Those were touching tears at the end, I wonder if Derek has read "Myth of Normal". I really enjoyed the chat about Minimalism @ 2:26:56 as I'm feeling the suffering of being stuffed (reminds me of a book I got from New Zealand called "Stuffocation"). Willington is a beautiful area. This is probably my favorite podcast ever.
I'm really thankful for the existence of both of you.
Reading the 4-hour workweek when I was 15 contributed a lot to set my vision on working full digital and ended up being a huge motor of motivation for me to create this youtube channel with +700 videos about juggling and circus.
It changed my life forever because I knew it was possible when deciding to drop out business college to go full time Malabarize-se.
Discovered Derek's books and blog because of Tim's interview many years ago and was just hooked. I read probably all the blog posts and books and often recommend his books to friends.
Derek really inspires me to be a better human being and hell yeah or no is a framework for decision making that is always on my mind.
I love the fact that there are no unnecessary words in his writings
If I answered the question of who were my mentors (even them not knowing about it) it would be you two.
When I created my TedX talk I remember watching Derek's one 2 or 3 times to think about structure and to look for inspiration. When Tim shared a link I sent on twitter in 5-bullet friday newsletter I remember how happy I was about contributing with it even if just a little bit.
Thank you so much for everything you do. For being a source of inspiration in the world. You inspire me a lot to be better everyday
    😊
If you ever come to Brazil and want to learn 5 ball juggling (or just have a good chat) drop me a message
    Keep it up

I think it would be great if you did more "Tim with friends" casual style episodes like this, just like the random shows with Kevin, where you sit down and have an in person chat with a friend or popular repeat guests who aren't trying to sell anything. Watching you in these episodes you look like you enjoy it more too, so would give you an excuse to travel to see them, have a drink etc etc...

Derek was my roommate in Astoria, Queens for about 3 years: although he didn't know me from Adam, he rented a room in his railroad apartment to me because we had a mutual connection/friend (a young woman who worked in his office at the time who also happened to be the daughter of one of my mom's best friends). I always admired his ability to focus on what matters in his life while pursuing his professional goals and dreams with very little compromise while always being friendly and genuine in his interactions. His success since those days, including building and selling CD Baby, doesn't surprise me: that's what happens when people put in the necessary work and focus. Always glad to follow his progress and be stimulated by his ideas. (Jealous as hell though that he gets to live in Wellington, New Zealand....)

    • @brendonla
      @brendonla Před rokem +1

Also good point from Derek: don't be so reliant on cloud (clown?) services or you could loose all your precious data/photos. And Wordpress is notorious for having security vulnerabilities (though in fairness they address them quickly and there are security plugins like Word Fence to protect your WP instance/site; Derek's point about WP being more than most folks need is true though....)

So setting up your own server and services and exposing it to the internet , without a firewall (since dedicated servers dont usually have that) is more secure than using a cloud service which is investing heavily in security? Not to mention sh**ting you in the foot with rsync (you should really know how it works)? In my option that is really bad advice. Its only a matter of time until your system gets hacked because you just used the default configuration of a service or forgot to install all security patches. If you are interested in learning the details, go for it. For all regular people, my recommendation is: use secure passwords and multi factor authentication and make regular local backups of your cloud data.

Towards the end when Derek was in tears on thinking about the critical importance of parenting, you can see how much he cares about that role and how much he recognizes its value. In short Derek is doing God's work there, that's one way to look at it. That's the way to see London. After ending up wandering the streets of Mayfair, ended up in an underground club filled with Armenians who didn't really speak English well (and I certainly didn't speak theirs)...until Living on A Prayer came on. Suddenly, everyone spoke Bon Jovi and we had one of the best nights ever!

This is the best surprise ever! I just emailed Derek last week since I'd been listening to all the old episodes of his podcast appearances. Can't believe there's finally a new one with him, and on video to boot! Love this new format, Tim

I love that. It is very different to care deeply about people, but not about what they think of you. That's very differente.
Empathy is different from validation. I actually had a very different feeling from him, like a very hearted person
