      Opposite of inline is parallel. The dumb 'quad' name doesn't make sense when it looks the same as Roller Skates ... the dumb 'in line' name is Roller Blades.
      Yaw and roll .... wheel base and wheel tracks are the words u are looking? Wheel profile is the word u are looking for to describe width/thickness and dimensions.
      I can tell its because one can pivot and play with chamber angle(your ankles) ... but calling them QUADS ate still dumb.

    my best advice for new skaters is to pick whats best for what you have around you.
    I started out on inlines as a teen. i skated the streets, parks, etc. when i got back into it as an adult, that was all gone. local towns outlawed outdoor skating of any kind, all the skate parks closed, and regular parks had no skating signs.
    the only places I had left I could go to get back into it were the local rinks. after about 4 pairs of inlines, i eventually switched to quads and never looked back. because whats available in my area heavy supported quad skating over inline skating. and while you can inline skate in a rink, the atmosphere caters to more dancy music, which made me want to skate more dancy. something quads are very good at.
    by no means does that make quads better than inlines, but for the area i live, it made it a better choice.
    eye up whats in your local environment before making your choice, to see what options you have skating wise.

      by this logic i probably shouldve tried inlines, all we have in my city are crappy roads to skate on. but ive actually been having a great time with quads in this tennis court ive been skating in. plus im gonna move out in a year or so, probably to a city that actually has a rink

      I started skating (quad) in the mid 60s and first tried inline at age 37. By the time I reached 50 quad was coming back so I got a new pair of quads and as soon as I stood up on them I went down…HARD, nearly breaking my upper arm. It scared me so bad I gave them away. I, especially as an older person have much more control on inline skates. - I was really surprised about flailing and falling on my quads since that was all I’d skated with from the 60s to 1998.

    Hey Lino isn't it a bit too hot still for that sweater? I feel hot just looking at it!
    I find quads are a lot more friendly to total newcomers to skating because the blades feel so unstable at first, you can relax a lot easier on quads before you get your equilibrium skills.

    Regarding ankle support, it's easier but not necessary? Just thinking this because of the speedskates, they don't have ankle support AND having bigger wheels.
    Is that correct? Hope that's correct, because that means that the swiveling my ankle is on me, it's my posture that's wrong and not perse the boot not supporting me enough, right?
    Anyway, owning my first pair of skates for 4 days now, hehe.. Today i'm gonna teach myself to stop, slide and do the cross overs :D wish me luck ;)

  • @cameron3914
    @cameron3914 Před 2 lety +6

    I’ve always wondered with quad skates for speed turning do you also use a cross over technique or do you need to use a totally different skill??

    • @shawnhollern
      @shawnhollern Před 2 lety +4

      its the same. only the ankle posture is different. on inlines, your ankle is kinda pressed against the wall of the shell. but on quads your really bending your ankle while all 4 wheels are on the ground. its definitely a flexibility that takes practice, especially if your transitioning from inlines to quads.
      the crossing on quads is also alot deeper. it took me a while to figure that one out. the shorter wheelbase will get your tripping over your front break or your toes if you cross like you do on inlines. inlines long wheelbase will let you step over and forward. while quads make you step only over, because its wheelbase is so much shorter. if you run a really deep rocker on inlines (like 76/80/80/72, 72 in front) youll know a similar feeling.

    Great helpful video! My two questions are: if skaters dont usually use brakes (like mentioned in video), how do they stop? The brakes on the quads look especially difficult for your body to do when not comfortable with turns.
    In terms of stability, do you recommend quads or inline? I find sometimes the wheels of the quads (or even inline sometimes) push me towards the direction they want such as backwards if there’s a more downhill patch. Lol wondering what i should do to have more control of them. Thank you if you take the time to read 🙂

      Update? I grew up on inline skates and the first time I tried quad, it was a complete disaster. I may have given up too soon because I was so advanced with my inline skates that I just didn't expect it to be that difficult or different for me. I'll have to try again one of these days, but first I have to get back into rollerblading, been sick for years and am only just now able to try it out again. First time skating in many years, currently waiting for my skates to arrive.

    Not sure you were skipping terms like lateral support on purpose, but because of that you overused the words "like this" and "like that", so the video sounded a bit disorganised. I guess you did this, because you aimed the vid for total beginners, but still you could have introduced those terms. For first timers.
