The World’s Worst National Team

- I received a great idea a while back. I've now finally been able to investigate -- what is the world’s worst men’s national football or soccer team? The FIFA world rankings are obviously flawed, but they're the only actual vehicle we have for giving us the answer to this question. You can imagine though, that the FIFA rankings of national teams are even worse at the bottom than at the top given the point structure, but the results of our unfortunate worst footballing nation seem to back up the idea that it is indeed the worst at soccer in the whole world.
I decided to exclude micronations from this list in order for us to find and discuss a ‘real’ country’s men’s national team, but it turns out I didn’t have to exclude too many for us to find the worst team out there. Something about losing to Malaysia 6-0 really livens up the debate. Or a 3-1 loss to an actual micronation, Bhutan, to get knocked out of the 2018 world cup process. This all as a nation that Sepp Blatter actually visited at one point to help encourage playing football / soccer. Oops.
Much Love,
Ze

If you're coming to comment about the Bhutan flag on the thumbnail, it's showing that this team LOST to Bhutan - which is downright impressive

never underestimate the ability of bosnian coaches to appear in the most random teams in the world
I'm not underestimating that fact, I'm just curious why? Are they like Brazilians who'll randomly appear in the strangest leagues
@@dandrecollier800 i can't tell you for sure, but here are my assumptions: first, football is far and away the most popular sport here in bosnia & herzegovina and there are a lot of aspiring players and coaches but the infrastucture is terrible and there isn't a lot of money to be made, so a lot of them will try their luck abroad. and secondly, bosnia $ herzegovina has a HUGE diaspora all around the world, so there's a lot of first- and second-generation immigrants that might still hold bosnian citizenship in countries like germany, switzerland, the us... the current dortmund caretaker manager, edin terzić, is born of bosnian parents, for example.

All this screams is that Zealand needs to do an International Management save with Sri Lanka now.
haha yeah
was going to comment this 😭 going to turn sri lanka into a world powerhouse
I’ve tried that. It was pretty fought tbh.

When’s he going to notice that Sri Lanka didn’t beat Macau 3-0, Macau forfeited the match because they didn’t want to travel to Sri Lanka after the Easter Bombings in 2019, a couple of weeks before the match was due to be played
wow lmao
The Macanese players wanted to play, because its their first real chance to get out of the first round of World Cup qualifiers in decades. Sri Lankan government has also agreed to send military and police forces to protect the Macanese players. AFC and FIFA also decided the game can be played on Sri Lankan soil.
Despite all these guarantees and the petition signed by players begging the Macanese FA to let them play probably the most important game in their international career, the Macau FA still decided to quit the competition.
There were rumours that the Macau FA just don't want to spend money on their national team, so they can keep it in their pockets. The incident has led to more than 40 Macanese national team members retired from international football. Its not Sri Lanka's fault, the bad guys are the Macanese FA here.
That is some messed up stuff. And also adding on the hopelessness of the football nation Sri Lanka.
After the withdrawal, a cup match have both teams not playing seriously as a form of protest. Here's the video

That Sri Lanka manager is doing his own journeyman save.
If I remember correctly the reason why Sri Lanka got the win was because Macau withdrew so they didn't even beat Macau, they were gifted it.
U r taking the right piss
Yeah, Macau's federation didn't want to send the team to Sri Lanka because of the Easter Bombings in 2019 so they forfeited the match 3-0
When I saw the 3-0 “scoreline”, I wondered if it had been a forfeit. Thanks!
The macau players petitioned to go, but the fa wouldnt budge. Why that match wasnt rescheduled or moved to a neutral ground is beyond me
11:34 i love how they said they announced a 24 man squad despite only having 23 players in the photo.
I'd like to think the 24th was the cameraman.
Then we all know who took that picture 🤣
Thankfully he didn’t make it far up enough to see Pakistan. 10 times Sri Lanka’s population, only ranked 5 places higher
and indonesia too lmao
@@ilovehannipham007 a lot of the Lower ranked national teams aren’t ranked correctly. Indonesia and many southeast Asian countries like Malaysia too are way higher than their ranking suggests. But this is also due to a massive improvement as years go by. For example, Malaysia used to lose 10-0 to UAE. Explaining their ranking. Years later against uae they lost 2-1. Malaysia was also put in the lowest World Cup qualifying round in asia due to their ranking. the first round. They destroyed timor 12-2 on aggregate. And advanced to the regular 2nd round where they finished 3rd in their group behind qualified Vietnam. Recently, Malaysia managed to be one of the 24 teams who qualfied for the Asian cup in 2023, their first qualification without hosting since 1980.
Indonesia. Their ranking put them in the lowest qualifying round for the Asian cup. They advanced into the regular round, and also recently one of the 24 teams in the Asian cup 2023.
Honestly these two teams of Indonesia and Malaysia are a great story of qualifying for a continental competition, but it’s asia so it doesn’t get attention outside of their countries. They started in the lowest round and qualified. However again this leads to the first thing I said that the rankings aren’t correct, as they are way above the level of their fifa rankings, but was put into the lower rounds due to the fifa ranking. It’s still a good story of how much a country can improve though. I think I spoke about Malaysia too casually, from losing 10-0 to 2-1 improving is an understatement.
However you can say Indonesia are probably the worst national team that loves football. Countries in this video like Sri Lanka or Pakistan football isn’t number one. With Indonesia, a huge population and a gigantic passion for football the fact that they aren’t good at least in asia is a problem. Football is absolute HUGE in Indonesia. The quality is another story.
@@usersixnine347 Singapore has meanwhile gone the other direction, dropping from a ranking of 127 to ~170 now, with Malaysia managing to beat it 7-0 in the SE Asian Games this year. When people say that mainland China's team is bad, I remind them that they're still good enough to beat Singapore 4-0. Sometimes we blame our small population, until we see that Denmark, with the same population as us, has managed to produce sporting talent like badminton World No. 1 Victor Axelsen. Its also quite telling that Singapore's national U-23 team are also wooden spooners in the domestic league (yes, all our U-23 players are put in the same football team (Courts Young Lions) in our local league). Unlike Indonesia though, the public has tepid interest in the local league, such that my colleague went to troll others by saying that he's a bigger fan ot _Tanjong Pagar_ United then the Premier League's Big 4-6 (actually he's not a football fan). The women team meanwhile was unranked by FIFA for a while as they hadn't played enough competitions
@@lzh4950
Oh didn't expect someone to reference Denmark, but yeah I agree. We Danes tend to punch above our weight pretty consistently in many disciplines. My main competition I like to follow is pro CS:GO, and these days there aren't many top teams who doesn't have a Dane in the lineup, and the lineup considered the best to ever play CS:GO was a full Danish lineup. With all this said, we will sadly never be consistent world beaters, as we simply don't have a population for it, but no matter the odds we sure will do our best to try and be. :D
Fun fact: Ahmed Waseem Razeek played in the past for Rot-Weiß Erfurt and the FC Magdeburg in the third division of germany and even played for 14 minutes at his time at Union Berlin in the 2. Bundesliga. So I'll make the case that he is probably the best player of Sri Lanka.
He literally scored 4 goals in one game for them yesterday too! Sri Lanka have now got a few UK based players in the squad and are definitely improving!

I just wanted to say the same thing!
Lmao that's actually funny if you think about it. Macau players were like ''ayo fuck this game, I'd rather live and try to qualify next year than risking it all for a group stage and lose all the games''
@@Lima0 it wasn't like that. Macau players wanted to play. Sri Lankan government guaranteed security in the field. Even FIFA and the AFC repeatedly said Sri Lanka was secure. Pretty much impossible unfortunately since country youth ratings are fixed values and cannot change. So Sri Lanka will always produce bad regens.

Bhutan isn't a micro state. It's bigger than Belgium. It's just all whopping great mountains. I can't see them playing at the base of Everest
Micro state means either very small land area and/or very small population. You could potentially argue Bhutan is a microstate by the small population definition, it only has ~760,000 people in the entire country.
@@winsingtoniii681 Bhutan isn't on the UN list of microstates, nor any other reputable source.
@@kieronparr3403 I understand that, but though they technically aren't a microstate, for the purposes of this video I can understand why their very small population is being noted. A nation of 760,000 having a poor national team is very different from a nation of 22 million having a poor national team.
They don't have everest.
@@nirajangc1899 I must have meant the Himalayas in general
I live in Sri Lanka and why the level of football is so low is the politicization of the football federation (I remember the ffsl representative to fifa being banned for life on charges of stealing money or something which is common in the political system as well) among other sports and the team selection etc being based off of people who are friends of the family in power, the Rajapaksa's. The reason why the forces are so involved in club football and rugby is bcoz the sons of the Rajapaksa's being from the forces (namely navy). Even cricket has been on the decline in recent years bcoz of this situation if you look carefully.
Sri Lanka have had a HUUUUGE dip in form across the last few years but will definitely be picking up now, a good SAFF Championship display against much better sides, and now hosting their own International Tournament in Colombo! Yesterday they drew 4-4 with Maldives!
By the way, Netherlands has a population of 17 million, so Sri lanka does not have twice the population. I think you got confused with Belgium.

It really is a trend in lesser (football-wise) Asian countries that some of the strongest clubs are armed forces teams, especially when everyone else is amateur

Bhutan the world's only microstate that is bigger than Belgium and just smaller than Switzerland and the Netherlands
I think what makes Bhutan a microstate contender is their population of 700k, rather than their actual size. Switzerland has 8 million people, Netherlands 17.

Mainly gross mismanagement and the fact that there hasn’t been a professional league since 2018. The league is starting tomorrow and some clubs are making quite the effort so this should improve the situation
I haven’t read all of the comments but one other point is that Sri Lanka has a high migrant population, so they work in other countries (Asia and Middle East) for a good portion of the year.

The AFC Challenge Cup is for teams who LOST in the first round of Asian World Cup Qualifying to play in a tournament.
