- After hunting the big woods of northern Minnesota for more than 20 years, there are three types of rut funnels that stand out above the rest when it comes to finding deer during the rut. In this video I summarize the cover types, topography and setups behind my three favorite big woods rut funnels.

Just wanted to let you know I found the channel and like it. Pretty chill without the commercial presence, feeders and food plots. I hunt & live in central/northern Maine so we share some of the same frustrations finding mature bucks.
Thanks I appreciate the note. Yeah the big woods like you and I hunt can be a love-hate thing but overall it has allure that you just can’t get from a feeder or food plot. Thanks for sharing
Number 4...pinch point between river and logging road that make connect to larger tracts of land..look at your map and find the best squeeze point. I like one where I can just step off the road and see all the way to the river. Deer don't like crossing those roads in daylight if they can avoid it. Number 5....where roads on each side of the woods create a pinch point.

I don’t have much luck hunting by roads just bc they don’t like to cross em but maybe your talking rarely used roads unlike the spot I hunt w a certain wind. Too much traffic by my spot until things heat up. Landfill (bedding) west of road and ag fields east of it. I hunt the only tree big enough for a stand (enough cover) on a wooded fenceline about 300 yds E of road with 4 apple trees 100-150 yds east of me. Seems like they (nicer bucks) really only move in daylight w a quartering wind (NE) especially on a cold front around Halloween is best. Nice post I’m always trying to learn ways to kill the next buck. I am currently trying to build up some areas in a cedar swamp high enough to plant some apple trees. I cut a half acre clearcut last year. There are some high spots 1-2ft above the water line where bigger maples and cedars were growing on. Problem is they are only 6-8ft circles. A apple tree needs maybe 10-15 ft of space for the roots. Built corrals similar to Lincoln logs around 4 high spots maybe 12ft across. Gonna fill in the low spots w the deadest maples I can find laying the muck. Overtime they will breakdown and fill the lower spots in. Wish me luck hope I’m not pissing in the wind. Bc it’s a half mile walk from the road. Hauled in some bagged dirt I got on clearance last winter w my snowmobile. Made it most of the way w minimal cutting of trees.

Best of both worlds indeed! It’s a lot of fun throughout the year. I’ve got about 4 spots I still need to prune lanes and walking trails on way back in the big woods. Not going to be fun but I usually wait until later august so all the buds and branches have hardened off. That way once I prune, they don’t grow back before fall. How’s your fall setting up here? Nice to see big woods hunting tips. Figuring out the most traveled funnels is key to having consistant success in big woods areas and can be productive esp with buck crusuing during the rut.
It really is. Big woods settings the bucks aren’t concentrated so it’s critical to find some sort of feature that will make them come by your stand. We mostly just focus on that seeking stage and then peak breeding as well. Early season is tough in the big woods. Need them cruising like you say.

Conifer on leway sides of ridges they seem to pile up in them on rainy and cold days one windy.

Awesome video, I'd love to move to Minnesota some day for the hunting and fishing opportunities. Would you say the wolves have taken over northern MN and impacted the deer herd? That's what alot of people tend to say but judging by your success, it seems that if you put in the work you will find nice bucks
It’s great up here! Wolves really made a full comeback around the late 90’s early 2000’s. Since then they are all over north half of the state. Cool animals but yes they are hard on the deer herd. Honestly, the deer find a way to survive still though. Fantastic opportunities on public land still. Just have to work harder than you would in day Iowa or Kansas or someplace like that.
U might want to wait for the pro-wolf crowd in St. Paul to 1st disappear. They r logging public hunting ground & have created loop-holes in the law to accomplish this. If u have alot of money they r always selling public land after they log it due to their manufactured wood agenda. Then they buy other land with hope of doing the same to that. MN in their eyes is on the way to becoming California. 😮
Nice video I hunt the same type of land in Michigan’s U.P. thanks for the tips. Question for you - have you ever seen a buck rub on a jack pine? I have seen scraps below them but never a rub
Something special about this landscape we get to hunt. I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I feel bad for all the other folks that will never get to experience what you and I do. Regarding your question- yes, I have seen rubs on jack pine. Seems in our area the bucks will run what ever type of conifer is available.
