- Kimi Werner goes on another friendship adventure to the Big Island. She explores Mauka to Makai (mountain to ocean) and leaves her comfort zone of the underwater world to try new things like bow hunting and surfing. She visits Haloa Aina (link below), a native forest restoration project that plants native trees and manages the over-population of invasive species such as feral sheep and pigs through simply using subsistence hunting. She is guided by her friend Justin Lee on a bow hunting expedition, in hopes to cook a feast for a special birthday celebration. Buddy also gets to see his first waterfall ever!

I had been hoping that you all were going to show some bow-hunting at some point and y'all really delivered.
I appreciate Kimi talking about the different mix of emotions and adrenaline that she felt after taking down the ram because I think it's one of the things that has kept me from trying out hunting/fishing ("maybe I'm just not cut out for it if I would feel bad after doing so?"). Seeing her manage those emotions and seeing her mental process as she comes to terms with that has really helped give me a push to try it out as I aim to eat more sustainably.

I love that you don't pose and take a photo with your "kill". That is the most beautiful part. Hunting doesn't have to be a show of strength, it's okay to just have respect for the animal, and with that I mean that you don't have to pose with it afterwards.

I hunted the Big Island near Pohakuloa Training Area a few times back in 1980- 1982 when I was stationed at Schofield. We hunted with hand guns mostly, but sometimes with M16's. Wild pigs and goats - not sure which one I like better, they both taste delicious!
Damn! Kimi is now the sharp shooter of Maui. Wow, I had to watch that shot a few times.

I needed this. A decade ago we fell in love with the Island. Taught my first little one to snorkel before 2. Bought a place there. It has become part of us. Looking to hunt more there in the future. This was beautiful. Mahalo nui loa.
Lamb is my favourite! I was just telling my social worker yesterday how I love making a really cheap soup out of lamb offcuts. The fat is what makes it good!

Awesome! Thank you. I had a similar experience, only yesterday I caught my first fish as I recently started spearfishing. I felt a variety of overwhelming emotions after the kill and now a day later, my head is still trying to process it. The compassion for the prey is going to be there always and I hope to be strong enough to manage it. If I have the courage to eat it, also I need to be courageous to kill it, and sustainably be part of this beautiful planet.

Buddy is so cute! We're raising our child, born close to the same time, the same way. It's so cool to see his development and get ideas from you for continued safe exposure. I feel guilty when I break away to do things that are necessary. It's nice to know we're not the only ones.
