  • Which portable photo printer is better? The Fuji Instax or the Polaroid hi-Print? One of my most common questions for people who use my Wanderlust Passport is what portable photo printer should they get. I did a review in 2020 and I am here to update that review to see which is better, the Fuji Instax or the Polaroid hi-Print

    I guess my only comment is that even though it takes the Polaroid Hi Print takes longer you have to consider that the instax (which I am a super huge fan) take the same amount of time to create a print. The instax still has to take time for the print to show up because of the image process.... so the speed test is kind of a misnomer because the print emulsion is somewhat faster in comparison to instax because the image prints instantly it just takes 4 passes to complete the print... just a thought.

      But you can print a lot of photos, and let them sit and develop while you do other things. The polaroid printer really takes a while to spool and print up and you have to sort of baby sit that before you can get to printing the next one. While you are correct, for the wait time,Id rather wait for the picture to develop than print, but thats a personal preference.

  • @franzrogar
    @franzrogar Před rokem +22

    12:37 That is *NOT* ZINK paper. ZINK paper processing is ejected directly like the Polaroid instant film (right out of the printer). The process of CMYK is like professional photo printers do it: one color at a time, and it's exactly the same process KODAK/Canon/etc. printers do when you go to any shop to "reveal" your digital photos.

    • @vamps_vids
      @vamps_vids Před rokem

      searching for this comment. it is indeed not a zink, it is foil sublimation or something like that, this method is very durable... and a Zink don't even stand a spill of water.

    Thanks. I recently got the new Instax Wide, as I love the larger size print, which also means more detail. The Polaroid printer is a thermal printer, different from the Zink print. Canon has a thermal printer line which I've considered, the Canon Selphy, a portable one and a larger sorta-portable which produce large 6x4 prints. I've considered the larger one for home prints, the Selphy cp1300.

      So print quality doesn’t really degrade from what I’ve seen, mainly bc they are pasted in my journals so they stay well preserved. I will say the adhesive for the Polaroid is terrible. • @kfiroy
    @kfiroy Před 2 lety +8

    All along the review seems the final verdict is clear, which is fine - although to my opinion - having bigger pictures (all prints are small anyway), when there is no real difference on printing time (as on the Fugi it simply takes time for post printing until photo is finally revealed), where Amazon delivery is 2d time (I assume you are not basing this printer as mass-lab-production) .
    Regarding the waste, should not be a relevant parameter between the 2, as you stated "if you melted it all down, ,maybe it's the same" (so why bringing this factor up at the beginning?!).
    So all-in-all, from my point of view, printing quality wise and photo size wise - the Polaroid hi-print is a clear winner.

      @@bobo_design_studio Thanks! I can’t say I’ve noticed that so far. Yesterday I wasted 4 out of the pack because I was having trouble getting a photo to print so I assumed that maybe the pack was empty, so I took it out of the printer to put in a new pack and discovered that there had been 4 left in the old one! I had to bin it then because it had then been exposed to the air. I do find the printer good, but it’s a bit hit and miss whether it connects properly to my iPad or iPhone. It says ‘connected’ when I pair it but then won’t actually print the photo. Sometimes I think it might be to do with the printer itself and whether the correct light is showing on it. There are so many of them. Green, green flashing, purple etc. plus I can’t figure out when you know if it needs charging. Maybe I’m just getting old!

      @@katperson7332 Do you know which instax printer model you have? The older ones will pull photos from your camera roll only if they are downloaded to your phone from iCloud. If your phones are not locally on your camera roll and is being saved in iCloud to save storage on your phone, it’ll say that it can’t print it. The older printers connected to your phone by creating a Wi-Fi signal rather than Bluetooth. So the older printers tend to run into the problem that you were describing where it won’t print a photo if it’s in iCloud. I hope this helps. It’s a pain but for my uses with the passport. It was a far better quality photo for the job.

It looks exactly like the one in your video. I never use iCloud to store any photos. I just keep them on the phone or iPad, so the problems I have don’t seem to relate to that. I usually am able to print eventually but for some reason I have to jump through hoops before I get there! Next time I use it I will have a look to see if the app tells me how many pics are left in the pack of 10, but meanwhile I’ve decided to just write on a card how many I’ve used up and I keep the card in the printer box so I’ll know when I get to no 10. And the price can fluctuate which Im not sure is a result of supply chain or various vendors with varying pricing. Its also harder to find the polaroid film on the go. When I'm traveling, I can't always order refils online. The print quality is good, but I personally love the look of the instax, so it really depends on what your looking for. 14:05 Completely disagree with "cheaper" and "quality". On "cheaper": the original printer that Polaroid copies here (the KODAK Mini 2) costs $0.33 per shot, which is half of Instax. On "quality": it's cristal clear that the dynamic range is almost blown away in the Instax: the vest is black-flat and also the sky...

    • @liudaolunhui
      @liudaolunhui Před rokem

      Agreed... I just got Instax Link Wide yesterday, and printed out some photos. With "natural mode", the blue sky disappeared almost completely, while the darker colors are still very strong. With the "rich mode", the colors are visibly better, and more similar with the digital version, but still lighter than the digital version. The photos are not sharp, but "creamy" instead (not blurred). Regarding the price, it took about 1 euro per photo. I hesitated between Instax and Polaroid Hi Print, and eventually chose Instax. To me these two portable photo printers are designed for different needs. Somehow I would rather put Polaroid photos in an album than peeling it off and sticking it on my laptop. On the other hand, I use a magnet to fix Instax photo on my refrigerator. I can totally see myself travelling to other countries and coming back with magnet souvenirs with an Instax photo taken there for my refrigerator :D

      @@liudaolunhui Agreed, I'd prefer using the Instax IF... they would have been able to get their hands in the original formula which ended in soooooo much better quality photos. I know they have to re-invent the wheel (shame on the original company) but they're still decades away to be "good enough" to my eyes (which have a 140% of normal vision, meaning I notices each and every defect... which in turn puts me away from the current printing quality of Polaroid).
