I need to go watch your Fourth Wing review now because that was hands down my worst book of the year. I had seen people RAVE about it and I like dragons so I finally decided to give it a shot and now I have to go re-read some Dragonriders of Pern to cleanse my brain. It was SO. BAD.
I can't wrap my head around it, people had to have been paid to review it, right?
This is so funny to me (in an ironic way), because I enjoyed Fourth Wing but I CANNOT STAND Dragonriders of Pern. I mean, to be fair, I hate the author so I'm sure that shaded my views of the books. I feel like this is a prime example of us being lovers of dragon books, but for two entirely different sets of reasons. 😆

As for my least favorite of the year... a toss up between Fireborne and What Lies Beyond the Veil. I wish I had those hours back.

I like the one minute rant... it left me intrigued to find out more of your thoughts on a particular book. And I've not read Fourth Wing and don't intend to... but a lot of 20 year olds nowadays seem to have the maturity of a 14 year old sadly.

I also thought that it would be more about the 'Haunted House' but... a pupper named Pupkin? How is that scary.. you know i really enjoyed Hell Bent but you’re entirely right and i think i even thought it too at some points- what happened? i still feel like i don’t entirely understand the world and i definitely didn’t understand anything that was going on with Darlington. But i think maybe i attributed the lack or plot furtherance to my own lack of understanding what was happening 😂 and unfortunately for me, not understanding what’s happening in a fantasy book is pretty common lmao

My worst book of the year was definitely "She's gone" by David Bell, it was just...so bad. The writing was terrible and the "twist" at the end was first predictable and then just stupid??? Really didn't like that one 💀

Worst book I read this year was Iron Flame by an EMBARRASSINGLY large margin. Fourth Wing at least was bad in a fun way, where you could laugh at the dumb writing in the same way you laugh with friends at a crappy movie. But Iron Flame... oh my god.
People say "this needs an editor" but nothing on God's flat earth has needed an editor like this one. I dropped it around page 200 and I think the same argument had occurred ~12 times by then? Plus 8-10 repetitions of Violet feeling bad about keeping secrets from Rhiannon. And of course Violet herself going from moderately annoying to literally The Worst Person You Know on every level.
The Alchemist? Nauseatingly saccharine, but I got through it. Kafka's The Castle? Genuinely difficult to read and felt like I was in a time warp, but I got through it. Iron Flame, I had to drop because it was actively ruining my mental health with how something rage-inducingly stupid would happen every three pages, despite NOTHING happening for hundreds of pages at the same time.

Oh my... that was super fun! I couldn't do that! And my least favorites were what... Verity or a french book call Inhumaines by Philippe Claudel! I'm currently reading Hell Bent... and I still don't know what it is about. But I don't hate it as much as you do!

Well, I've only read two of them, Fourth Wing and How to Sell a Haunted House. I liked the dragons better than the humans in Fourth Wing and as someone who has three siblings I did enjoy the relationship between the brother and sister in How to Sell a Haunted House. As siblings you may not always get along, but at the end of the day you have to realize you have a shared experience that may not have affected all of you the same way. I've been in a reading slump and just can't climb my way out of it. Here's to 2024 being a better year! 🍾

I love this concept lmfao my worst book this year was a nonfiction book called Thriving as an Empath. It’s one of those 365 books that is supposed to give you little tidbits to help overly empathetic people, but actually it was just the worst kind of white woman’s wet dream of cultural appropriation, disordered eating, body/slut shaming, and blatant misinformation about closed practices. I finished it solely so I could review it online because it was so HARMFUL. I picked it up thinking it would help me but it just made me mad at people who think it’s okay to speak on things they know nothing about 🥴 I also really didn’t like Georgie All Along by Kate Clayborn because it was very yeehaw insta love and as a demisexual city girl, no thank you lol

I have a feeling that the reason why Hendrix didn't mention the puppets is that it would turn A LOT of people off and they wouldn't read the book. I know I wouldn't have picked it up if I knew that's what it was about. Thankfully I got it from the library and didn't give that bait and switch author any of my money!
I've only read Hell Bent from your list and agree with your review. I'm so glad I started reading Leigh Bardugo this year so I didn't have the anticipation and hype building me up for it or I would have been sorely disappointed. And while I haven't read Project Hail Mary, I have read two other Andy Weir books and your review more or less describes those books as well. It's been a few years, but I think I gave them 2, maybe 3 stars because I was on the fence and rounded up.
For my own list this year... I have 30 1-star books and several DNFs. I typically read Indie Urban Fantasy so that can go any which way, so I'll exclude them and only mention more well known authors. This was also the year I finally gave in and read some popular authors that I have avoided for whatever reasons since their debut and it didn't always go well.
In no order:
City of Bones by Cassandra Clare (I was live texting my rage to my group chat. At least they were entertained)
Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare (I DNFd)
Piranesi by Susanna Clarke
Psyche and Eros by Luna McNamara

Harrow the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir
The Cruel Prince by Holly Black (Again, I hated the MC)
Jaws by Peter Penchley
