Only time I use a jig is when I need to make a hole bigger. Usually use a marking jig to set my marks then everything is drilled freehand. Once the pilot bit breaks through I follow that to get the hole. I’ve also found that buying carbide hole saws may be a bit more expensive but last much longer and have no problem with hard woods and works better on metal doors than bi-metal hole saws. Also my 1” bore bit is the Stanley power bore style bits, you can find the same type of bit for about 20.00 on Lee valley they’re called 1” Greenwood bit, worth their metal.
