  • In this video I explain how I went about building a raised outdoor hutch for my coturnix quail and things that I would do differently if I were to start over again or build another one in the future.

You have so much space and nice environment that I wonder why you didn't just build a huge aviary for them, or even multiple of them so that you could rotate them from one to another so that the waist would naturally compost in the aviary which is not currently in use.

@T12J7 I have 2 aviaries. I have a video of one of them and am currently in the process of building another.

    Appreciate the quail content!
I'm in the finishing stages of building our quail aviary, and wanted to build a more robust growout cage- this is almost exactly what i had in mind, with a few features I hadn't considered yet.
This is also the first I've heard that the coating on the HW cloth can retain the poop. I've read the galvanized can rust quickly from the acidic droppings.
Do you think a pressure washer would have trouble with the vinyl coated hardware cloth?

I use a pressure washer to clean out this hutch. Just be careful not to put the nozzle too close to the vinyl hardware cloth if you go that route. Overall, the material is quite durable, and I haven't experienced any issues with the pressure washer causing any damage.

Since you are in a cold looking area and have a non enclosed housing the coating should keep their feet warmer in winter verses wire that would suck heat away from their feet.

Excellent point, I don't plan on keeping the hutch active in the winter, just spring through fall. The quail will be transferred into the aviary enclosure for the winter season.

Your door/gate braces are flipped in the wrong direction. They should run from the bottom hinge up to the opposite top corner. Wood is stronger in compression, and will resist door sag much better in that orientation.

I appreciate it, I'll definitely consider that for the next project, and it's a simple enough fix to change them around thankfully.
