    This band also has history. Stayed together after the drummer lost his arm. They waited for him to heal and retrain himself to play with one arm. Loyalty with each other.

  • @sumonjamal1653
    @sumonjamal1653 Před 2 lety +2

    Def Leppard did debut in 1980 as a hard rock band... but they did incorporate pop elements into their music. Guitarist Phil Collen admitted that in the 80's, they felt musically closer to Duran Duran than Iron Maiden... Singer Joe Elliott was a huge fan of artists like Queen, Mott the Hoople, David Bowie, Blondie, etc... bands & artists that had pop & rock influences.
    Once Def Leppard's 1981 single 'Bringing on the heartbreak' became a hit, they decided to go in that direction on the 1983 album 'Pyromania'...That record was #2 only to Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' on the charts that year.
    With the 1987 album 'Hysteria', Def Leppard had drummer Rick Allen using an electronic drum kit to play beats after he had lost his left arm in a car accident... As a result, the album had a more 'futuristic' sound and had huge pop hit singles like 'Pour some sugar on me'... 'Armageddon it'... 'Love bites'... 'Hysteria'... 🔥🔥🤘🤘
    After original guitarist Steve Clark passed away in 1991, they recorded the album 'Adrenalize' w/ Phil Collen playing all of Clark's parts in the studio... the album still went #1 in 1992, but sold less than 'Hysteria'... still scoring pop hits like "Let's get rocked"... 'Tonight'... 'Stand u' ... 'Make love like a man'... Vivian Campbell (guitar) joined Def Leppard in 1992, taking Steve Clark's spot in the band.
    In 1996, Def Leppard did release a pop record 'Slang'... which was heavy on electronics and beats. It could only sell a half million copies in the US during the 90's alternative rock era... 'Euphoria' in 1999 was a return to a more rock sound, but again sold a half million copies.
    Def Leppard's 2002 album 'X' was another attempt at a pop record, but failed to sell commercially w/ the singles 'Now'... 'Long, long way to go'... 'Four letter word'.
    In retrospect, Def Leppard were not a band that enjoyed labels, but their 80's hits are always on demand in concert... and they do play the occasional new songs live. Creatively, they tried to make music that they felt strongly about... not just rock, but pop and other influences as well. That makes them very unique in a way that UK bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Motorhead could not appeal outside their heavy metal/ hard rock fanbase, but Def Leppard could.

    They are definitely influenced by Queen, women loved them, drummer had only one arm and they had Mutt Lang producing this album. Most of their songs were very catchy. 80's Metallica fans would have called this pop rock, some called them hair metal but I think of them as very similar to Queen. Lot of harmonies and catchy anthems mixed with rock and roll guitars.

    Excellent question Asia. I wish I had been in the conversation. According to past critics,
    if your music reaches a large audience, somehow that gives you a “pop rock” label which
    is seen as subpar. It’s b.s. This group had it all.

    Def Leppard was definitely a pop rock band. Pop does not have any other meaning than popularity. If you listen to rock music in the 80s they are on the charts. The idea of pop music has taken a drastic down step in the last 40 years. Cause in the 80s if you were a pop star you were talented af. Look at that video US for Africa. Those were the pop stars of the end of 70s and start of the 80s. Any star of today wishes they were that popular. Even if they technically have as many fans, that does not mean crap when the growth of nation has been so large.
