  • This is an oral history interview with Captain Snyder, the Captain of the only battleship in the world during the Vietnam War.
    This interview was conducted on board that ship, Battleship New Jersey, by the staff of that museum.

    There is interview footage of him from the history channel special entitled battleships which came out I believe in 1999. He had a colorful sense of humor and way with words as he described operations in Vietnam. I wonder if there’s any extended interview footage from when they filmed that documentary.

    God bless you my brother good to see you still alive.
    I will be going out to my former duty station for first time since 1987 but she gone now old long beach naval station.
    Going back to long beach on my trip to mexico next month.
    Gonna go see my old church
    First baptist of long beach on 1000 pine st long beach gorgous southern CA
    I hope to tour our sister ship
    Uss Iowa too

    Was you my former xo or co I can not recall?
    I also want to know if my number 2 commanding officer
    Admiral Milligan alive if not can you tell me where he is buried want to see his grave next year if still alive or later this year if he buried in long beach or San Diego CA?

    Admiral Snyder I did not make it to last gathering. I hope to go to next year's.
    I moved to tiger town USA city of champions
    Massillon Ohio
    Home of my alma mater
    Massillon tigers high school football team
    Division 2 number two team now in all of Ohio . Ever hear of them ? We got 24 ohio highschool state championships.
    9 national titles. Past 5 years in row we went to playoffs
    We went to division 2 state championship game four years row lost to Akron archbishop hoban. And Cincy LaSalle lancers in 2015.
    We did not make state last year we lost to green last year in round 4

    Where's the rest of the interview? There is more, certainly, the Captain is cut off in mid-sentence.

      Unfortunately the tapes degrade over time and this is all we've managed to recover
