I arrived in NYC mid Jan 1983, 32 years old, snow on the ground, freezing cold, didnt know anybody, thin jacket, Blue Jeans, holes in my Boots where I had put cardboard in both of them to keep out the cold and wet, a small Carry On bag, A British Passport and $27 cash in my pocket and nobody to call for more.... I loved it from the moment I got off the JFK Airport Bus at East 41St and Park Avenue South.. I lived there for two years and it was the City I needed at that time, and what a time it was... First I lived in an International Hostel on W88St and Central Park West and then later moved into a Studio on 9th St and 2nd Ave in the East Village and became a Bicycle Messenger ...I will always love the Big Apple...
Two different personalities completely ! It's easy to see and hear why Robbie wrote most of those outstanding songs ... His street wise smartness is so evident here . For me he's the coolest cat in rock and roll history ... I also believe that the fallout between the two men was blown out of proportion ,especially by the music press ...IMO ...
Writing songs is a specialized talent. More so other things- and RR pretty much had it all. Having said that- it woulda been cool if RR got 50% of publishing and the four others split the remaining 50%…
He was in a movie "Carny" with Jodie Foster and Gary Busey. He never looked more handsome than in that movie. I watched a few days ago, and might watch it again, just to see Robbie. It is available on Utube.

Yes, but if you read Robbie's book, they were quite close, and Robbie look at Levon as his big brother. Robbie was an only child that grew up with a physically abusive stepfather. I'm an only adopted child, I understand some of Robbie's personality. It was only later when Levon started to do heroin that things changed between them, but I think Robbie always loved Levon, even years later when Levon wrote his book and it came out how bitter he was.

Robbie wrote the songs while the other guys (which the exception of Garth) were partying and doing drugs. They all contributed to the arranging, but it wouldn't have been right for Robbie's songwriting work was credited to all of them.

I actually liked driving in the city when I lived there - it was like a real-life video game. That said, I never had to drive or park anything that big...
I got the hang of it after a few days. First time though, a Tennessee boy thrown into the fire. I stayed across the GW in NJ, so made that drive back and forth every day, then mostly worked in and around midtown. When you’re driving something that big you have to get in a NY state of mind, a little passive, a little aggressive and know which to be when.

It's a little more complicated than that, but yeah a lot of the fighting was about Robbie getting most of the money/song credits. Both of them have books which are great reads- Testimony for Robertson and This Wheel's On Fire for Helm.
I haven't read Levon's book, but Robbie is very open about it in his book "Testimony". He didn't do heroin, which Levon, Rick and Richard did. However, as Robbie wrote it is hard to be in judgement of someone when you are no angel yourself.
RR cant sing a lick, and he will answer for all he did wrong. I know every member of the band added lyrics together, basement tapes even Dylan knew what was going down. No person can take Dylan's poetic words and say another wrote the songs. Attitude can ruin the life of musician. RE did that well
RR put The Band on the map. He did 90% of the writing and business decisions including his idea to film the movie. The others were getting smacked and could care less about the band. They tried to reform in the 80s and 90s without RR, but they couldn't write music or capitalize on their old success. I love Levon, but (unlike RR) his talents were singing and drumming. He screwed himself out of the deal.

Actually Robbie wrote the lyrics to the Band's album while the others were getting smashed. So he gets credit.
