I picked up 2 of these at $580 sale! My girlfriend was looking for a cheap, decent laptop to last her for a couple years and so I found this for her on slickdeals. She immediately went and picked it up and after setting it up for her, I fell in love with it. I couldn't resist getting one for myself and I'm so glad I did. The next day the deal was over. I plan on adding a stick of RAM and maybe a bigger hard drive but it may not even be necessary. I was very impressed with the lack of bloatware, ease of setup and updated BIOS! Also, the startup/reboot time is FAST! I'm now an Acer fan- and shout out to whoever built this image! You're the real MVP! Also, you can disable the timeout for the keyboard back light by accessing it in the BIOS.

It can be a bit loud but the performance is actually pretty great as shown. It's a good laptop but exterior build quality could be improved.

It is not a bad laptop... Suffers from slight thermal throttling when you use it for a long time playing games. Other then that, it is a solid option if $800 is your absolute max budget, and you need something mobile, but still want to game.

You want out of the box thermals and a benchmark? Okie.
Thank you for tuning into CaveyManta Tech Tips! *Please note:* I have a 7th generation Nitro 5 with an I5 7300HQ. I don't expect the 8th gen bad boy to much different. So here we go!
*-On stock voltages, running the Unigine Heaven benchmark at 1080p, max settings no AA, for 30 minutes:*
The GTX 1050 Ti caps off at 1721 MHz, staying there forever. The 7300HQ maintains a consistent, but not very special, 3095 MHz across all cores. But during day/night transitional scenes, the CPU spikes up to 3395 MHz with temperatures going wonky momentarily. Temperatures never go above 70 degrees (F, because F Celcius, I'm an Amurrikan) across the GPU and CPU. These components actually heat each other up because the cooling system is shared between both of them. So if you're stressing one of them, expect both of their temperatures to climb.
*-Now how about some undervolting? I undervolt the CPU by 0.150V with Intel XTU, and the GPU by almost a whopping 0.200V using a custom voltage/frequency curve in MSI Afterburner.*
The GTX 1050 Ti starts out at 1810 MHz. Wow! Undervolting alone has given us a boost of 89 MHz! But it doesn't last long. Within 10 minutes, the frequency drops to 1797 MHz and stays there. And this is where my 1050 Ti is happiest. If it stays at 1810 MHz, it eventually ends up freezing. 1810 is only good for quick bursts. Now how about them thermalz? Guess what? It stays at 64 degrees max! Waow! Higher clock speeds with lower temperatures! Undervolting FTW!
*-What's it like gaming on the Nitroglycerine 5?*
Expect 1080p high settings churning out at least 60 FPS across modern AAA titles. Doom actually nets a nice 90-120 FPS at high settings with Vulkan enabled. Far Cry 4 is more taxing, sticking at the 60-70 FPS, where a game is just barely playable for PC gamers. I can actually feel the difference between miniscule changes in GPU frequency. Far Cry 4 feels more consistent at 1810 Mhz, like it has fewer frame drops. It's buttery smooth for the first 10 minutes, and then it feels more like...regular smooth. But 1797 MHz is where the GPU stays. So I'm happy with regular smooth.
*-Extra misc stuff, I don't know*
So, remember the nice 64 degrees the system stayed at during the Unigine Heaven Benchmark? Well, things are different while gaming. Far Cry 4 really heats things up, with the system occasionally reaching 70 degrees and beyond. Synthetic benchmarks don't tell you everything, kids. Don't forget it.
Now how does this thing sound? Idle, it is utterly silent. I can't hear it right now. But under load, it sounds only like a constant rush of air. No coil while to speak of. It's quite audible, but it's just air. My semi-closed Philips Fidelio X2 headphones block out the quite easily. I recommend using an external monitor so that you can keep the laptop, and thus the noise, away.
One last thing before I go. How's the screen? Well, it's perty good. It has fantastic viewing angles with its IPS technology, and it's darn sharp, being 1080p at its size. However, it's not perfect. There is obvious backlight bleed at the top when viewing pure black backgrounds, like on the numerous splash screens that you have to suffer through before playing every game in the world. Another flaw is the limited overall brightness. This thing is dark I'm not Dave Lee, so I don't have any fancy numbers. But expect nighttime scenes to be a little bit..dark.
So yeah, there's my random review of the Acer Nitro 5, which I typed in a reply where no one will actually read it. Isn't it great? Linus stands at a desk and plays with this thing for 5 minutes, providing barely any useful data, and he's going to get millions of views, while I'm not going to get anything. But that's because I'm too shy and lazy to make a video, I'm not famous, and I don't have an amazing personality like he does. Still, I wish Linus went more in-depth with this laptop.
Anyway, thanks for reading this...thing. Get a Nitro 5. $700 for a 7th gen i5 is a steal! And it'll be cheaper now that the 8th gen version is taking its place. I don't recommend the i7, because it'll get too hot, and the GPU is the bottleneck anyway. This is a gaming laptop. If you want to "create content" (what an umbrella phrase), you should seek a more high-end option. BAIIIIIII!

while this type of laptop is good for a short burst of gaming if you play for too long then the laptop gets too hot witch leads to thermal throttling also if you bend the screen even a little bit it breaks also the multitasking is kinda thrash while running a game and makes the laptop laggy this is from personal experience with the laptop but overall its a good laptop since you can combat the heat problem with a table fan or a laptop specific fan and you just need to be more careful and don t run other apps while gaming unless you expand the ram

Once you've used it for about 2 months, you should look up a reccomended overclock setting and how to unlock different settings like core voltage, max temperature, etc..
I did, and it runs wonderfully. However, Fortnite's base Save The World game may have lower framerates because of how much is going on on your screen. Other than that, it's amazing, and worth the $700 it's priced at now

I have a Nitro 5 with 7300HQ 1050TI and it was a great buy for $300. It's great cheap laptop to do some gaming on when your away from your gaming rig. It's played everything I wanted it to on medium setting 50-60 FPS. The GPU and CPU are matched pretty well and thermals are pretty good too, never thermal throttles even when GPU is overclocked. And has two hard drive bays.

  • @Peelster1
    @Peelster1 Před 4 lety

As an owner of the Acer Nitro 5 I have over time been finding some things wrong with it.
    1. Slight screen burn after a few minutes.
    2. The number pad, and right shift key are really close to the arrow keys, so sometimes when I am going for right arrow I accidentally hit 0 and when I go for right shift I hit up arrow instead.
    3. I found out from Dave Lee's review on this. I recommend you check it out as well. That the exhaust system is poorly set up and can result in overheating after over an hour of gaming. I have yet to personally experience this, but it is concerning.
    4. I made the mistake of getting the model with the 1050 as opposed to the 1050 ti. Both are stickered as Oculus Ready, but I would highly recommend going for the 1050 ti. Better yet, get a 1060 if you are going for vr.
    5. This laptop does not have a display port or mini display port which makes Oculus Rift S setup more difficult if not impossible. Oculus Rift ready? Yes. Oculus Rift S ready? No.
