Bleach Fashion: Character Style Analysis

  • So many people who watched my Favorite JoJo Outfits videos, suggested taking a deeper look at the uniforms of the characters of Bleach - as well as their various casual outfits depictions in manga/cover art.
I love how Tite Kubo maintained each character's personal style across all of the different pieces of cover art, and the fashion is still functional in present day, especially with the resurgence of early 2000s/Y2K fashion trends.

As a huge Bleach fan, the way you described Byakuya as “classy and royal” Orihime as a “girly girl” and Renji + Grimmjow as “thugs” and Uryu as somebody who is “responsible and put together” is LITERALLY SPOT ON regarding their personalities within the manga/show.

I think a lot of people, men especially and me personally, see fashion and the culture surrounding it as this impenetrable clique of weirdos doing weird things for weirdness's sake. Now that I think of it, Rukia's aversion to the spotlight in the art really fits with her character.
Before her and Renji made it into the Shinigami academy they were street rats. They got by on being less noticeable and obnoxiously tough respectively.
Then once Byakuya adopted her into the Kuchiki family she was a noble. She was trained to have proper presence and bearing for her station, but as her station is "that girl Byakuya adopted as his sister because she's his late wife's little sister" her proper presence and bearing is "looking pretty off to the side with the rest of the unimportant ladies and third sons while the important people do business." A position Byakuya enforced on her out of a desire to keep her away from the kind of danger important and powerful nobles have to contend with.
We see a bit more personalization and assertiveness to her fashion after the timeskip when Byakuya quits impeding her advancement up the officer ranks to Lieutenant and lets her have more control over her life.

Renji- black men/boy street fashion in the 2000s
Chad-he dresses like a adult man but often has no sleeves or tight long tops to show off his arms

    I completely agree with you:
Byakuya's style is akin to "old money," raised in a very traditional sense, looks really formal and put-together in a more traditional fashion sense.
Ishida also has an "old money" feel to him, but more like "new money that's transitioning." He's still got a lot of formal attire, very much something I'd expect from a rich family, but he's also very young and wants to fit in while not bringing shame to his family's position. The son of an aristocrat would want to be stylish to meet the standards of his non-wealthy friends, who vastly outnumber him, but he also wants to please his family, so he's gotta find a balance.
Byakuya doesn't need to do that because he's old, rich, and dead. Small circles, he only ever picked up Rukia because his dead wife bade him to find her sister(Rukia).
Honestly I had to fact-check that last bit, I'm surprised over 10 years later that this bit of information was completely accurate. I think there's something wrong with me 😂

This was a spectacular analysis, you pretty much nailed each character personality dead on. The art pages in the manga were always fantastic. My favourites were always the ones where the characters are all wearing the same base outfit, but each with their own style in how it is worn like the white outfit at 9:36. There was another similar one that was a nice contrast of that where they were all in black pants and black shirts, but each had little differences for their personal style. I think I had that image as my desktop wallpaper for about 6 years straight 😆

  • @raipier
    @raipier Před rokem +1

I'm glad you pulled from the manga as well, because the color illustrated opening pages have some of the best character outfit artwork. Plus each chapter Kubo creates new, unique, and colorful outfits... every time... that is a hard feat.
You also get some good slice of life moments from them as well, because in the story, the characters don't "hang out that much", but in the artwork Kubo conveys what their lives might be like if they weren't always fighting.
Great video, I will definitely watch more of your work!

  • @moonshiro
    @moonshiro Před rokem +1

I'll be completely honest - I was completely prepared to be upset, I'm a hardcore Bleacher and this is my favorite series in the world and I've seen videos like this about bleach in the past and they were full of mistakes that could have been corrected with two minutes of Google, so I came prepared to be disappointed and upset.
I am very, very happy to say that not only was I not disappointed, I literally applauded you at the end of the video in front of the screen.
You did an excellent job in your analysis, even more so and especially relative to someone who hasn't seen the anime or read the manga.
You managed to understand the personal style of the characters with great accuracy and you also managed to describe the personality of most of them without knowing it.
I really enjoyed this video and you talked about a lot of pictures and drawings that I wanted you to talk about (basically the whole part of the art drawings from the manga) because there Kubo sensei really takes artistic freedom and creates beautiful things.
You really did a good job with this video and I'm glad I watched it, I wonder what you'll think after you watch the anime or see some of Kubo Sensei's more contemporary Bleach and Burn the Witch artworks, because both places have more new designs and ones that are also very beautiful and interesting.
An interesting thing to learn about Kubo sensei is, in the world of manga there is a thing called a A cel, (short for celluloid) or Cel shading, which is actually stickers with designs that are supposed to save time and effort when creating manga, some of the designs that exist are striped and floral designs as you often see in the fashion world (with a design that repeats itself exactly or stripes at precise intervals that in free drawing will be more difficult), and it is very clear when you use these because the pattern does not change with the folds in the fabric.
Kubo Sensei almost never uses Cel shading in the manga-art and in the manga itself for fashion, he draws all the patterns by hand, which I feel is one of the things that gives the edge to his art
Even in the pictures you put, the only one I have suspicions about is Orihime's skirt in the picture when the gang is leaning on the pillars, but I'm not absolutely sure- You can see that the pattern doesn't really change with the folds in the fabric and right next to it you can see in Yasutora's pants the less equal lines that were drawn by hand, as well as in the pattern in the shirt on Uryuu's waist and in Ichigo's belt, he could have used a cel but he didn't and he draws the patterns by hand And it increases the quality and beauty in my opinion a lot!
I definitely enjoyed this video and your approach!
If you are looking for recommendations, I recommend you check out the manga Kuroshitsuji by the creator Yana Toboso, but especially the manga because there are more designs and manga-art , a bit like what you did here with the division, and in general look at Yana's fashion design art, she is also responsible for the design of the phone game Twisted Wonderland and there are also some amazing designs there, I think you will enjoy seeing it, even if you don't make a video (because there it is more fashion for fashion's sake, although you can look at the clothes, especially the permanent kind of clothes of the characters in these places (daily clothes and school uniforms) as a mirror and indications of their personality, to one degree or another) because Yana's style is unique and beautiful .
    Thanks again for the video!
And if you could give a link or tell me the site where you found the works and pictures I would be very happy and appreciate it, I'm interested if I know the site and how deep in terms of knowledge it is

Looking back at the intro's and outro's, as well as these art pages. I can see either similar clothes or something in the same vain as his style.

A suggestion if you want another anime with some focus on fashion is Yu Yu Hakusho, from the 90s. The styles shown in the prints and in the anime for this show is something that I personally took inspiration from when I first started getting into fashion styles.

Absolutely loved this and as a first time watcher, your pronunciations were damn good (not sure if you regularly watch anime or not. If you don’t, that’s even more impressive tbh).
A cool follow-up to this could be looking at the changes in characters styles after the time skip within the series (Fullbring, TYBW, and New Breathes from Hell arcs to be specific). Most of the characters you checked out here do have stylistic changes, particularly the shinigami (soul reapers) in their shihakusho (the soul reaper uniforms).
Also fun fact for anyone who’s not super into Bleach, Tite Kubo (the mangaka) actually started out as a fashion designer before moving into creating manga. And one of the big things that makes Bleach stand out, particularly when compared to other early 2000s anime, is that the characters actually wear different outfits and have some real drip to them 😊
