My uncle had a styled B and wish I knew the year. He taught me to plow using a little two bottom, and I remember a small disk. Later he put me on a much larger JD (4020??) With a 4 bottom in lowland. The hydraulic was set on fast and I kept lifting the plow a little because I didn't want to get stuck. By the time I was done the 10 acres looked like a patchwork quilt. I found out years later he went back that night and plowed it over again. Sure miss my uncle. 😢😢
Great historical video. I probably have most of this history in books on the shelf but YOU make this history much more interesting with your spoken word.
Grandpa bought a used B after the first tractor he ever owned, a BF Avery, lost oil pressure. Dad bought the Avery and had to return it, when the JD B broke down. The oats were ready in late August, Dad was helping hauling in bags of oats the day I was born. The old Allis Chalmers 40 (40 inch head) combine didn't have a grain tank, the grin flowed into 2 bags that had to be hand tied and dumped on the ground, I tied quite a few bags of wheat and oats riding on that combine. That B was a huge tractor, when I was just a tike, compared to the Avery.
Grandpa used a 2 btm 12" trailer plow and a 9' drag disk on our 70 acre farm. Grandpa put up all his hay loose, he never owned a baler. It was about 1963 when he had the neighbor start baling for him, by 1966, Dad started buying equipment so that we could take over farming from Grandpa.
Another awesome video Locust Motor works! Nice job bringing the history of the B to life!
I have my grandpa's 1942 Model B that he bought at a farm sale in the early '80s. Hand start, and I've learned how to properly repair the Wico C magneto when the impulse spring broke. New tires on the rear that he put on in the mid-'90s, and I replaced the tri-rib front tires a couple of years ago. Awesome tractors from the time when farming evolved by replacing horses with machines. She's plowed Iowa dirt with a 2-14" IH plow that my great grandpa used for putting food on the table and a little bit of money left for the children that he raised.
My father in-law had 1936 B it had been switched to rubber tires. We repainted it 20 years ago. Great tractor
As a young boy I drove a 1943 B and still have a 1952 B that could run with a little work. It has been in the family since the late 1950’s .
👍🏻👍🏻thanks for watching
When I was 6 years old my uncle let this city kid from across the country drive his 1949 model B. Last year when I went to the family reunion I was surprised to see one there. Turns out it was the same tractor i drove 63 years earlier. It was a thrill to drive it again.
I’ve always wanted a B I have a lot of diecast tractors but the B is my favorite one.
We still have a 52 model B & a 52 model A on our farm. Used them well into the 90’s before they were “retired” to become barn queens.
I owned a 1950 B for a few years, it was a great tractor. Was the perfect size for many jobs, but eventually my needs grew to needing live PTO, live hydraulics, and a 3pt hitch so I sold it to buy another tractor. I have many videos of it on my channel along with my other tractors.
Thanks for sharing👍🏻 did yours have a John Deere 3 point?
@LocustMotorWorks it did not, I looked for a while for one too, but at the time, there were not many for sale.
My maternal grandpa had an early styled B. He owned many JD's including 60 and a 630, and later 2 3010"s but the B was his favorite all his life and he said it won't ever leave this farm and it didn't.
We used it on occasion and I decided it needed new plugs so i removed them and went to our local,(sadly now gone) John Deere dealership, Willowdell sales, for new ones. Told the parts guy I needed new plugs for a B and he got them for me. The didn't match the plugs I brought in, thread was too big. Good natured argument proceeded that I didn't know what tractor i had but I had the plugs! Bob the service manager came out and asked what was going on and I told him. "Oh no wonder "Orville's B had the high compression kit, you need these" We sort of laughed and said "hi compression". "yeah added 2 horse". About that time we all laughed and said 2 HORSE!!. To which old Bob replied " Hell that's a 10 percent increase you jerks"
I owned a 1950 B from 1988 till 1997,then sold it I miss it but needed the money for a skid steer at the time ,nice raking and grain drill tractor
Great video. I own a '37 short frame, I pull a John Deere single bottom 16.
Gotta love a classic. I have a 1938 unstyled B. And a 1940 styled B.
Nice! Is your 38 B restored or still original?
@@LocustMotorWorks the 38 is restored by previous owner the 40 I currently have torn down for a set of rings and reseal.
I’ve got a 49 b. I currently plow with a Ferguson 2 bottom.
I love your tractor history videos!
Can you make one on the model M?
I’ll see if I can find some info on them. Thanks for watching👍🏻
I have 2 styled John Deere B's. One that runs and drives daily and one that's a parts tractor. Maybe we will find another
I would like to see a segment done on the model 50 tractor
Sounds good👍🏻 thanks for watching
Happy New Year!!
Happy new year to you too! Thanks for watching👍🏻👍🏻
I have a 1937 General Purpose John Deere with steel on back but rubber on front
I believe that "distillate" was the same as kerosene. When petroleum was discovered there were no gasoline engines and kerosene was more valuable than gasoline because it was used for lighting. Then the gasoline engine and the electric light were invented and then gasoline became more expensive than kerosene.
I have a 49 B it pulls 2-12”trailer plow!
Nice👍👍 Thank you for watching
Do a video on the John Deere MT
I didn’t plow with my 1945,approximate year, model B but I did cultivate with a 2 row cultivator. In the fall , my job was to pull the full wagon, corn, to the corn crib and hook up to the elevator to unload. The hydraulic system couldn’t lift the full wagon, but after some was unloaded, then it could.
Good times👍🏻👍🏻
Aqui no Brasil 🇧🇷 ainda tenho o jd 820 desde 1957 e todos os catálogos e algumas revistas da época, não temos mais o JD modelo D infelizmente.
Love your videos and was wondering if you have one on the 820s and or 830s ?
On the list to make one in the future👍👍 Thanks for watching
Could you talk about the 4440
Have a 1936 B. Has eight bolt front
I have a 1942 styled B with dually steel wheels
Think you’ll cover the number series of John Deere tractors?
Yup definitely will start working through those👍🏻👍🏻 thanks for watching
I got on John Deere a
What is the difference between a styled and an unstyled tractor?
The hood and front grill screens are one of the easiest things to notice, they cover the radiator on the styled versions👍🏻 thanks for watching
