  • Just six years after Resident Evil released on PS1, 3D Game Design had evolved so much that Capcom was able to completely reinvent the Survival Horror classic from the ground up for the modern era! Resident Evil Remake, or REmake for short, has stood tall as one of the most popular games in the series and one of the best remakes to ever grace the world of gaming. After having played the original several times, how do I feel about REmake? That's what we are here to answer today!

@@baronvonslambert Technically I'd say REmake looks better than RE4 despite being the same age even with the fantastic HD project retexture by Chris and Albert (yes that's the modders actual names it's awesome) it kinda makes me wish someone would try the same idea now with modern tech cause you could probably get full on photo real with it like have a photo real looking background with baked lighting then have a super simplified 3d model underneath that gets a ray tracing path that effects any non static props and the character model which would also be as photo real as possible.
Considering how real games are looking with fully rendered 3d environments just imagine how good the prerendered idea could look now.

I did sort of like the strangely sterile mansion of RE1, it had that liminal feeling like the Overlook Hotel in The Shining. It fit well with the bizarre voice acting to make it all feel like a strange dream.

Dreamlike is a pretty good word to describe RE1's atmosphere, I find. I do enjoy it on it's own merits. Although, speaking of The Shining, I remember thinking that whole time "RE1 had to have been inspired by this" even down to the design of the Mansion's main hall. I am sure they were, just interesting to see someone else mention it.

But the original RE was originally supposed to be a remake of the Famicom 8 bit game Sweet Home. I probably should've mentioned that prior to the original RE video. But oh well. It also fits narratively rather well. The entire mansion is a front, not a real lived environment, so it makes sense if it feels sterile or somehow souless. If depicted that way, it works as environmental foreshadowing, like "something isn't right here, and I am not talking about the weird puzzle lock mechanisms and the strange undead creatures, there is even more hidden" vibe, which is exactly the case.

I dont think 60 frames per second makes a better game. But what DOES impress me the most is the level of absurd detail in REmake. For example run out of ammo and get close to the camera like in a save room with a close up overhead view. You can see the slide of the pistol locked back and the actual inside of the barrel modeled. RE 1 remake is the perfect example of how to remake of a resident game. Sorely because nothing was cut, more was added to the story to extend it, new mechanics, graphics were updated, gameplay and controls were modernized to be less clunkly.
This game came out in 2002 and was remastered in 2015 (yes this is a HD remaster of the 2002 GC version to be avaliable to more modern consoles but the main game is still a remake of the original) . Yet it still looks insane how well the graphics hold up, it still has that creepy atmosphere and is true survival horror. it doesn't try to hold your hand or hint what your objective is. The game forces you to think for yourself and that's also one of it's charms. Even if you aren't a great fan of tank controls, I would recommend this game.

Glad you like Remake. It is still my favorite RE game in the franchise. Gonna add something you might not have known(or maybe you do) and mention how I feel about 2 Remake.
For the little bit of info you might not have known, I believe another way to deal with zombies in this game besides shooting off the head or burning is to shoot of one of their legs. Something I believe is rare, but possible from the stairs.
Now a little bit of my perspective on 2 Remake if anyone wants to read it: I saw the announcement image of the Resident Evil 2 Remake back before I moved out of my homestate at least 5 to 6 years ago. Knowing what all Remake 1 did with preservation and improvement and knowing about Original Resident Evil 2's complicated development story made feel like the sky was the limit. I felt we could possibly see a little unlockable Elza Walker mode, or maybe even a nod to some of the content that was originally meant to be. Looking back now, this was unrealistic expectations. I still love 2 Remake as a game, but feel it falls flat on its face a little as a remake. The removal of the Crows and Spiders still confuses me to this day when in Remake 1 they were happy to not only keep those 2 enemies, but even keep and improve the sharks. Also I feel 2 remake missed opportunity of Claire and Leon not being able to communicate with each other throughout the story. I also miss the subtle creepiness of Chief Irons in the original.

note about the shotgun and such. It isnt because you were missing the heads or something. the shotgun actually is not a 100% crit kill if you aim up anymore. its percentage based. its too ensure players dont run around shotgunning them all and then crimson head would not even be a problem or a thing in majority of repeat playthroughs. so they purposely nerfed the shotguns critical percentage.

I disagree with the notion that REmake replaces the original RE1. I think it's on the same realm as something like Yakuza 0, as in it being a prequel, with a ton of nods to the rest of the series than an actual starting point. The original RE1 may be the same story, but it actually plays out different enough that makes it worth experiencing as well, and its version of the story is what the sequels actually build on. I think REmake is the superior game, but in no way it means it's THE one anyone should play. I think both of them are worth experiencing all the same.

They remove crows and Spiders that were very iconic, and worst of all a true B scenario. In B they not only change the Re2 layout but added more cutscenes and actual point of view of the other character. You can even leave some weapons and ammo for the B scenario. The REmake being sold as a Gamecube exclusive was definitely what caused its low sales. I don't think franchise fatigue set until RE0. But considering how the established playerbase for the games used to be on the Playstation and very few would move on to another company plus, like you mention, the established Nintendo fanbase wasn't really that much into this style of game. This was the worst possible console for the game in terms of potential sales.
This is what scared Capcom off the Nintendo exclusivity contract. While it's true that they went in a different direction for RE4 they also didn't waste any time in announcing an upcoming PS2 version.

you mentioned that the dog hallway's windows don't break immediately and instead break later, but that's not the case. the window cracks when you first enter, then when you go through the hallway the other way (enter through east wing, walk through, exit by main hall), the dogs get in. if you play it smart and use it as a one-way hallway, you can go through the whole game without encountering them.
also, the jill sandwich scene only plays in the remake if you try to get the shotgun before the cutscene where barry gives you the acid rounds (and you interact with both doors)

    • @SeventhheavenDK
      @SeventhheavenDK Před rokem

Actually it's the same in the original, technically.
If you go to the 2F and meet Barry at Forest' place instead of using the Lockpick to go through the east wing of the 1F, he will give you the Bazooka instead of the Rounds, and he will no longer appear at the Shotgun Room to save Jill, and you will also get alternative scenes with him, you will find him at the room where you have to drain the fish tank, and the file there will be incomplete because Barry destroyed some of the pages, following this route Jill actually starts to get suspicious of Barry earlier.

I played it in its blocky and Mesh translution effects Saturn Glory. I absolutely loved it almost as much as 2.. It was just me in my room in the dark and its atmosphere and pace just clicked..Saturn had it rough in 3d ports because it was made to be a arcade 2d juggernaught and i still own it all today. I am proud and am still so grateful for my mom always coming thru with a hard task of her spoiled brat s hopes..Miss you Ma..I digress..Eventually got my playstation when i started working and got my needed fix of Metal Gear Solid,Syphon Filter and my junky yearn for every Twisted Metal title and Vigilante 8 and Rougue Trip..Resi 3 i played on Ps1 and wasnt as impressed mainly for its short running playthrough. 16:31 The idea that one character is harder than the other is somewhat subjective. I did a run through with Chris on REmake for the first time in years, remembering him as the harder character. But I discovered that his advantages do outweigh the negatives and by the end of my play through I felt like Chris was easier than Jill. Chris has a number of advantages. For one, he can take considerably more damage than Jill which can be especially helpful during boss fights. Second, he readies his firearm faster than Jill which may seem like a small thing but when you compare the two, it feels like Jill takes forever to raise her gun compared to Chris, making it easier for Chris to shoot and run with higher reaction times - this is most noticeable when you watch Jill try to lift the rocket launcher. Chris may have a limited arsenal but he gets an ass load of shotgun rounds which is one of the best weapons in the game. Having limited weapons actually means less need for inventory slots. I would often only carry the shotgun in my inventory, sometimes even during boss fights like the snake. You can even get away with only carrying the loaded shotgun while not carrying extra ammo during the less dangerous parts of the game, freeing another slot.
