🇬🇧 The lovely town of Ledesma is only 35 kilometres from the city of Salamanca, on the banks of the Tormes River and close to the Arribes del Duero Nature Reserve. In this town there are many elements of interest that you cannot miss. In fact, the town holds the well-deserved category of Historical Site (The interior complex of the walled enclosure and the perimeter of buildings that surround it were declared a Historic-Artistic Site in 1975) and has been officially chosen as one of the most beautiful towns in Spain.
It is an architectural and landscape complex of great value in which great monuments such as the grandiose Church of Santa María la Mayor or the Town Hall are mixed with the old palaces of the 15th-19th centuries of the noblemen and the nascent bourgeoisie of Ledesma, charitable institutions such as the Hospital de San José or the Alhóndiga.
In short, an environment based on a multitude of historical buildings surrounded by the climate and landscape of the Charro pasture in which you can breathe the atmosphere of a prosperous past based on the combination between the countryside and the city, the peasant and the nobleman, that made Ledesma the head of a very prosperous manor on which towns and villages from Salamanca to Portugal, from the Diocese of Zamora to that of Ciudad Rodrigo depended.

Saluti!!

Hola! As you might guess, it's Sunday night and I'm sitting here with a cup of coffee watching the video. Decaf, I don't want to be awake until 4 am. 😃Anyway, I really enjoyed it. It really is amazing. Hard to believe that almost no one knows about it. I guess if you are a tourist and want to visit a beautiful medieval town, and don't want the crowds, this would be a great one to visit. Does it get more crowded in the summer season?
Very impressive bridges over the river. Are they from Roman times? I noticed at the entrance to the bridge, the modern stone edge was built staggered, like you see in medieval castles. Very nice. The beautiful little chapel at 4:57 (del Carmen) reminded me of some of the chapels I saw when I took the train through New Mexico. Of course, they weren't quite as old, but old for America, and similar in style. At 11:11, what a great view of the two bridges, and I noticed a nice bench there to sit and enjoy the view. 😀
At 19:40, wow, that building there looks amazing, and what a view. The park there is spectacular. I noticed lots of old people with walkers and wheelchairs. Is that the Hospital de San Jose? I guess if you have to be old and in a hospital, that's about the best place to be.
The highlight of the tour for me was the Iglesia Santa Maria de La Mayor. (i think i got the name right) It's really beautiful on the outside by the Plaza Mayor, but wow, the inside was spectacular. Amazing that in Spain, a small church like that is such an architectural, cultural and artistic wonder. So beautiful inside, and what an amazing sculpture of Jesus carrying the cross. I think it was a Roman soldier too, and I forget who the other figure was, but what an amazing place. Lucky that it was open so we could get a little tour inside!
And then at 32:15, we got the church bells! Always adds a nice touch to the video. And then again at 45:12, and again at 46:55. They wouldn't stop! 😄
Castle Fortress was impressive. I wonder if that's where the troops would be kept to defend the town. I would love to be able to go back in time and just sit and watch and see how the town functioned, and how people went about their daily lives. I can't do that, so I guess I just have to use my imagination. 😀I think I could hear some sheep toward the end of the video, where there was that amazing view, around 48:03 or so. Very nice up there with the bells going off.
Enjoyed the video. Can't believe it's March already. Spring is almost here! 😀Take care.

Hola! How have these last two weeks been for you? Hope everything went well. I'm glad to know that you haven't lost your habits ☕😄 I think I should start copying you while I edit my videos (although it would probably take me several coffees)
As you say, it is difficult to imagine that it is so unknown, unfortunately this happens to many Spanish towns, although they are very beautiful, not many people know them, perhaps because they are far from the popular tourist routes (as I think is this case) or because they have Some better-known town nearby that "eclipses" it or who knows. The curious thing about this town is that it is included in a popular list of the most beautiful towns in Spain (some of them I have already filmed on other tours 😁) and even so I am sure that the majority of Spaniards do not even know that Ledesma exists... Maybe that's better 😈 because it really is the perfect town to enjoy a beautiful, quiet place without crowds.
I'm not sure, but it is possible that in summer the town has more tourists and also more people who have had to leave the town for work and they return on vacation to rest. This is a very common problem in the interior of Spain, many towns remain empty because their inhabitants have to leave them to go to work in the cities. Perhaps this problem also occurs in Massachusetts or another US state. Here there are even small towns that are for sale (imagine, for the price of a house in a big city you can have a whole town to yourself 😄)
Returning to Ledesma, I agree with you, the view of the two bridges over the river is very beautiful. The oldest bridge, where I cross, is from the 15th century, although it has undergone changes since then, but it seems that there could have been another before in that same place that was from the Roman era, also a few kilometers from the town there are Roman bridges that are still preserved because Ledesma must have been relevant at that time. Regarding the chapel, it is from the 16th century, I really like where it is located, next to the river and away from the town. I couldn't film the interior from one of the small windows at the entrance since just at that moment the couple behind me did too... This time I was unlucky!😄
At first I didn't plan to film that part and go directly up the stairs, but when I saw it, I liked the view from there so much that I decided to include it.
Very observant regarding the hospital and the old people! 😉👍 Although I think that that old hospital no longer has that function, I have verified that there are a couple of nursing homes nearby and surely at that time they went out for a walk. If you hadn't said it, I wouldn't have found a connection between them.
It also happens to me like you, I observe some churches that are austere and small from the outside but when I enter they seem much larger and are much more ostentatious. It is very shocking... Although what really surprised me on this occasion was seeing so many people inside the church 😄 (There were more people inside than in the entire town)
I am not completely sure but I think that this sculpture of Jesus with the cross is the one that is carried in procession through the streets during Holy Week, which is usually shown in the churches few weeks before.
You're right, that sound of the bells in the background gives it a special atmosphere, on this occasion they rang more than normal. It must have been a special day, although I don't know why.
Regarding the fortress, from the information I have read, it must have been much larger than what is preserved now, and it also had a palace next to it. When you walk through the old town of towns like this it is easier to have a small idea of what life could be like at that time although I agree with you, it would be interesting to be able to travel back in time for a few hours and observe what their daily life would be like, I bet it wasn't as pleasant as ours! 😄
Thank you very much for your visit. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Hope March is nicer than February. Nos vemos. Take care!!

I forgot to answer about the sheep. You are right, there were some sheep in that small field next to the walls. When I passed by for the first time they were next to the wall so my intention was to end the video with them but when I returned they had already gone to the upper part of the field and could barely see each other. It's obvious that they don't like fame 😆
