    Jamerson’s sense of building and releasing tension through melody AND syncopation is just otherworldly. Love this performance so much.

    One of the best days of my life was playing this bassline in Uni, and the lecturer telling me “I didn’t think you would ever be able to pull it off like that. You nailed it!” Truly an amazing bassline. James Jameson was the master.

      Awesome. I'm a guitarist, but have a bass and have played in several bar bands and I always loved Jameson's artistry. He really helped make Motown a cornerstone of Americana. Apple pie, baseball, George Washington, and Staxx Records and Motown!

    Any of those bars would make a terrific riff on its own for a complete song, and here you have tens following each other and never repeating. Unbelievable! Congrats on nailing it so well, sir!

  • @jomtien123
    @jomtien123 Před 11 měsíci +3

    I want you bass world to know once and for all that when you hear the word 'bass line' this is the man it came from. It was Jamerson who transformed a 'riff' into a 'line', that is, perhaps due to his jazz roots made the bass interesting over a series of bars in a story like 'line' as different to what was played then. As a matter of fact this is still what is played now and wrongly called bass lines, a figure comprised of one or two bars played again and again IS NOT A BASS LINE. These a are riffs having only 'instant' vertical interest as opposed to horizontal one. As an example, listen to the wonderful baseline to 'For Once In My Life', not a single bar is repeated even though the chord progression repeats over and over again!

  • @stoplying
    @stoplying Před 2 lety +32

    Bass players just think differently. My ears always focus on the melody so when I hear this bass line, and see it being played, my brain goes bonkers. Well done!

  • @tenbroeck1958
    @tenbroeck1958 Před rokem +9

    This is maybe my overall favorite bass line. It has some funky aspects, it's jazzy, melodic, and yet subtle - somehow. In other words, it complements the music, without overpowering the song. James Jameson really was the "father of American bass playing". He never heard a song that his bass lines did not improve!

    • @duncanambrose206
      @duncanambrose206 Před 2 lety +8

      I mean its not an especially difficult song. Obviously you have to have some familiarity and fluidity with the instrument to play it properly, but a lot of the faster licks are patterns and motions that came naturally to me as I was learning, and I believe come more naturally for a lot of players. I don't know about learning this as a first song, but compared to other well known Jamerson lines, this one is pretty simple

    • @bramk6720
      @bramk6720 Před 2 lety +12

    I read an urban legend that James Jamerson was so drunk that he couldn’t sit on his stool while he played this bassline and most of the others on this album, so he recorded them on the floor. Absolute boozer legend.

    • @Murdo2112
      @Murdo2112 Před 7 měsíci +1

      It's not really an urban legend.
      There's video of the other musicians present at the session telling the story.
      Apparently, they were trying it with another bass player, Jamerson being off duty for the night.
      It wasn't working, so someone went out to look for Jamerson.
      He was found in a bar and brought to the studio.
      He was too drunk to sit on the stool, so he lay flat on his back, with someone holding a piece of paper with the chords written down, and improvised this bass line.
