If you dont understands Ussops motivation then you arent paying attention closely enough. The man is not powerful, he is the embodiment of a regular average man. He gets scared, he has doubts, he has confidence issues he struggles with. Imagine being all those things and then surrounding yourself with some of the most powerful fighters/pirates as your friends. They continue to win more and more and as the enemies get tougher you dont grow any stronger. Ussop feels pathetic, he feels like a phony compared to them. So when he sees the Merry being cast aside in what seems like a barely thought out quick decision it makes him feel like hes next and anything that cant carry its weight gets discarded. And thats WITHOUT the idea that Merry came from the one girl Ussop cares for the most. Add that on top and he just completely loses his senses and lets paranoia and low self esteem take over. He was obviously in the wrong, but Luffy is horrible at expressing thoughts clearly and subtly. It was a miscommunication that turned into a total breakdown. Happens every single day of the week in our world.
Hell yea, Oda already said once that he suppose to be the more human and real aspect in the crew.

Idk if I would call this argument about miscommunication, I think both of them clearly communicate what they think in that argument... and yeah you're on point with Usopp motivation, and freaking GODa would tied this conflict beatifully to the next conflict, this is one of the best story telling
I agree but then you gotta understand where they’re coming from too. It’s because we can relate to Usopp that we understand this is him overthinking in his own head, because we feel like we’re part of the crew we get mad at Usopp for leaving. Like Zoro said, was leaving the crew that easy? His own insecurities almost cost them the whole crew.

I love Usopp as much as I love Luffy. He might be the weakest or hated by people. Deep inside he's a very good character who's personally relatable to me when I'm always being the least interesting person in my friends circle.

Did someone really think that Sanji wouldn't save a man? lol He save Gin in a very first arc that they introduced him and Gin can't pull himself to kill him because Sanji is simply too kind. Did someone really think that Nami only care about money? the very first arc, she trying to save a whole village by saving 100 million for other people. Those people who think Sanji or Nami are selfish is pretty much been watching Two Piece.
nami knows without money you can die and with it you can pay to save someone's life...shes been through it before...it shaped her youth to get money..i get why she loves money...thats nothing to be ashamed of..its ptsd..in real life not having money can lead to diseases you can't cover with health care lack of food and of course well being living/living in bad environments in general where dangerous stuff occurs and can lead to death as well...her character is based on poor people in ghettos..she just happens to be a pirate...

Ussop is afraid to let go of the Merry because that's he feels he has to offer to the crew. Since his fighting abilities are not up there with the rest of the crew he feels inadequate.
He feels that if they get rid of Merry they are getting rid of his contribution to the crew. At the end of the day these guys are 17 years old and not really matured.

Ussop are mad at that moment, he got beat up and was feeling really insecure, the Merry thing was even more brutal to him than for anyone else in the crew, and he also doesnt had any time to process all this shit like the other, is like alot of big ass shit happening with him all at once, its not a "mature" or not mature matter, anyone in his shoes would feel the same, beyond the fact of that other thing about Merry as well.
@@Shurororu As well as how Luffy was persistent about the Merry’s strength until Galley-La told him about the keel the captain ensuring the crew is safe. It would have also helped if Usopp had also been more upfront with his insecurities and him not feeling as strong as Luffy and the others beforehand and his insecurities in general, especially after he baselessly accused Cricket of planning to betray the crew without even trying to bring up any evidence.

luffy is a pirate and thus, he expects dishonesty and treachery. he even says so in a future fight later down the line that he doesn't expect his foes to fight fair.
and ussop knew how tough luff is and knows how much punishment he could take so the threat to luffy's life was minimal, if not outright nonexistent.
Not only is Usopp sentimental about Merry but also is identifying with the ship and it's role in the crew. He feels he is just as much of dead weight as Merry is and is also afraid of being abandoned like Merry is (also Yassop left him early). So to prevent him from being abandoned again he's breaking off the straw hats on his own terms. His own insecurities led to this happening.
I really love you guys saying these things. It remains people that especially young boys has insecurities too and feels too, it is a simple thing but here in my country people force boys that they cant feel that way and only cares when we girls feel. But no metter gender we all pass trhough this and see you guys so okay with that shows how way mature you already is than older mans. @@JsJdv Nah Ussop did a lot, as he said he was the one fixing the ship all this time. He defeated one of Arlongs top commanders and in general brings a great dynamic to the crew. Not to mention he is an excellent sniper.
You can call me fanboying one piece, but in my opinion luffy vs usopp, contextually, is the best "friendship" duel more than goku vs vegeta, sasuke vs naruto, deku vs bakugo, steve rogers vs tony stark, batman vs superman, or even guts vs griffith (the first duel.. the upcoming one probably would be the best maybe 5-30 years later due to hiatus idk). It hits the feeling very rough, like when we see our two best friends or family fighting and we couldnt stop them to fight and just see them beating each other. Like luffy says. It s tough.. really tough..

He does not look for respect, he gains it through his words and actions. What sanji did was out of the blue but then again it was the right thing to do that's why luffy instead of berating sanji for kicking him, he said 'sorry' as soon as he got up.

1. In a pirate's fight, it is okay to cheat or lie. They are not paladins. Especially for Usopp. Like when he fought Miss Merry Christmast and Mr 4. He lied alot in the fight
2. He was fighting for Merry, a gift from Kaya, something that he truely love. You would too, if you have to fight something or someone you really care about. Of course he was going to use an attack that would cause the most damage to Luffy. Why wouldn't he? He was amazing in this fight. This is the first time (not the last) I was truly impressed with Usopp. He did numbers on Luffy.
3. Oh man that claps when Luffy punched Usopp, really piss me off. I mean when I read this part in manga, I was in horror. I don't want any of them to get hurt. They were friends now they were trying to kill each other. I was not on Usopp nor Luffy side. I just want them to stop.

it's not that he got mad about the money, his upset cause his friends are just ditching a ship he feels a strong connection to and sees it as a metaphor for himself. the fact that Luffy was getting so upset is that Usopp didn't respect his judgement and decision. a Captain's word is law and if a friend or crewmate rejects that it's like spitting in his face. Usopp left cause up to this point Luffy has always been the laid back friend, not a stone cold captain, and he never had the best judgement up to this point too. i mean... their last adventure did nearly kill them in more than one way. they just got lucky is all.
The fact is: Usopp doesn't trust Luffy with such a heavy decision and so refuses to agree with him and even leave the crew.

Well someone already talked about Luffy vs Ussop conflict. I want to add something else when you said Sanji and Zoro are wise well yes they are. Their captain no matter how strong or good he is , he is still an idiot and childish. Zoro and Sanji are his right hand and left hand respectively. They are older than him and they have keep their crew in check instead of luffy. With this scene only you can see Zoro being right hand man he is fully behind his captain and keeps him in check on the other hand Sanji is there for Luffy's friends or crew , his role is to keep crew safe and sane. We can say their loyalty is unwavering. Zoro is for luffy , prevents him for doing stupid stuff and Sanji is for Luffy's crew because without them Luffy is nothing. They are two faces of same coin.

11:45-11:52, if u notice, Zoro is the only crew member that doesnt ask ussop to stay, Hes also probably the only crew member that wouldve agreed to luffy’s command of not fighting back vs Bellamy(sanji wouldve kicked everyone’s ass for laughing at nami talking about sky island, and Luffy wouldnt let the other members like ussop and chopper, take a beating from Bellamy)
And Luffy specifically asked Zoro to rescue smoker when the water came pouring in crocodile place.
Luffy got rid of the merry because she was esseintially useless... Ussop took that personally because he felt extremely useless having just lost 200mil. Ussops thought process goes like this, if luffy is getting rid of useless nakama(the ship) then he'll eventually get rid of ussop. This duel was a prideful fight like dorry vs broggy ussop needed to prove to himself that he wasn't useless and needed to overcome his fear of his nakama leaving him and being alone. That being said they aren't supposed to hold back ussop wanted to make sure luffy didn't hold back against him.

I dont know why everyone is heated so much in the comments. When I first read them I expected a very bad reaction but then I saw the like/dislike ratio and it is quite good. I then watched the video and saw them trying to think objectively and add their opinion right after that which is quite normal.
Like on 15:08 when they talked about Batman vs Superman. That comparison was spot on. How Usopp knows how to bring technology and equipment to the fight since he knows Luffy and his weaknesses. But then they added their opinion right after about how there is no way Luffy will lose. (considering the fact that Luffy will actually fight and not lose on purpose)

I'm not gonna repeat everything people said about why Usopp left because I agree with most of them. But even though there aren't technically ranks in the crew besides captain, these episodes show why Zoro is the vice captain of the crew.

12:45 Ussop's not fighting luffy for the ship, he wants to convince himself that he is strong enough to survive. He thinks he's weak and he thought the only thing he was good at was repairing the merry and support. Once luffy told him the merry couldn't be repaired, it convinced him that he wasn't even good at that either. If u think about it, this confrontation really makes sense. This really tore ussop apart, from the money being stolen, having the others fight for him to try to reclaim it, and the merry being unrepairable despite how hard he tried.
Also Ussop's not trying to kill luffy, you know what luffy's been through. Ussop knows that he's gotta give luffy everything he's got in order to get far in this duel.

The StrawsHats treats each other as family, they would fight to death for their crew and Luffy just carelessly says to get out of the crew, that’s why Sanji kicked him. And that’s what Usopp perceived, that Luffy wants him out of the crew.

I didn’t like Ussop at all from the beginning of the series and during this fight I was rooting for Luffy to kick Ussop’s ass. As I continued to watch One Piece Ussop grew on me and finally become one of my favs. So yea I understand you guys a lot.

Usopp wasn't going to kill Luffy he's mad but not that mad he just pulled out all the stops because a fight vs luffy is a real uphill battle
Usopp fight Luffy just to proof his strength. All argument is make sense since Usopp always think he is weak and Luffy always trying to be a captain and make decision. Usopp never see Luffy as a captain but only his friend that why he push his anger over reason easily. And you right Usopp is selfish in this argument. And this fight is my favorite fight of all time ,That why my favorite character in Onepiece is Usopp. (Btw the way Usopp say surrender or die is just Usopp gag the same as him saying he have 4000 follower. Unwritten/unspoken rules of "PIRATES". In the majority of the pirate crews/group in OP, Ussop will be dead or suffer major repercussions/consequences.. Quiting/leaving a crew in the pirating world is not something that is spoken lightly and talking to the Captain that way...

It more of a thing that, Ussop thought that ... How easily luffy abandon merry as it is no use to him. He thought in that way they will abandon him too as he is no help to the crew.

Ussop feels like if Luffy is willing to give up on Merry after its usefulness runs out then he'll someday do the same to him. This is my favorite fight in the series because of the emotional weight it carries. The dialogue between them before the fight is one of my favorite parts too.
The Luffy vs. Usopp is 1 of the top 10 moment of OP. You might want to pay close attention to details in this arc, well basically in every arc. There was a lot of foreshadowing from pervious arcs that lead up to his arc.
He's not going to cheat, this is how fights are without a controlled environment, especially in the world of One Piece. How many time have we seen some WSHH Fight Comp style video where two guys face off and some yells: "Nah, no kicking!, Nah, don't slam" like they are the referee for the fight that doesn't even involve them.
How about when a guy is getting beat up and his friends jump the other guy? Or even worse when a man & woman are fighting and nobody does anything, but laugh when the woman is winning then once the guy stops holding back and eviscerates the woman everybody jumps in: "You're going to jail, asshole! You don't put your fucking hands on a girl!" Now compare that with a fight where at the end both guys shake hands and move on like men, I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but it's not the majority. Plus, the slimy pathetic sadists recording the fight on their cameras, massive crowds forming, some dumbass telling people: "I want to see a good fight, I bet you won't hit em!!" Then get your bitch ass in the ring and but your brawn where you mouth is.
The point I'm trying to make is that once you remove all the bias, double standards and rules reality become very clear: It's a fight and anything can happen during that fight, some of your opponents might be fair and honorable, others will not be. Male, Female, Non-Binary, Gay, Straight, Transgender, White, Black, Hispanic, or Asian doesn't matter the outcome will always be the same, two individuals facing off in a physical confrontation. Usopp doesn't have any supernatural powers; he's very useful, but he's not a combatant and that makes him a liability if everybody always has to save him because he can't hold his own in a fight.

usopp wasn't treated fair in the beginning when they witheld info about merry's fate. i'm not surprised he's angry and impulsive from that convo. despite being crew's ship, Merry is usopp's treasure. Luffy hailed for being mature let's this slip out of his mind. he treats usopp as weak (not physically, but emotionally) and that fuels the insecurity that usopp might not be needed in the crew cuz of his physical weakness. what follows is a 2 man duel after usopp feels insulted by his best friend. it did not spiral out of control. usopp knew he couldn't beat or kill luffy. he just wanted what little redemption he could muster for the way he was being treated. i love this fight, but opinions in the community tend to skew in the luffy's direction more than usopp. we dont even need to bring kaya in in this fight to understand usopp. that cheapens his struggles with his own self worth and why he 's such a well written character.
Ussop and Luffy's emotional fight in the lead up to the physical confrontation is honestly one of the best bits of character writing in the whole show. Luffy is trying to tell Ussop gentely about the situation with the Merry but he's already proven to be too blunt and rash like the interaction on drum island where Vivi was shot among other times. Ussop on the other hand is upset and worried about the Merry because it's not just a reminder of Kaya who he has this deep love and care for in, both a plutonic and romantic way based on my reading (though I'm not a psycologist so you know, my opinion on there relationship shouldn't be gosspel but I believe it's common concensus), but also the Merry represents his home and he has learned to craft and care for it all this time as well, it is just as much a part of the crew as Luffy or Ussop or any of the others are in his mind so the fact Luffy can just turn around and say that the Merry is being abandoned so easily hurts Ussop. He's been outclassed in everyway and is struggling to fight his own depression over his percieved lack of self worth of the crew and feels he can also fall behind and left like the Merry but he's unable to express that to the others so they all fight. Neither Luffy nor Ussop are right or wrong in this situation as the conflict is entirely a clash of egos and they don't know how to communicate. Another sad but incredible detail about this conflict is the fact that Ussop and Luffy being the same age, they were like best friends before so when they clash it is so much worse for the two of them and Luffy actually goes the longest time in the manga to date without smiling aftet the fight, a full 50 chapters which equates to a little over a year of publication I believe due to the occasional breaks Oda will take during the year as well as the two weeks Shounen jump takes as a whole.

Well, the way I see it is Sanji figuring out what Luffy was about to say in like fragments of a second, so he needed something quick. Also remember how Sanji beated Luffy and Ussop up on Skypea, I know it was comedy but they are always beating eachother up.

Luffy is mature enough to understand the difference BETWEEN a scolding with the purpose of mantaining unity in the crew or being safe or not taking unnecessary risks or whatever the reason of the scolding might be AND straight up challenging your captain and/or your captain's decisions into a fight. Plus there's a bunch of far more serious problems going on with the crew within those episodes to be worried about a kick which he has gotten several times in the past. Follow Luffy's example and move on, don't stay mad haha

Keeping in mind Usopp’s previous experiences in going about the ship, how the ship was a present from his friend Kaya, and mishandling his insecurities that led him to feeling like a useless and cowardly weakling that would only hold Luffy and the others back, I also think that it would have been best if Luffy had explained about the keel right from the start instead of talking about a catalog, considering how the keel itself helped Luffy accept the reality the ship was done for and was basically the main basis for motivating his decision as captain to get a new ship in the first place, not to mention how he wandered away from his original intention by telling Usopp to pack up, only to regret it by being like “Sorry, it just slipped out.” Definitely quite a bit for both characters to learn from here.
I understand that Ussop took things too far but it’s honestly annoying how SO MANY people root for Luffy during this fight. Not only is Ussop powerless and the underdog but he is also the one hurting emotionally which is what caused the fight in the first place. Going into the fight it’s OBVIOUS Luffy won’t lose so i don’t understand how people root for him. To see Ussop whip out all these cool tricks and actually land damage on him was crazy to see ! When I first saw this episode I was just hyped to see Ussop at his full potential!

Hey guys I wanted to share my thoughts on this as I heard the comments have been hard in this video. I do not care about Usopp's motivations in this fight. It doesn't change the fact Luffy is the captain, this is hard on him and the crew to. Luffy was making a hard decision for the sake of his crew, and it wasn't about the money usopp lost, it wasn't because he was weak. Luffy had to make a tough decision as captain and "captain" usopp would have run the ship to death killing his crew if he had his way.
This incident shows Usopp had no respect for Luffy, he hasn't had respect for him since he joined, how can you tell? He still calls himself captain. He is still playing pirate. He treats Luffy as a friend like the kids at his village not as the man he should respect as captain. Usopp was taking this stuff personally, and he lashed out while one can sympathize doesn't mean we should condone his actions.
Usopp started this and escalated it at every turn. Even if they had the money he still wouldn't have believed the shipwrights and he could have convinced Luffy to keep sailing cause usopp makes Luffy do worse stuff. Oda said it himself Usopp makes Luffy act out of character when they together.
Usopp is willing to take the risk of them all dying at sea if they keep going with the merry. To prove the point usopp is fighting for the merry and even the merry is crying she didn't want this, she didn't want this to happen but usopp's ego is hurt we gotta stroke his ego make him feel better no. Sanji should have kicked usopp too
Ussop Vs luffy this fight shows growth of Ussop's character, before this Ussop is just a coward person for everyone but in this fight we can see he can fight anyone for his stand even when knows that he is going loose but he shows courage here.

Dude, i think you just didn't understand how a duel works in One Piece. No matter relationship you had with someone you fight with, you gonna be so serious about that.
The whole arch with the Going Merry had me soo friggen Emotional.
I feel like at some parts you were over analyzing things that didn't really need to be analyzed.
Usopp has seen Luffy in action and knows how much beating he can take. Usopp probably knew from the start that he was going to lose but wanted to give it his all.
The part where Usopp says that he has 8000 followers and that Luffy should surrender or die, is one of those things that you shouldn't think too much about.
Maybe the spoiler lady should join in the reactions again. Not to spoil, but to fill in the blanks when you start wandering into speculation/misunderstanding territory.
This fight seems to cause a lot of fights in the comments lol. Not everyone is gonna get everything on a first watch, especially if they're also watching with another person. Not to mention since watchers have connections with these characters, emotions can block out details too. If they take their eyes off the subtitles at the wrong time, they can miss major details too. It's not about them understanding or not in the moment. Because in the moment, depending on how closely connected you are with the characters, you may be feeling anger with certain characters and end up not seeing their side of the story. People that watched these episodes week to week had a week to cool off and think about the characters' actions and thoughts. They had a week to think about what all the characters were thinking and feeling, and how those emotions may have warped what the others were saying. People that are binging through don't have that time to cool off and think about it until sometimes much later

To me Usopp is projecting himself on the Merry, after Aokiji he begins to feel more and more useless, and now seeing his captain leaving a hurt nakama behind, it wrecks his mind even though he is wrong and irrational. He was scared on being left behind as the Merry. And to me Sanji knew he felt that way that's why he kicked Luffy and I think he was right, because when Luffy is being stupid or immature someone hits him (even though it's comedy, Nami still punches Luffy), and because they were kids playing pirates (and that's why he will agree with Zoro)

So, every ship has a soul, that is what they were saying about not being able to recriate the same ship. We have seen Merry's soul when she fixed herself in Skypea, however ussop was the only one who saw her, the others just saw the ship fixed. Merry is actually almost like a person, she has feelings too, she is part of the group.
Usop is a sniper so being scared definitely fit his character, plus if he's already brave, there's no more goals🤨 but I agree that Usop kinda being unreasonable, what if the ship sinking while they're in the middle of the sea, Luffy Chopper and Robin are a devil fruit eater

YBRL, when I watched this part the first time I was also on Luffy's side. But rewatching it again, I realized it was all good writing because everything happened according to their beliefs, specially giving their everything on the duel. Friendship will not hinder their resolve because that would give disrespect to your opponent.
Remember the giants in Little Garden? Both Ussop and Luffy are astonished on how glorifying the duel was even though the giants forgot the reason of the duel 👍

All Strawhats consider Merry as part of crew specially Usopp. So when Luffy suddenly told Usopp that he going to bye new ship, Usopp feel that Luffy really abandoning his Crewmate just cuz it can't keep up and cuz Usopp is not strong as other in crew he really able to relate with that. He thought that someday Luffy also going to abandon him cuz he can't keep up.
