Here’s day 3 of our big island Trip with the Fam! We wasn’t getting any action on the pole so we decided to jump in the water and bash some fish! That’s the good thing about having options lol. Anyways I finally got to jump in some big island ocean and hit a dive sesh.. I came with the fam so we just stayed in the bay.. And Bra… Big islands water is pretty killa! Everything seems so fresh lol. The ocean is ice cold. The water is super blue.. and the fish look really healthy.. the colors are super vibrant.. I even had a nice size Moana come right up to me. Super fun sesh with the fam nothin crazy… then we headed out to south point and all I gotta say is… the views getting there was ridiculously insane I cannot believe how nice it is out there.. it’s mind blowing.. we ended up finding a spot to holo, stayed couple hours, ate some fish we caught earlier and had the looooooonest drive home 🤣 anyways hope you guys enjoyed that episode stay tuned for part 4 Love You Fakaz🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼

ya, Big Island gots choke freshwater springs that come up right near shoreline. Causes all kinds swirling when mixes with the salty watah. Some da tidepools amazing: one inch cold on top of warm ocean when tide come in, 12"+ deep when tide come in.

You mentioned about water clarity: Fresh water is lighter than salt water so it stays higher near the surface. That side of the island is mostly brackish water so you'll see that difference in clarity on the surface than deeper below. Did you also notice the coolness of the water? Colder on top, and warmer underneath?

I'm shocked the kamaʻāina didn't tell you about Kaneʻeleʻele Heiau, a luakini heiau (sacrificial heiau). It's located on the left side of the path that you guys walked on in the area of that big concrete slab, remnants of an old warehouse.
That "oily oils" that you were talking about is "wai kai" (spring water). Punaluʻu Beach has a lot of springs. Punaluʻu translates into English as (spring water dived for). In ancient times, the villagers would swim out into the bay and dive to the bottom to collect their drinking water with their ipu (gourd/squash).
Please remember, for conservation purposes:
Hawaii Administrative Rules chapter 13-95.1 prohibits the catching of kāne uhu for the two large species of uhu, uhu ʻeleʻele and uhu uliuli. The rules also limit the bag size to two uhu per person per day and set minimum size requirements for different species of uhu:
Large-bodied species: Minimum size of 14 inches
Small-bodied species: Minimum size of 10 inches
Female uhu pālukaluka and uhu ʻahuʻula: Minimum size of 14 inches.
Also, disturbing/killing the uhu while they're sleeping is ʻaʻole pono.
