  • In this video, the classification of bacteria based on the shape of the organisms were discussed. Bacteria are classified as cocci, bacilli, vibrio, spirilla and Spirochaete based on the shape. A cocci is a bacteria that has a spherical, ovoid, or generally round shape. Cocci are further classified as Monococcus, Diplococcus, Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, Tetrad and Sarcina based on their arrangement. A bacilli is a rod or cylindrical shape bacteria, and it is further classified as Diplobacillus, Streptobacillus, Coccobacillus and Pallisades based on their arrangement.
    Spirilla (or spirillum for a single cell) is curved bacteria which can range from a gently curved shape to a corkscrew-like spiral. Many spirilla are rigid and capable of movement. A special group of spirilla known as spirochetes are long, slender, and flexible. It is further classified as vibrio, spirilla and spirochaetes.
