I also loved his role as the Pastor on the Waltons. Even now, such a loss & far too young. Not that it matters but that was actually the same way that Lucile Ball died, aortic dissection.
No, it wasn't. So glad though that they wrote his death into the show because it gave his fans closure & a chance to grieve, eventhough you weren't actually 'at' the funeral, through the way they addressed/included it, you felt as though you had been.
RIP James Garner. You will be missed. You were wonderful. We love you and will miss you. You are now an angel watching over us. You have earned your wings
Seein' their reactions to the death of John's character on the show and just knowing that the emotions they all displayed were real and genuine because John had literally just passed away in real life...Jesus.
It must've been really hard for them to keep doing the show, but easy to act like their dad died, since they were all so close to Johno Ritter. I cried so hard when I saw this episode, and even a couple after it made me cry.
I cried so much... I know this happened years ago, but I saw it now, and this episode really touched me. It makes me so grateful for my loved ones. Even though my dad hasnt died he's pretty old and he has high blood pressure. I've gotten scared a few times and hopefully nothing will happen, he seems fine. But I should appreciate every moment cause things can change so suddenly from one day to another.... RIP John Ritter
this truly has meaning, you never know when a person you love will leave your life, there's nothing you can do, whether it be death or just to leave without any warning!
You know whats beutiful if you watch afther this episodes. they reminding him almost every episode. now im watching this and i keep crying an crying. tis so sad i really mis him in the show. ):
i love 8 simple rules. From season 1. It was devastating when John RItter passed away. Funny thing is, when i watched first few eps w/o JR, it actually felt like they lost their real father. My condolences to everyone who ever cared for John Ritter. And the show is still awesome.
This episode broke my heart. And their faces and reactions were real. Which to me made it more sad. You can tell he was close to everyone on that set. I loved him on threes company and this show. It wasn't the same after he passed away. I stopped watching. He was the show. He was the heart of the show. Such an amazing comedian. 🙏
I lost my father at the age of 9 so When i saw this it brought me to tears as well. R.I.P!! I cried when I heard he had passed away I used to love this show!
Unfortunately this is what happening all over the world....when though we don't want them to go, grandparents, parents, brothers, sisters, sons and daughters. (sigh)
John Ritter was a great actor funny as hell and even though he played a dad to these beautiful actresses he was a dad in real life and I know what’s it’s like to lose a dad. I lost my dad in 2007 and it was the hardest most emotional day and night of my life. I dreaded letting him go but, it was for the best cus he was on life support and his wishes was to be taken off if he was ever on it. I love him and truly miss him to this day and every day. He’s in a better place like John Ritter is but, still. 💕😢💔
James Garner, Suzanne Pleshette and David Spade really stepped up to the plate, when the show needed them. It really says a lot about the talent of john ritter. It took 3 actors to fill hi shoes, and it still was not even close.
I am a 49 year old father of three girls at the time of that episode two were teenagers. I still cry when I watch it. I have to call the girls just to say I Love You
Anyone who lost their father will totally appreciate how this show handled everything right after, and for the following episodes. I lost my dad 3 months prior to watching this and sobbed for episodes after.
@moznico aww, I haven't watched this show that much but was interested to see what they did with his character after his unexpected sudden passing. So sorry to hear about your dad. I just went through a similar situation a few days ago. I got a call from my sister saying our dad collapsed at work and had a heart attack and was in a coma. He came out of the coma & was on life support. They removed it at noon and he was breathing on his own until his heart stopped 9hrs later
This happened to me as well as my father, and several other people i know.. Dad is fairly young, leaves for work, dies on the job.. It a terrible stunning blow to a family as it is totally unexpected. You live for a while with the feeling that he will be home at 5 oclock, but then one day it dawns on you that it just istn' going to happen.
On September 11, 2003, Ritter fell ill while rehearsing scenes for an episode of 8 Simple Rules. He was taken across the street to Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center, where he died less than an hour later, at the age of 54, in the same hospital in which he was born. The cause of death was an aortic dissection caused by a previously undiagnosed congenital heart defect.
R.I.P John(jack tripper) Ritter we will never forget you, and all those times you made us laugh, a very talented actor, he was the best of the best we will miss you
i always loved that show and the this episode this episode wanted me to stop watching this show but i didn't i haven't cryed in 5 years i wacthed this episode yesterday n 2 tears came down R.I.P :(
this episode was really really sad. i watched it again last week and i thought it was even sadder this time, cuz it made me think of my cousin and his wife. their daughter passed away 3 months ago.
I was watching a classic episode of Three's company on Antenna TV today, it was the one where Jack gets drunk on a bottle of whiskey, while he's trying to tell his friend Larry not to marry his fiancee....and John's performance in this was absolute gold
@covingtonjoe Very true. Goodness gracious. I still cry when I think of his death. He was born on my Mother's birthday (9-17-48) and he died the very same year my mother did. The world loved John Ritter.
This is a very sad episode. The saddest thing is that he really died. I've heard that Katey Sagal, and the other actors were really crying during the filming of this episode.
I still cry too. The GOODBYE episode was filled with real emotion and tears. I think that is what makes it so good yet so sad. John Ritter was an amazing actor, husband & father. He loss touched many lives. I remember the cast on tv after he passed and their tears were real. I think this Goodbye episode was aired about 6 weeks after his death.
try seaching 8 Simple Rules - season 2, episode 4. I think it is called Goodbye Paul. There is someone with a playlist of all of season two that you can view. Good Luck!
I thought it was the best send off they could've given John Ritter. They did it with style, that's something he would really appreciate. Sorry that he's gone, he is certainly missed.
How a sitcom made me cry in the farewell episode us unexplainable.... I knew the cast was crying for real and it broke my heart..... John ritter was the best sitcom actor EVER!!!!! I'll miss him and his smile....
Henry Winkler (the Fonz) was making a guest appearance on the show and talked to him right before Ritter went to the hospital and died; Winkler said Ritter was sweating bad and complaining about being thirsty. Aortic dissection, which the hospital thought was a heart attack and gave him blood thinners -- the absolute worst thing they could have done. He bled out.
I was in shock when I heard that John Ritter died at the age 54 years old and I'm not over this passing of him but I knew he would have survived but unfortunately he didn't make it at all
I cried and cried and cried. The episode hit to close to home. My dad died at his work place. They said it was a heart attack but my dad was a healthy person. Later they ruled that he suffocated. Dang that was on 1/13/09. I remember hearing him leave for work at 6:15 am but he never came home...
@xlilxmamax1andonly Thanks. I'm struggling to make sense of his death. After 2 years I think and wonder and ask ?'s. I just pray and pray he didn't suffer. My dad died when he went to repair a panel. Behind that panel was a build up of coal ashes. The coal ashes came and sufforcated him. THE HARDEST part was he was last seen at 9:15 am, but he was found at 3:36pm. This episode was/is very hard to watch...even this clip...ugh can't stop crying. He like John Ritter too :') Love you alot dad...
I watch 8 simple rules, but I've never seen the episode where Paul dies. Somehow I missed it and I'm trying to find it. I was watching this vidoe and about 2/3 of the way through, I just burst into tears. RIP J. Ritter.
that was really sad i remember my mom waking me up for school and telling me he died i was so sad :( he was one of the greatest actors and greatest men who ever lived
I could be better. Thanks I was 4 months clean from meth. My dad hugged me and my husband saying he was glad we were clean TWO days earlier. When he died I slipped and relapsed. I didn't prepare myself for "this" when I went to treatment. I am still struggling but our daughter is a reminder I can't just give up. My mom is doing okay it seems on the outside but I know she misses him. She's aged alot since Dyi (we called him that) left...Thanks for your thoughts.
He was on set and wasn't feeling good so they sent to the hospital. there was a tear in his iorta(not sure how to spell it) and he dies 4 hours after later on the operating table
When you live a life of loving others and making them laugh like John did, and by them being so sad and missing you when you leave, you have lived a truly wonderful life. God is taking very good care of John in Heaven... :)
sorry, i ment to say. Im not even going to lie, i almost cried. John Ritter was the main reason why i watched 8 simple rules, he made the show soo funny, jeez i really wish he was alive. He would probably be in another T.V. series or 8 simple rules would continued but i really do miss him.
@moznico I understand, my dad's father (tho we werent rlly close) passed away suddenly, and my dad was pretending to be calm, tho I know he's still freaked from it--tho we talk about it a lot when my bros and I see him on the weekends. :o_O
@SuperSully79 I think heart attack like John Ritter had. I loved this show. IMO it was still good after he passed but it just wouldn't have been the same.
Miss John Ritter....not only a Great actor but, also a Great person in general. RIP will never be forgotten.
I also loved his role as the Pastor on the Waltons. Even now, such a loss & far too young. Not that it matters but that was actually the same way that Lucile Ball died, aortic dissection.
This show just wasn't the same without him :(
No, it wasn't. So glad though that they wrote his death into the show because it gave his fans closure & a chance to grieve, eventhough you weren't actually 'at' the funeral, through the way they addressed/included it, you felt as though you had been.

Its should have Paul death on the show but actor is John both died.
Not to mention the fact that they all really loved each other
That episode makes me cry every time. Even some of the scenes in the following episodes. The show handled it really well, and was really touching.
What a nasty shock, right there on the set to hospital, 8 hours from onset to passing. Makes passing from one realm to another real.
Miss u John Ritter great actor miss u but never forgotten
A great man. so sad. RIP John you made us laugh for years
It must've been really hard for them to keep doing the show, but easy to act like their dad died, since they were all so close to Johno Ritter. I cried so hard when I saw this episode, and even a couple after it made me cry.

That first episode after John died, you could tell that the kids were really upset, they weren't acting, the tears especially on Kaley were real.💖😰

The show was just depressing after this. Everything about it, event he living room was also dark & never lit. Such a sad episode.

Kaley said that right before he went to the hospital, he stop bye her dressing room and told her how much her loved her.
Rest in peace Mr Ritter God bless 🙏
I own both seasons of this show on DVD. John Ritter is irreplaceable. The show lasted 76 episodes. For me, it lasted 31 episodes. R.I.P. Ritter.
I was in shock when I heard that John Ritter died at the age 54 years old and I'm not over this passing of him but I knew he would have survived but unfortunately he didn't make it at all

He died of an aortic dissection. He went for an angiogram and died on the operating table.
Paul Hennessy (Ritter) collapsed while getting milk. While it doesn't say much, it's believed to be a heart attack
When me and my uncle heard that John Ritter died, it was a blow to the both of us...
i hate to admit it but this episode was really a sad one, it really sucks losing someone close to you.
sorry, i ment to say. Im not even going to lie, i almost cried. John Ritter was the main reason why i watched 8 simple rules, he made the show soo funny, jeez i really wish he was alive. He would probably be in another T.V. series or 8 simple rules would continued but i really do miss him.

@candycaneloly I believe it's called Goodbye, or at least its what it says on tvguide
Television itself is not as good without the incomparable Jonathan Southworth Ritter.
If you agree, say AMEN.
RIP. It's so sad... :(
i cant imagine how tough it musta been for them.
20 yesrs on Rest In Everlasting Peace John Ritter 🩵🤍🩵🕯️ never forgotten 🪶🕊️🕯️🤍
