    The EPA made news coming to a baseball field in El Dorado Hills, CA ca 2010, sliding into bases in bunny-suits and respirators, while belt-samplers sucked up the dust. El Dorado County is full of asbestos rock, as is much of East Bay near San Francisco. The Sacramento Bee story said an autopsy on a dog showed its lungs filled with asbestos particles, though they spend time sniffing the ground. Never heard the-rest-of-the-story. I would be most concerned breathing that white dust on gravel roads in the county since likely asbestos in the thick white dust which covers your car after a summer drive. Unlikely it is the chemical itself, rather just that the fine fibers can overwhelm your lungs ability to sweep stuff out with mucous. The "invaders" tie up your white blood cells and distracted them from their normal job of killing cancer cells which continually pop up.

    Hello, I live on a military base where the housing materials contain asbestos. There’s also an asbestos area near housing that is a 70-acre solid-waste dis- posal area. When looking up reports from I find some from about 10 years ago saying the asbestos is not airborne. However I believe it may be airborne now. How would I test to see in there are airborne asbestos particles in my house?

    • @theesselchannel
      @theesselchannel Před rokem

      Hi Joe - you can either hire an environmental consultant in your area or if you want to do it yourself … you’d need a high volume vacuum pump along with the asbestos tem or PCM cassettes. Running the air samples for about 120 minutes at 10 liters per minute for the PCM method. Let us know and we can provide some more details if needed. Otherwise you can also use low volume pumps and have them running longer per day.

      Definitely not, onset of disease from asbestos exposure is 10-40 years. And usually depends on how bad exposure was. A small one time thing like him sniffing a rock in theory wouldn’t be a big deal. Usually exposure needs to either be massive in a short period of time, or slow and steady over years of light exposure to cause disease

      Because the vast majority of asbestos is not harmful. There are multiple types of fibers, and it's only the small, sharp ones that are dangerous because once they get into your lungs, you can't get them back out. But most asbestos fibers are not that variety - they're much bigger, coiled up fibers that you can exhale from your lungs after inhaling them. Also, you're not going to get asbestos fibers from the rocks that asbestos is made from - those are rocks, they're not processed yet.

    • @GeologyDude
      @GeologyDude Před 2 měsíci

      You are totally correct that sniffing asbestos in very limited amounts probably isn’t harmful. But many people suffered and died in places like Libby, Montana from mining natural asbestos-rock that was not processed. Also, the government has officially ruled that exposure to any amount of asbestos is hazardous. So your demonstration relates bad information at the least, and harmful information to people that want to use your demo to justify unsafe behavior. BTW-serpentinite often does contain some asbestos, but there are many other minerals in there too. That is why it is often sold as a building stone. It is not all asbestos.

Just like his biggest legislative success was to give tax cuts to the reach, and also remove EPA laws, to protect the interests of corporations. Thank god Trump didn't succeed in that case. The bottom line, is that corporations knew how dangerous asbestos was , but paid some scientists to down play it. just like they're doing about fossil industries. I remember first at about 18 yrs old I removed asbestos tape from old heating ductwork in my parents house without a mask, in a confined crawlspace with no ventilation (before removing all the ducts themselves). Probably was in there doing it for 3 hrs. Also I've removed asbestos ceiling tiles on a couple of occasions, probably asbestos-mixed gypsum boards too, and old wallpaper with asbestos fiber backing. I only remember using a loose, disposable cheap cotton facemask one single time for a lot of projects over the years. I've probably already fucked myself with this so may as well just start eating the damn shit

      Hi Glenda - If the linoleum and carpet were taken out together - that is a better scenario than removing the linoleum by itself - especially using a machine. But, in this situation - if you are worried about asbestos - then best would be to have it sampled with a local company. We would suggest TEM samples so that you will know if there is asbestos fibers in the air. This is all under the assumption that the material is asbestos containing. If you can - it would be best to sample it to know for sure. Hope that helps.
