This movie has been the talk of modern Indian Cinema for a little while now, many were curious on our thoughts from both a musical and cultural view point.
It seems having Diljit and Parineeti playing such singing heavy roles was very advantageous. Ignoring NETFLIX's translated subtitles inability to capture the lyrical nuances of Amar Singh's songs in English, we attempt our best at reviewing such songs.
We've had quite a few issues getting this one out so we hope you enjoy and look forward to reading your comments.
Hope you enjoy and thanks for spending this time with us !

Chamkila is such a grey character and the director made sure that he left space for the audience to decide if his actions were good or bad. No glorification, just facts as they were.

Chamkila lyrics were like very clever they don't sound like pure dirty words they were more like double meaning words. in the movie lyrics are more Straightforwardly translated 🙏

The artist being beyond the concepts of good and evil as a thematic expression is something that features quite repeatedly in the works of Imtiaz Ali, and I find that beautiful. It's amazing how he manages to capture the contingent nature of these two concepts, while delving into the social/political (the khalistani separatist movement, in this case) context in which a particular form of art/artist flourishes.

Nobody can do what diljit has done here. Non punjabi people can not judge his performance. Nobody said chamkila was hero not even movie tries to do that .Lyrics in translation lost the magic of his cleverness of writing bcz his writing was double meaning in subtle way but here these lyrics were very straightforward. For example creamy boobs is not true translation , creamy chest is the nearest to true translation as far as i can translate it properly.

alot of people are talking about diljit and hes great but pari’s performance is something else. the hardwork she has put into this film is visible, from gaining 16 kgs for the role to practising everyday for 6 months in ar arhman’s studio for the perfect pitch because the scenes in the film where pari and diljit are singing are sung live at the akhada’s, they are not lip syncing and its so satisfying. and her acting is so amazing that it doesn’t feel like watching pari, its like watching amarjot.

a question the movie proposes is "who decides what art people should listen to?" i think its a very interesting argument because on one hand you would think that chamkila's songs promote stalking and objectify women which can have wrong impact on the society , which is valid argument.but on the other hand, shouldn't an artist be free to express himself in whatever way he wants..the songs were enjoyed by everyone then why call them so wrong. i think this is an interesting question to ponder on

It also really touches upon how subjective and even vexing morality can be. What's right or wrong for one may not be the same for another, yet there will always be groups who push the notion that only their way should be the norm. On top of that, people will jump to criticize others for being a certain way when in fact they themselves aren't really that different.

I think chamkila did a great job as a biopic and it also commented on the politics of taste. The dichotomy between something which is considered a high art and sonething which is seen as low brow or vulgar or cringe. It also has to do with class structure as well. Even in the movie you nust have noticed how the police officer says "truck drivers listen to songs of chamkila". It is directly a class comment. Like the taste is equated with low class and the refined middle class or upper class prefers high art. Its prevalent in all forms of art. People define others by their taste in movies, music or any form of entertainment that they consume. How the upper class tries to influence their taste as the only acceptable form of art and this is true not just of India or Punjab but all over the world across time periods
Also all folk music or dance has elements of vulgarity in it. The dominant societal structure always tries to suppress it. Even it's true if tribal culture as well

35:28 Because militants here are religious militants. So when Chamkila transitioned to singing religious tracks or tracks about history of sikhism; it gave police the impression that he is working with militants and propogating idealogy of militia via his songs. Why police made this hot take assumption is due to riots that were going around in that period. Riots were caused by religious militia (these people wanted separate state), and government (police) was the opposing party trying to stop these people from promoting this extremism. Hope that helps! And as always great job guys! My request again is please review Lagaan the next. Please.

Faana, played by Amir Khan and Kajol, one of the songs is "Chand Sifarish" you have watched it, not many people talk about this film but this is a successful film in 2006, Kajol's return after a hiatus from the world of films, chemistry with Amir Khan extraordinary, the film "Kabhi Alvida na Kehna" was originally for Kajol and was going to be paired with SRK again but she refused for the film Faana, at that time SRK was jealous because Kajol chose Amir over him 😂😂

11:40 Punajabi music is also very popular because of the presence in other countries like the US, UK, Canada etc. They bring back the international/ urban music in Punjab...well...in fact...they make music there..but for people here in Punjab...but with Urban beats and International style videography and setting

People tried hard by leaving bad reviews because right wing don’t like diljit because he is vocal about the misunderstanding about Punjab.

33:50 And that's what most of the singers do....well..at least what I have observed...and mainly from the Puniabi music industry today...that they'll sing what the audience wants to hear..and not necessarily..what they wanna sing or what they should be singing. In their interviews...I have heard this for...Honey Singh, Diljit himself, Karan Aujla...and many more....sad truth
