- Grids are a tool that artists use to replicate or enlarge images onto paper, canvas, and other drawing surfaces. In this tutorial I will show you how to use a grid to draw and enlarge an image onto another paper. I am using a photo I took of the Taj Mahal as my example. You can use any image you would like, the technique is the same. This technique is great for transferring images onto canvas for painting as well as for painting large scale murals. Enjoy!
Supplies
Image printed on printer paper
Paper or canvas
Ruler
Pencil and eraser
Steps
Draw the grid on your image (or on a piece of clear acetate and place over the image, or use a computer to place a grid on the image before you print it)
Draw a grid on the surface you are transferring the image to making sure it is to scale
Transfer the drawing in pencil square by square
Erase the grid
Add details, shadows, etc.
Tips
Keep the grid square
Draw the grid lightly since it will be erased
Dont draw too many details before the grid is erased
If doing this project with a group, its easy to make the grid in photoshop and place it over the photos before you print them. I did this with my high school class with their portraits and just placed a thin white grid over them in photo shop and printed them out.
Artists that use this technique
Chuck Close is my favorite

Thank you for your tutorial, I'm learning how to draw this way now.
Visual arts techniques. Except I'm doing 1cm squares for a standard photography size drawing.
This was very helpful.
But I plan on doing a larger drawing this way.
Thanks for the share. This really helps to keep my mind from becoming overwhelmed when attempting to tackle something with so much detail...breaking it down into bits is a huge help!

No! Not math! :) I used this method in high school but isn't there an easier/quicker way to accomplish accuracy? This just saps any motivation to draw right out of me.
Great video :)

So if you do a 6x6 grid like hers but you want the pic to be double you would need to a 12 inch paper in height and width?
Amazing. Do visit India again ❤❤❤
Just in time. This is our math project.
lol
How do you know how big you need the squares
Wait...how did you know that you needed 1 1/2 inch for the second paper?
She's scaling up the picture. If she wanted to make even bigger she could choose 2 inches for the 2nd paper
@@eevagirl if the squares on my photo are 1x1 how much should they be on my canvas ?
Can you help me with that I mean can you make a video about how to draw animals like reptiles amphibians dogs and cats horses Birds and fish that will help me very much thank you 😉❤👍👌✌

Is there any place I could get it print cheap bc ink is expensive and my mom told me to not print pictures like that.
Maybe try looking through magazines? You could use pages from books, too!

They use a plastic photo copy thing to put the reference I'm looking for that video I can't find it they must have deleted it. I needed it for something important to repeatedly do
Its not technically correct to say all grids have to have a square shaped boundary or they won't work. You can grid a landscape proportional aspect just as easily. The mindful point is ea little square has to be square to work. So if the vertical is 5 squares of 1inch then the horizontal squares need to be inc square but you might need 6 or 8 or 10 collumns of 1 inch squares to scale out the image or reduce it. Will your paper fit the horizontal at that scale...
What should I do if I only have reference from my smartphone?
How am I going to know if my calculations are correct cause I don't have enough cash to make a copy of my references I actually use my smartphone to find my references. Please help. I'm from Botswana Africa
Sorry this took me so long to reply, I often use my phone, you can trace a grid onto the photo on most smart phones. You can do it, good luck!
