here), their 104-58 record just enough to edge out the Giants by one game in the NL West in a classic division race. Their rotation was a four-of-a-kind, aces high affair, boasting two 20-game winners in Cy Young winner Gregg Maddux and Tom Glavine, followed closely by Steve Avery and John Smoltz. A postseason-tested Atlanta squad was heavily favored going into the NLCS, but the scrappy Phils had forced the Braves into a position of desperation in Game 6. Game 2 winner Maddux took the hill, but a Mickey Morandini line drive hit him in the leg in the first inning, and he was not himself for the rest of the game. The Phils sprinkled a few two-run innings throughout, and Mitch "Wild Thing" Williams came in to close it out with a perfect 9th, sending the Phillies to the World Series for the first time in ten years. A side note: Curt Schilling won the NL Championship Series MVP with a 1.69 ERA and 19 strikeouts over two starts, becoming the only pitcher in Major League history to win a postseason series MVP without either a decision or a save.

I was there with my Dad! We won the opportunity to purchase tickets because we mailed in self-addressed stamped envelopes & got a letter back in the mail. Best father & son memory ever!!!
Wow, what a memory.
This Phillies team was unreal that year, everyone had a career year. They jelled and captured the city with them.
i was in college at the time. i love that team, damn they were fun to watch. never gave up
Didn't Philadelphia choke in the world series
@@jacobanus5927 don’t matter they gave it their all
2022 Philadelphia Phillies captured the hearts of the city too.
Being a life long Twins fan, 93 was a dumpster fire for my boys. But for whatever reason I always liked the Phillies since the late 70s. Like someone else said, this was my favorite Phillies team as well. These cats brought it every night. Awesome team
Everybody on this team had a career year and it just seemed to work.
That was a fun year to be a Phillies fan. I remember so much energy in the Vet.
Shame Dutch never got the ring he deserved from this magical season. Carter's homer still haunts me 25 years later. RIP Captain, the 93 Phils would've never gotten as far as they did without you!
He won a ring with the 97 Marlins, though.
Me too, I can't watch the homer to this day, I was 10 at the time and bawled my eyes out for hours. That team deserved a championship like Dawkins deserved a championship....as a player.
@@matthewmorgan4765 Yeah but his contributions to that team aren't really remembered the way the 93 team is for Dutch.
@@davidmayberry3190 I often stay up at nights wondering what a Game 7 would've been like...

That 93 Phillies team was a hell of a collection of characters.

Man, seeing the Vet makes me all kinds of nostalgic.
It was a dump.
Jose Carranza it had no class or charm but it totally represented what Philly is

Lol at Fregosi lighting up a cigarette in the dugout. The good old days, I miss these times..
Yes back when cigarette smokers were a protected class
Leyland was the last manager to spark a burnie in the dugout.
The 1993 Philadelphia Phillies AKA The Philadelphia Mullets. :D Seriously, some of them were still rocking mullets like 7 years after the style had died out. lmmfao
Gangster rap was taking over, so more white boys were cutting their hair short. They looked like truck drivers.
Yeah they were so masculine that they wore makeup like chicks...sorry Bruce
When baseball was fun to watch,I would trade all 2020 baseball's players for those of the 80, and 90`
29 years later, the Phillies upset the Braves in the NLDS.
Heart goes out to Dutch this week! One of my favorite Phillies. Hope the best for him.
I was there in the 500 level in right field. I actually snuck 3 six packs of Stroh's beer in....
And I was drunk when I arrived !! This Phils team was soooo much fun !!

THANKS FOR POSTING !
The Phillies host a charity 5K each year in South Philly.
I ran it this year and I didn't do as well as I wanted to - my asthma was kicking my butt big-time.
But at one point, I saw Milt Thompson along the route giving out high-fives, and it gave me a huge boost.
I couldn't let him see me wheezing along, especially since I was in a Dutch Daulton shirt.
The things that motivate you, eh?
Was there, it was nuts. Never forget it.
Thanks for this upload! Mitch would make Phille fans happy as a pig in sh-t...like this game, other games of the 1993 season. Enrage you like blowing Game 4 of the WS (losing 15-14), Or put you in a state of complete numb and disbelief after Joe Carter won the series in Game 6. He's forgiven. 20+ years later and just looking as a baseball fan, that Carter HR is one of the most incredible dramatic moments in baseball history.

Although the Phillies had the top offense in the NL this season, this was still shocking to see the Phillies defeat the Braves. Atlanta won the NL the past two seasons, then for the 1993 season, acquired Greg Maddux and Fred McGriff (midseason trade). Furthermore, Steve Avery was arguably their 2nd best pitcher this season behind Maddux with a staff that had Smoltz and Glavine.
I was at this game it was awesome!
My favorite Phillies team of all time.
93 Phils. Team didnt back down to anybody. Always nice to beat the Braves and dispose of them. The juiced Dykstra was something. He had some kind of year. Schill was awesome. Magical year ending with a painful experience. You dont always get the happy ending. Best of NL at least.
CBS was the best at broadcasting baseball.
Great night in Philly, I was at Cottman and Rising Sun for the celebration. LOL, I recall laughing also at 1:55:15 , the music director getting his wand ripped out of his hand..haha!
that HAS to be the funniest philly fan moment EVER! ahahahha lol
RIP Jim Fregosi, who passed away yesterday. In retrospect, I think that he should've won the NL Manager of the Year Award in 1993 over Dusty Baker. Not that Baker didn't a bad job himself w/ the Giants (taking them from 72 wins in 1992 to 103 in '93), but it's hard to overlook the fact that Baker had the reigning NL MVP in Barry Bonds at his disposal. In 1993, I seriously don't think that a whole lot of people felt that the Phillies (who had finished 26 games out of 1st in '92) were going to matter much. Other than maybe, Lenny Dystrka, the '93 Phillies, arguably didn't have a whole lot of bonafide "superstars". And of course, they would go on to pull of one of the biggest upsets in sports history (not just baseball) by beating the two time defending NL Champions (and 104 game winners in '93) in the Braves.,
Yes....but they were lucky enough to play Bobby Cox's Braves! So cold on offense. Bad coaching. That Braves team was better than what they showed.
@@Jay45414 Fregosi beat him in the playoffs too with a weaker team. Fregosi should have won that Manager of the year.

Had to agree with you. This team actually overachieved by beating the favored Braves in the NLCS. If only they didn't blew game 4 of the WS that series against the Blue Jays.........

@@mattsharkey8437 I feel exactly the same way. 2008 was great but I'll never love another team like I did the 93 squad. The worst part is that we HAD THAT WORLD SERIES! Game 4 and 6 were ours. Fergosi should never have put in Williams in the 9ths.
@@karamay4189 I know, but I actually felt worse that the season was over compared to losing the series.

Me and my mom were at this game. I was 8.
1:55:08 at the 7th inning stretch, lol, best part of the game if you're a Braves fan!
Mitch was the man! Everyone in the ballpark knew what pitch was coming and he could still get outs.
Yeah he was the man alright
And then off to Toronto where the wild thing Mitch Williams pissed away the world series 😂
Sean McDonough and Tim McCarver were the announcers working that game.
Any Chance you can upload the 1993 ALCS Games? Awesome Channel
What a run the Phillies made in 1993, it still makes me sick how Mitch Williams and David West blew the WS. That Joe Carter swing still gives me nightmares!
Haha never realized how much McCarver looks like Mister Rogers in the intro!
As much flak that he gets for his performance in the World Series, people forget that if it wasn't for Mitch Williams' efforts (he won 2 games & saved 2 including the clincher), then the Phillies probably wouldn't have had a better shot at going their in the 1st place.
Sean McDonough my favorite commentator, he's everywhere!
Please upload 2008 world series game 5!

No thanks to Thigpen and West! Thank you for posting!
Mitch Williams sprained his ankle on that celebration.
Probably the most fun team ever in Phils history....win or lose the 93 series, they really captivated the town.
Yeah, which is nuts because the 08 world champion squad was as lovable as any team you can imagine. They just weren't as captivating as the 93 kids. The crazy personalities just meshed together so well
With all respect to the Phillies, I think the 1993 Braves were one of the best, most balanced and entertaining teams I’ve ever seen, and I think the outcome of this series was unfortunate.
They were definitely the better team. Definitely not the more entertaining team.
Lenny pulling a Kelly Leak at 6:00 lol. Getting in the way of Milt Thompson to make the catch.
Centerfielders ball.
Why does Sean McDonough look older here than now lol
They Braves had Tommy Greene from 89-90. Just imagine if they hung onto him.
They still would have lost to the Phillies. Greene would have been in their pull pen or their #5.
Greene wasn't making that rotation 😂
This his the greatest phillies games maybe or not
So what if they did not win it all. The NL pennant is nothing to be upset about. I would be happy if my team won the pennant regardless if they won it all.
The Championship is all that matters
I kinda feel that way too.
I was always happy to be able to watch my team all the way to the end
Not everyone agrees. That's ok.
i feel like in the 80s/90s alot more stadiums used artificial turf. once they realized how many injuries it could cause, they have cut back its use if im not mistaken.
That stuff was terrible. Crazy fast and weird ball spins. I took infield practice there one time, and it was a learning experience. haha
MrStradia yup the Cardinals perfected it. They built their teams with fast runners and any ball in the gasp was a triple. Fielding was terrible for many fielders.
My joints hurt just looking at that awful turf.
25 fuckin years ago already. more time has gone by since then than the number of years i lived at that time. seems like yesterday. can you guess my age?
I love this team more than the 08 phillies that won it all
Best phillies team ever
They actually didn't change that rule until 1996 - if you look at 1995 the discrepancy was even worse - the 79-win Mariners had the home field against the 100-win Indians that year in the ALCS. Baseball was the last sport to award home-field advantage based on regular-season records, at least in the league playoff rounds. Now if they could only apply that same logic to the World Series.......
That’s true nice job!
28:15 8/9/90 i was at that game!

26:36 im just wondering who "gary maddux" is
Gary Maddox was the Phillies outfielder when they won the world series in 1980
@@johnnolan33177 yeah, but at 26:36 Jim Gray says "Garry Maddox" when he was clearly giving an injury update on Greg Maddux.
@@davidmayberry3190 Yeah Gray is older, slip of the tongue I was saying. Like we know Brett Boone, but growing up an older guy might say Bob Boone because he seen him so much longer in big games. Slip of the tongue they do it all the time. I always hear them.
The S.F.Giants should've gone to the World Series that year.
But they didn't because they choked away a 10.5 game lead after the All Star break
In the end, it didn't matter. Jays rule!!1!
This was the premier anti-Maddux game. Little command, falling behind hitters, hell, even a throwing error from the 18X GOLD-GLOVER! If this was your first ever baseball game, you'd think Greg Maddux was one of the worst pitchers in the league
Philadelphia Phillies did what Pittsburgh Pirates didn't, to eliminate Atlanta Braves.
Sean Mcdonough voice captures big Moments
I always thought it was total BS that from 1969-1993, the Atlanta Braves were in the National League Western Division (along w/ the California teams and what not), even though they're further east than the Phillies.
So was Cincinnati. Meanwhile the Cubs and Cardinals were in the East despite being further west than the Braves and Reds
They should have aloud Harry the K to do the play by play. He was the best
He did, but it was straight. Plus his balls tended to break down into the zone rather than explode up or on a same plane. Hitters can get on top of those no matter how hard they're coming. .
2:26:21 Sean McDonough mentions the Braves being the 3rd team to win at least 104 games and not make it to the World Series. The next teams to do it were the 1998 Braves (106 wins) and the 2001 Mariners (116 wins).
Add to that list the 2019 Dodgers: 106 wins, most in franchise history, and were eliminated in the Division Series by the eventual champion Nationals.
And in 2021, this dubious feat was twice repeated by the Dodgers (106 wins) and the Giants (107), marks which matched or set franchise records for wins. Thanks to the new MLB playoff format, the Dodgers beat the Giants in the Division Series.
@@matthewmorgan4765And you can add another Dodger team to that list. Why Dave Roberts still has a job I have no idea. The man is the king of underachieving.
3rd world series appearance in 13 years, Ill take that for the rest of my life!
@54:00 Woop there it is!!!! Woop there it is!!!! Woop there it is!!!! Woop there it is!!!!
I remember how popular that song was. Holy shit the 90's were silly.
Do you ever realize that the only way you could stop the Braves in the 90’s was to assemble super teams for either a year or 2? The blue jays won in 92 and 93 but then disappeared for the rest of the decade. The 91 twins... 93 phillies... 97 marlins... 98 padres... You wonder how more success atlanta would have been if their front office pulled off more deals for veterans for the postseason. Their offense would always falter in october. No rickey henderson? No barry bonds? No gary sheffield? At least they will always have 1995!
What do they have to show for it? 1995 WS!
The irony is that in the 1995 WS, they beat a team that was clearly better than them. Baseball is funny.
HFA was not decided by W-L record. I was alternating from year to year. The year before the Braves had it vs the Pirates. That's all.
Besides the HFA had nothing to do with the Braves loosing.
Wonder how many of the Phillies team were on steroids?
Kruk, Eisenreich, Morandini, Stocker, Bateste, Greene, Schilling, Mulholland, Duncan, Milt, Jackson, West, Mitch, Anderson, etc etc. Not all you fool. Only Nails, Dutch, Chamberlain & Inky possibility? What about Gant, McGriff & Justice?

As great as Maddux was, in the post season he was only 11-14 3.27 era.
Strange how out of the "Big Three," only Smoltz really dominated in the post-season. 2.67 ERA, 1.144 WHIP, 199 K in 209 post-season innings! That would be a Cy Young caliber regular season.
Warm weather pitcher? or just good against very good teams? Not great.
3.27 still pretty good
Bring back double decked playoff ball with astroturf.
I'll never forgive Jim Fregosi for putting in Mitch Williams. Everyone knew he was cooked. Roger Mason looked tough.
I think the 2013 Boston Red Sox were the most lucky team of all time....
Little random but okay
The lost to the Phillies in '93 has to have been the most demoralizing for the Braves during that otherwise incredible run during the '90s. They were across the board, easily the superior ballclub. The Braves won 104 games during the season (surviving that intense race w/ the Giants), if I remember correctly, should've manhandled the "scrappy, feisty" Phillies. And after losing back to back World Series, '93 was suppose to be the year that they finally won it all.
Nbc was good in 70's Curt gowdy Tony kubak
I still believe the reason the Braves got ousted by the Phillies in this series, is bc they were so mentally out of it, bc of that season-long race with the Giants...and even tho I was upset the Phillies won this series, I pulled for them in the WS against the Jays, bc I still had no respect for Toronto after the 92 WS. I distinctly remember CBS showing a shot of Roberto Alomar doing the tomahawk chop, after a Jays win in the 92 WS, and I also remember Jays 3rd baseman Kelly Gruber doing the same thing, after a Jays win, and both pretty much pissed me off as a fan.
The Braves were the better team but were so cold at times offensively. Three games in this series (4-6)...what happened? Bobby Cox's teams always had that problem. Look at the 2011 Cardinals , they were in the same spot, and won it.
Also, of the games decided by one run, the Phillies won all three. Outscoring the Phillies in the series didn’t mean much, in the end, for Atlanta.
The Braves perhaps also grew complacent. They were the two time defending National League champions, they won 104 games in the regular season, and they were going against a team that only won 70 games the year before. Many naturally assumed that the Braves were going to steamroll over the Phillies (kind of like what happened with the Mets when they faced the Dodgers in the '88 NLCS) since '93 was expected to finally be THEIR YEAR to win the World Series.
Cbs come back pleas

Why didn’t the Braves have home field in this series ? They had the better record ...
During the 2 division years (1969-93), the LCS home-field advantage alternated between the divisions. World Series was the same way
@@SuperfanDKThe one exception being the 1986 NLCS. It was the East's turn for home field advantage, but with the middle three games to be played over the weekend, the Astros would have had a scheduling conflict with the Oilers on Sunday. To avoid this, the series opened in Houston and the middle three were played in New York.
