How do you ensure there are now asbestos fibres in the black air pump? How do you clean it out?.

Hello, I live on a military base where the housing materials contain asbestos. There’s also an asbestos area near housing that is a 70-acre solid-waste dis- posal area. When looking up reports from I find some from about 10 years ago saying the asbestos is not airborne. However I believe it may be airborne now. How would I test to see in there are airborne asbestos particles in my house?

Hi Joe - you can either hire an environmental consultant in your area or if you want to do it yourself … you’d need a high volume vacuum pump along with the asbestos tem or PCM cassettes. Running the air samples for about 120 minutes at 10 liters per minute for the PCM method. Let us know and we can provide some more details if needed.
Otherwise you can also use low volume pumps and have them running longer per day.

I live in a big luxury building in New York City and they’re taking out asbestos on some of the floors. No one of my floor is doing is getting rid of the Asbestos. Is this something I should be concerned about?

HI Alexandra - You may not have anything to worry about. Without knowing any more details - they may be taking out asbestos in those floors because they are doing renovations or something. If you do have asbestos in your building - if its in good condition - its not a hazard and isn't necessarily required to be removed. You can speak with your property management office and ask about when the most recent asbestos survey was done and ask to take a look. Or also ask them if there is any asbestos or lead in the building. They technically have to disclose these findings to tenants.

I just got house..and all vinyl flooring has asbestos underneath and some of them removed and installed with the carpet..I just removed all the carpet..now I realized probably asbestos still there...I'm scared now..what should I do?

Hi Glenda - If the linoleum and carpet were taken out together - that is a better scenario than removing the linoleum by itself - especially using a machine.
But, in this situation - if you are worried about asbestos - then best would be to have it sampled with a local company.
We would suggest TEM samples so that you will know if there is asbestos fibers in the air.
This is all under the assumption that the material is asbestos containing. If you can - it would be best to sample it to know for sure.
      Hope that helps.

When you are performing a post PCM test what is your flow rate and for how long ?

    • @markcarrier2773

You should sample at 15-16 litres of air for 3-4 hours try to collect a minimum of 3000 litres of air

False 12 flow rate for 120 minutes for 1200 tem cassettes

@@kingmussalini2430 Incorrect. The question was for PCM cartridges, not TEM.
I was taught the minimum volume collected should be at least 2700 liters for PCM clearance sampling. That's 3 hours or 180 minutes at 15 liters/minute. The maximum permissible flow rate is 16lpm but I have found that anything over 15lpm runs the risk of shredding the filter in the sampling cartridge.
If you live in a very humid area like the deep south slow down your airflow to about 1/2 of normal. High humidity in the air at a high sampling rate will cause the filter to soak up moisture from the air. The filter will not become transparent when you treat it with acetone vapor on the microscope slide. It'll turn grayish milky white and you will not be able to see anything under the microscope. Contaminated acetone or non lab grade acetone will cause the slides to be milky as well.

Good question, John, I guess You-Tube, like most, think, ASBESTOSIS < is a "JOKE", as here in Pennsylvania, & New York, the old school buildings, are "LOADED", & the Twin Towers, in NY, were built, in 1967, 'LOADED", with Asbestos, So Federal OSHA, doesn't require, air monitoring, only Commercial Insurance, does.
