Why are so many people homeless in Ireland? | The Stream

  • Last year, Glen Hansard - a renowned Irish singer-songwriter and Oscar winner - went onto his country's biggest television show and announced that he was deliberately breaking the law.
"We are involved in an act of civil disobedience," he told an applauding audience. That act was the occupation of a vacant government-owned building in the centre of the capital, Dublin. As Christmas approached, and the weather chilled, Hansard and a group of housing activists had decided they could no longer bear the sight of people sleeping on the streets.
They broke into the Apollo House office block and set about turning it into a homeless shelter. What they did caught the imagination in Ireland. People turned up at the building wanting to offer food and clothes, a mattress seller known locally as Mattress Mick provided bedding, and Hansard and other well-known musicians belted out protest songs from the roof.
Almost a year later, though, Hansard says things have deteriorated.
This month, it was reported that the number of homeless had passed 8,000 for the first time and almost 3,000 of that number were children. Housing charity Focus Ireland calls the figures staggering and says they must represent "a line in the sand" as campaigners pile pressure on the country's new 38-year-old prime minister - or Taoiseach - Leo Varadkar.
So how, a year after the #homesweethome protests sparked such an outpouring of sympathy and emotion, are there now more people homeless? Why does the one of the richest countries in the world have such a crisis? And what needs to be done to tackle it? Hansard, Erica Fleming and Noel Rock TD join The Stream to discuss.

I'm from Dublin, Ireland, and this has been a problem for well over two hundred years. Look at adverts for vacant accommodation in any Irish News Paper, and you'll see, that each advert comes with no social welfare need apply. Or the rent is set so high that it would be almost possible to rent it, to begin with. It's a rich man's trick. Our politicians are given away our national resources while creating a *TAX* *HAVEN* for the *RICH*

  • @HughSheehy
    @HughSheehy Před 6 lety +37

There is a homelessness crisis in Ireland because government policy after the financial crash in 2008 was to re-inflate house prices.
The inevitable result of that was to restrict construction and new supply, with the knock-on effect on rents, homelessness, etc., that we have seen.
The homeless are NOT a priority for the Irish govt. Not for the govt and not for the minister of housing.
Pushing housing costs (house prices) is a political priority in Ireland. It pleases existing house owners, the banks, landowners and landlords, all of which are more important political constituencies than the homeless or young families struggling to buy or rent a home.

As an Irish person on the one hand I'm extremely embarrassed but on the other know its not the ordinary citizen's fault this is because of the inaction of bad government to better regulate the private rental market and surprise, surprise wouldn't you know a good number of those in power are landlords around the major cities of the country, significantly Dublin. Corruption, greed and power are the only words that best describe this nightmare.

Most of the people who are homeless are from working class backgrounds. Any job they had was most likely was a low paid or minimum wage job, and they never were able to save money. They just got paid enough to live from week to week without putting money in a bank account because the wages are poor and the rent for accommodation is so high. Then if they lose their job for some reason and fall behind on their rent they are in big trouble and face homelessness. Once your homeless it's very hard to find a job again. The huge rise in immigration into Ireland over the last twenty years has driven rents sky high and wages way down. The minimum wage is not in line with the cost of living in this country. People just cannot save money. At the end of the day it all just boils down to greed and it's always the working class who suffer the most because of that greed.

Wrong there is people from all backgrounds in homeless accommodation working class middle class and most definitely upper class. Addiction can happen to anyone more likely middle class that glass of wine every night can turn into a serious problem and before you know it they've lost everything. Educate yourself in reality not some statistics from a sociology book from the 90s One can only assume given you're ignorance and stereotyping. Indeed working class is a percentage but it's not the majority. Class isn't distinctive of character but rather circumstances. When people stereotype based on class it leads to the belief that people are almost deserving of their situations based on class. High cost of living, rising rents, low paid wages, unemployment, not enough housing, alcohol and drug addictions, mental health family problems these are more likely the reason why people are homeless and these are people from all walks of life age groups and social classes . How do I know you might ask well perhaps because I've seen it first hand.

Also services like Air BNB taking up spare rooms because in tourist towns people can make more money to pay for those large mortagages taken out on increasing property prices. We moved out of Auckland and live now in New Plymouth lovely house at a under half of AKL no mortgage so we don't have to earn so much, have a way better standard of living now. Also able to buy another home and rent out for future income in retirement if we get their.

The official country rankings place Ireland as one of the wealthiest countries in the world, a lot wealthier than the UK which is not in a good place financially. The UK even had its credit rating reduced by Moodys and also by Fitch. Ireland recovered quickly from the financial crisis by exporting her way out of recession and now has an enormous trade surplus. The UK on the other hand has a trade deficit for decades which means it imports way more than it exports. Just Google "countries ranked by wealth" to see that Ireland is in the top ten wealthiest countries while the UK is only in 26th place. The UK also has the highest domestic debt per household in the world. I am French and work in Dublin so I'm pretty neutral but I notice some British commenters using fake facts about Ireland so I guess people should research it for themselves to find the truth. I guess the British commenters may be jealous that a small country which broke away is doing a lot better than them. I'm not certain but perhaps this is the reason. Kind of funny to read their jealous comments though.

@flip inheck As an economist in London, you're above statement is completely without merit. Irl has one the highest GDPs in Europe. It's main industries are pharmaceuticals and agriculture, construction, technology. They exported themselves out of recession. They have some systemic problems that need to be addressed. They need to invest heavily in infrastructure. They need to build public housing. The current problems are exacerbated by air b&b, lack of public housing being built, spiralling rents, real estate from multinationals and a lack regulation in the rental market. Similar problems in London with spiralling rents pushed up by foreign investment.
They also have one of the lowest debts in Europe, some 13% below the EU average with Austria, France, UK, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Portugal etc..all higher.

If an individual finds himself homeless in Ireland, his situation is viewed by Irish society as moral failure on his part regardless of circumstances. All political parties will state that homeless individuals in Ireland are the following:
    - Alcoholics
    - Junkies
    - Mental defectives
    - Criminals
Furthermore, homeless shelter workers (mostly middle-class Irish) have nothing but contempt for those who are forced to enter emergency accommodation. No social housing is built in Ireland so unless homeless individuals have job skills to raise funds to escape their plight, they'll be left to rot in homeless shelters for decades. Ireland is full of charities set up not for the benefit of homeless individuals but to created employment for thousands of middle-class Irish on large salaries. These so-called charity workers sit around all day discussing their holidays, hair, nails, and whomever they're sleeping with while drug taking, dealing and interpersonal violence happens around them. The Irish social institutions are happy with the arrangement as An Garda Siochana collect intelligence on all homeless shelter individuals.

This time greed is not good. They are doing lots of building in the business sector because that land is being sold at an inflated amount. Rents will go up as long as they find renters and with no housing, they will. SO reduce all rents by 8% then freeze them, Subdivise housing starts and raise all fees on nonessential commercial building starts. Examine your homeless they are not all the same, drugs, misfortune, handicapped and mental, You can't help them if you don't know them. And lastly, without regard, put a freeze on immigration. If you don't the tourist will slowly stop coming.

No actually it's not. For years, people abused the system to get free places to stay in. I know people that where put out on the street, just because it was easier to be homeless for a while, than working your ass off to buy a house. I know drug addicts and ex drug addicts, who have abused the system and got free houses. So maybe if the Irish people didn't abuse it wouldn't be so strict now for the Irish people. The greedy Irish put the needy Irish in this situation. (When I say free house I mean, they get a free places to stay in, with rent allowance. Along with weekly payments.)

One should mention that 80% of the Homeless are not lrish, this is a very important point, the lrish are ok,we are safe and doing very well. One silver lining to Covid,it has massively reduced homelessness, many of the homeless were East European and a lot of them have flown home to be safe and happy with their families,l used to give money to Pawel on my way to work most mornings, when l saw him in March he said he was going back home as the commuters had disappeared from the City Centre and he could'nt make any money from begging, his income dried up as many people have stopped carrying coins or just have'nt been in the City Centre since then. I used to be asked for money maybe 20 times a day as l walked through Dublin, now it is very rare so Homelessness is a problem that seems to have disappeared since Covid. Thank God.

We're in recovery. But the party of this Noel guy has just stated that the banks that had to be bailed out, that led to an Ireland under extreme austerity, don't have to pay taxes for the coming 20 years. We have companies like Apple that owe Ireland a sum of tax money, that we could solve 20 homeless crises with, but no... we're in recovery. This is a person speaking from a political party that has led Ireland into austerity and continues to serve the wealthy. This homeless crisis, and great that they're talking about the hidden homeless, has been going on for years, it's not like it sprouted up.

If the government ensures there is an even playing field in the first place then less people would be put in the position of relying on government housing. When you have rich and greedy people buying up realestate and then charging outrageous amounts for rent of course it is going to cause huge problems of homelessness. Maybe you should stop blaming the victims of the corrupted Irish government and instead focus on bringing these authorities into account for allowing this situation to get so bad.

Is this an attempt to be a psychologist online? I should ask you and an all increasing mob mentality. Lastly I do have empathy but a part of empathy is knowing the root cause of the problem and correcting it. Lastly don't try to make assumptions on things you don't know about. Espicially online to strangers. Psychopaths are people who will use charming, gaslighting, double speak and manipulation get what they want. They also seek power to do these things; which means you should be looking at your own government, and official instead of strangers online who have different opinion, and just wanted to know answers.
