The strongest literary voice of African women will be in Prague for the first time. For the readers but also for those looking to inspiring ideas about race, gender, current society, listening to Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is an unique occasion.
When she speaks, I listen keenly.
I am Ghanaian. Half of a yellow sun ☀ ☀ led me to research on the Biafran war and I glad I did. Thanks for writing it.
Inspite of my "love" for the writer and person of Ms Adichie, I will like for someone to explain to me how we got to the Biafran war.... How the coup de'tat that took out Northern/Hausa and western/yuroba leaders ... a coup led by and dominated by one side of the country.... I find addressing issues from one side very unfair... so lets hear it too
@@asaasare220 I would like to ask about the northern pogrom what does that mean, how many people were killed in the coup mentioned, were there coups afterwards? and who masterminded those coups..also how many people were killed during the Biafran war. I mean civilians...I am curious please.
@@onyinyeakachukwueze3058 how did the pogrom start....was it not the coup...? do U really think the northerners were not going to see the coup as anti northern and hence payback... what was the agreement prior to the coup.... kill their Saudarna and balewa and they sit on their hands and watch it go down... mind U I am speaking as someone who admired Nzoegwu and co and detest feudalism in nigeria ghana or anywhere... but as a human being you have to be careful what you start... all bets were off once the northerners interpreted things the way the deemed fit...every one has grievances nobody's grievance is "bigger"... this is for posterity sake..If right now the yuroba start killing notherners in lagos or vice versa if the northerners start killing yuroba do you really think it will go unanswered.... please tell me.... do not try to pretend we from the outside will not study this issue a bit...

U know why but intentionally want to gloss over that... point is the '66 coup was led by a group of people the other side reacted or over reacted but once you start shit you have absolutely no right to decided for the otherside how they should react...bottom line,
I am Brazilian and reading Half of the Yellow Sun helped me to understand more of that terrible conflict that I saw on tv when I was a child. She is a great writer and she has a innate elegance that is so beautiful to see.
The best way to deal with Trauma/ptds..ect.. (any trauma.... especially war trauma)is to tackle it face on...
Don't suppress it.. but talk about it over....

I am the mother of only boys and what I do for girls is to teach my sons to respect, love, nurture, support++++ women. I do teach them that girls as women contribute positively to society. Also that being a woman is not about wearing a dress, makeup or being feminine.
That's good, but both must be taught the same lessons or someone will get corrupted and confused by western societies pagan like cultures. That means pending one against each other so when you teach those family values, then it will likely fall apart. 💯✌🏽

1. Exile - distance gives you clarity.
2. Race - In Nigeria, where everyone is black, I didn't need to be black. But then I came to America, and suddenly I became black.
3. Unless you do "active thinking" about it, you can't access/see such things.

When I read the 'Things fall apart' novel by Chinua Achebe, an interest about Nigeria grew in me. When I read Chimamanda's books, my love and interest for Nigeria grew exponentially. Chimamanda is a gem. Thank you for your continued inspiration.

Absolutely....she's so Authentic which makes her so Unique and Interesting to here her Stories.
I would love for her voice to represent us... But if she speaks about African American issues, she should inform herself of the issues that have pleagued us...and it runs deeper than just the 1950's..
apologies... but she is well educated on the issues as much as any sympathetic "outsider" can be. Please do not make the mistake of thinking you and only you have the education when discussing issues that are related to you... God curse as all but I see a man like thomas sowell discussing nigeria.. the man hates even his own brethren in the USA yet he speaks of Nigeria... Chimamanda,who is on your side, cannot speak about your side.. she obviously may not be as passionate or may leave certain details out but you cannot insinuate she is not educated about them...

Sister African, beware these people are diving deep into the future of African through you. You represents the wisdom, knowledge and Voice of Africa. I suspect the Think Tanks are interested. It may enable them to module the Africa they want. We saw it in Nkrumah of Ghana and others.

True, she is a writer but in my opinion she is a keen observer of the American political landscape. I would add the word impartial because she was neither born nor raised here, nor is she deeply invested in political outcomes here.

If you are tired of watching this interview then you must be thinking she should be veiled up and covered without seeing what goes on around her. She's political cos everyone no matter your profession is born political. As a writer she is expected to know a bit of everythig just like a lawyer and journalists are expected to. So, if she speaks about politics and politicians in the US that means she is observant so have the right to speak her thoughts about what she is observed. Being a writer she can't run away from speaking her minds on topical issues affecting her environment.

Chimamanda Africans are not black but African in America. Black was American name for formerly enslaved then the move to African American and now Africans are black. What is that? Africa is African simple and we have many shades from chocolate to newly European invaders colours! So please re- define African on continent and America.

She is my new favorite author....but I felt she was not as articulate as she usually is ...she repeated certain words numerous times ( the word polarized ...eg)and this surprised me, generally, she has a plethora of words in her arsenal ...perhaps she was tired with jet lag . The backlash was not completely against obama, but more also against his policies. There have probably been a few more republican presidents than democratic presidents in the US. She is very right about "state rights" though.

Continental Africans can study apartheid in Rhodesia and South as a primer on understanding apartheid in the US. They can educate themselves before coming to the US so that relations and 'deer in the headlights' syndrome will be lessened when meeting Diasporan Africans.

Love you Chimamanda but what do you mean when you say that black people can’t get 3 ids? Very weird. I live in Canada, on a work permit and I have 3 ids. So definitely a citizen of America can get 3 ids.
Not to say that it’s impossible but it’s very uncommon.
True, but problems come in with definitions of "acceptable" ID. We get two IDs due to just being born here. One is a birth certificate and the other is a social security card. Nobody carries around a birth certificate which at one time was the ultimate. Too, most folks don't keep with their SS card, but we memorize the number though we might have to apply for a duplicate if someone wants to see the physical card. But guess what? There are no photos on them so they can only be used with other ID forms. Drivers' licenses were good, but now they are doing something with them that would preclude their use as an ID in general and voting in particular, so now we have to get this new form, called "the REAL ID". Procedures and costs vary by state (it's $60.00 in PA). Passports are accepted as ID without question, but currently, costs about $150.00 and has it's own ID requirements, and takes weeks for processing once you apply. I had a photo ID from work and at one time could use it as ID to fly but no more. Complicates life for the poor and others who for whatever reason aren't keeping with these things. My passport expires next year and I plan to be very intentional about renewing it, along with applying for a non-drivers' license.
So you see the complexities especially if you are talking about installing ID requirements for voting which supposedly is a "right".
have you heard where they'd ask folk to read chinese newspapers.... what she means is if a black person goes to get an id they will find a way to frustrate her and given the jobs we have who has the time to go get 3 ids... a drivers licence.. maybe you drink and have tickets so you cannot get one ... they find ways trust me... they do...

She as a human being can show up anywhere and say what she needs to say. Her being african and black does not disqualify her from speaking. She must speak because there needs to be diverse voices in all squares, only cowards remain quiet when they have something important to say.
