I find it really funny that it's the color-blind painter who regurlarly creates the most vibrant paint schemes on youtube. 😀
That's just blue and orange. It's basic color theory we all learned in art class in high school. Nothing special about that.
@@PhthaloGreenskin maybe if you watched other vides of midwinter minis’…
It's not weird at all, colorblind people only see value and not hue in specific colors, so it's no wonder they gravitate towards high value contrast paint schemes. In fact, in some ways, colorblind people are better than non-colorblind people at distinguishing subtle shifts in saturation and brightness - I've heard of people specifically asking their colorblind relatives to judge if the paint colors match when painting walls because they can notice stuff that would be very hard to distinguish otherwise.
@@PhthaloGreenskin They said vibrant, not complex or unusual.
As a color blind person im always hesitant to mix colors, it can be tricky to tell whats what on your palette at times so i always paint straight out the bottle using the labels to guide me. (Another reason i don’t like citadel paints) leading to very saturated and contrasting minis if I don’t weather them down a lot
“Worry less, paint more” words to live by.
PREACH 🙌
Be in the room where it happened tho haha
We need more innovation like this in the mini painting community. Before watching this video, I would have laughed if someone told me to paint a tank with a speed paint, but now I think I might have to go try this on my rockgrinder…
We painted about 8 Ork vehicles at LVO last year with 1.0 Speedpaints using a very similar technique.
This makes for a really nice "winter white wash" style weathered armour, great work!
Definitely! Reminds me of the Arctic schemes from MechWarrior 4 ;)
@@MidwinterMinis I reckon you should paint up an Arctic scheme titan, another warlord shouldn't take too long right!?
Midwinter White Wash
I think the Russ came out lovely. looking forward to seeing them go at it on the table. My moneys on the Daemons.
Let's see what the Heavy Flamer has to say about that
But then out of no where Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka appears and annihilates the Humies and Demons
The planet will break before the guard will.
That zounds like sometin a zoggin' humie would say
I've mixed speedpaints with regular paints to make a pseudo oil paint. It dries much faster than oil (i.e. the acrylic bit) but I can blend smoothly like an oil paint. It looks nice.
Interesting! I'll have to give that a try.
@@MidwinterMinis to be fair, I also used to use typhus corrosion as a pseudo oil paint. Brush it on thick, then immediately use your thumb (very important) to wipe it off
@@TheSonOfRyan can you use other fingers too
@@abefaerber7994 you can but god won't forgive you
always the sign of a great hobbyist to use garbage materials like Army Painter paints and use them to make something great.
"Worry less, paint more." That's pretty much the attitude that has let me paint probably more in the past couple of years than I had in my almost twenty years in the hobby combined. Well, that and Contrast and Speedpaints.
Between the clever paintjob and the advice this might be my favorite video on the channel now
Personally really love the blotchy look the paint gives out, it really makes it look more raggedy and not really well-maintained or like you said a westhered look to it or can even pass off as a form of camouflage.
"or can even pass off as a form of camouflage"
I was just thinking the same thing watching this. It very much looks like a 2 tone blue and grey camouflage pattern. I wonder what would happen if you, for example, painted something tan and applied green this way? Might look pretty sweet.
@@ColonelSandersLite Ngl would like to see Midwinter Minis test something like that.
Also yeah you're def right on the the type of camouflage it could pass of as!
I can’t tell you how helpful this was I just started a guard army and was super worried about how to make my Leman Russ’s not look bland. Love your videos!
This is amazing. I like the orange on some of the panels and guns. It strikes well against the weathered and darker look of the tank.
Love it!
Dan from Akai is legendary in the synth world, never thought he would get a mention on this channel.
That has a nice been-painted-a-hundred-times industrial machine look to it. It also looks like it would be a great base for painting marble or other stones, the transparency of the layers means you could sponge/stipple some metallic paint lightly between coats of speedpaint to get that glittery look of real stone. Drift into different contrast tones to make different types of stone... see, this is why this channel is great, it gets you thinking about the painting possibilities.
This honestly looks like a great way to make simple camo patters, definitely trying something similar!
Looks fantastic. I really like the patterning you've achieved.
Thank you , Guy .
🐺
When life gives you reactivating paint, you make a paint job out of it))
Dood, I love this idea!!! It’s such a great miniature application of what you did on your warlord patina!!! I love it!!! You’re such a creative, brilliant, accessible painter. Hope you give yourself a pat on the back for your amazing videos and attitude towards this hobby. Love ya 💜💜
Thanks Guy. You're just lovely to listen to.
Loved the video, loved the "excursus" into music! Thanks for the products you put out!
Oh wow the old footage of you is a real throw back - you've come such a long way since then man. Wishing you and your family all the best and, as always, lots of love from germany mate.
Please do more with this technique. I could see it being your "thing".
Opacity through white paint
Something I’d never thought I would hear
Legitimately love my timbre wolf - cool to see a little crossover in these worlds
This looks amazing. Love the work you do
Such a lovely video and the results of the painting are amazing! You always have something great to show and to teach in all your videos!!
This is great. Love the effect ❤ Thanks for sharing.
the outro music makes me feel like iam in peace with the world. thanks for that one
Awesome, can't wait to see this in the deathwatch series!
I was sceptical about the thumbnail, but the orange details really pop! Really cool technique, I'll have to try it myself.
Great Technique... love it.
Thank you! Cheers!
Very useful content!
Thank you for sharing with us. And the results are awesome! 😍
I honestly love the original line of speedpaints, they have problems, but they are really good for what they do
This looks incredible!
That Leman Russ looks awesome!
I LOVE this video! So many interesting new ways to use Speed Paint! And those effects are GORGEOUS. I’m definitely going to play around with these techniques.
Jeez, the expression on that synth demo guy's face was like he sensed a parade of dizzy clowns with IBS was marching on his future grave.
Great video and ideas as always. Thanks
I quite appreciate your mixing of paints and skills. I trait enjoy when you integrate your audio expertise and experence as well!
Love it 👍
that looks awesome! i love the faux chipped paint
Amazing work as always!
This looks amazing!!
I love your analogy with the synth
Very cool. Awesome job
Very cool. And it’s great to see inspiration for using paints someone might be otherwise too irritated with to want to pull off the shelf. I don’t like Speedpaint 1.0 for their intended purpose, but since here they are on my rack, I’ve found other interesting uses for them such as on diorama terrain pieces for a weathered wood/paint effect on old buildings, exposed garden benches, etc. Also not too shabby for making tiny wood “books” look like they’re leather bound.
very cool effect! kind of looks like galvanised steel. i love the penal legion idea too.
Another classic MWM video! Ilove it
Love that tank!
Nice! I would never have thought to sponge the armour panels to get that effect. Turned out great!
Cool as always.
Brilliant Job Dude.
Absolutely amazing vid I always thought speed paint might have their uses but could not see my self buying some . Now you have convinced me they might have a use in my paint arsenal. Everything has it use in the right place it just another tool at the end of the day . Love your work
Paint is not a religion, it’s a tool ❤
This has turned out fantastic. The colour scheme really matches the designs and unit theme. Looking forward to the battles. Keep up the good work.
One of your best paint jobs to date mate!
This is awesome
Looks good.
I love a bit of RobWords in the background while I paint as well!
Great eye!
great job guy!... just remembering a year or two ago when you said you wouldn't touch contrast paints. my bets on guard
If you want to feel old, that video is almost 4 years old ;)
@@MidwinterMinis noooooo I'm too young to feel old. Lol
This is a really neat video :) Thanks Guy
That's the chill Midwinter Minis experience we all are looking for. Loved the video, thank you. :)
I’m so exited, even though it’s just for the start collecting death match, I’m so happy to see two vids in a row about my favorite faction
Now i know how to paint my GW Kill Team Terrain, Thank you Guy!
Thats a really nice scheme for tanks and other vehicles.
Very happy to have the tips in this video and the comments because I've been unhappy with my Army Painter speed paints overall but still want to make use of them
Guess it's going into the "product I will use for some unique effects but not recommend to others" category, which is sad cause i like Army Painter
I might make kind of blood wash with the red for my Daemon Prince? Idk. My friends also swear by giving Daemon Skin a purple wash so I'll try that
We like you too, and it’s always our goal to make our fellow gamers and hobbyists happy. We aim to please but we aren’t always expert marksman. But I promise we always try.
I never thought I'd see a Guard unit painted heavily with blaze orange but you make it look absolutely amazing
I still love that outro music. Oh, cool paint job too👍
I'm just here for that phat outro beat.
Seriously though awesome job! Your videos are one of the reasons I decided to take the plunge into the hobby side of Warhammer. Before last year I hadn't built a model in over 30 years!
Guy I painted up my own 'great gargant ' which is heavily inspired from yours.
Thank you for the inspiration to be a bit more creative and just get on and paint.
Love your videos, keep up your amazing work
great video. just wished it would have came out a week ago when i painted my own Leman russ. wanted to give it a old Rusty look and this seems like a great way to combine a weathered look to it before adding rust effects.
Speedpaintchop?
I love you Guy :)
This battle report is going to pop off!
really interesting grey colour- like galvanised steel!
Guy this could just be a doppleganger, but if the person at 8:36 is you, I think it is amazing how much weight you have lost! As a not exactly small guy who likes warhammer, that has really inspired me to start working out again, and to start mini painting after a long highatus. Have a great day and thank you so much for everything you do ❤️
You actually did it, you absolute mad lad!
Tried a similar method with an olive green contrast paint with a Deathguard vehicle, sponging it on and deliberately not letting it dry between diluted coats and got a similar effect. Worked a treat, gave it a really grungy look, perfect for those Nurgle types. Thanks for posting this video Guy. Will have to go out and try it with the Army Painter range.
I got an ad for the exact speed paint set. For once CZcams's ad algorithm actually makes sense
Cool guide!
Guard will win... easily
“Late 70s Brooklyn pimp” making me decide on if my next army should be guard
Living in Guildford it was weird to see Andertons mentioned here. I always thought they were nothing big, just some non-franchise shop that got lucky. Didn't realise they were even known outside Guildford.
Sure, it's a nice feature for blending paints, but I wonder why Army Painter updated their whole speedpaint range to 2.0 when the whole reactivation issue still remains. This and the separation issues of their warpaints is why I stay away from all their paint products, speed and warpaints, despite their extreme efforts of saying it's perfectly normal, just varnish between every layer or shake them until your arm falls off/buy a vortex mixer. It's a faulty, low quality product which would explain why they are cheaper. But if you buy cheap, you buy twice.
Yeah, it’s good that there’s an affordable option and all that but individual paint pots aren’t particularly pricey and i’d rather buy something that works more reliably like vallejos or citadel
It does not remain, but, we have worked the paints to have a workable window (approximately 2hrs depending on environment) for two reasons: 1: a harder cure, which our customers asked for. 2: because if we were to remove the workable nature of the paints completely, the paint wouldn’t be what it was designed to be: a smooth, stainless, evenly saturated paint throughout the range which we believe are assets to the range.
@@queencyrys6309 Vallejo exists and is pretty cheap, army painter is if you want a lot of bad paint for 100 dollars
@@TheArmyPainter that’s cap and yall know it, most people who haven’t been paid by y’all say it takes up to a day to actually dry
@@TheArmyPainter So you can guarantee me that if I use your speedpaints the proper way, wait 4h or min. 2h and then go over it with a highlight colour, they don't reactivate ?
Man I'm digging that weathering technique! I've been experimenting more with washes and contrasts to make minis look old, dirty, and weathered. I don't have a tank, but I have a kitbashed core driller I built for Stargrave and a giant ass robot to use in This Is Not A Test and The Doomed that I think I'll take a shot at weathering with this technique. I have to say, I've always liked your speed paint videos and seeing all the little hacks you come up with for basing, etc.
“Worry less. Paint more.” Ughhh, I didn’t come to this video for earth shaking pearls of wisdom like this one. Geeez, Guy. Get it together. 😂😂 Thanks for a great video!
Worry less, paint more! Yeeah boooi!
Worry less paint more I love it!
Fantastic. Wonderful video thanks for sharing It got a bit Alex Ball at the end there. I loved it.
I've been trying to paint my russ for 3 years, this is going to be useful
Really interesting method and a stunning result! It does make me wonder how one could repair mistakes using this method. The whole process seems based on the painters ability to never make any mistakes with the other paints, but that simply isn't the case for so any people who paint....
Is it a flaw or is it a feature? YES!!!
You should make the ad mech and tau both have glow in the dark paint
I new it was midwinter minis just from thumbnail
Iconic thumbnails
Personally I love using the Army Painter Speedpaints, the washed out looks some of the colors have are perfect for my Tyranids, which have vibrant orange carapaces, grey skin and green weapons/claws/horns.
I've been utilising the reactivation properties of speedpaint on the chaos knights I'm building. I'm almost using them like watercolours.
Can you make motivational poster/wallpaper with Midwinter Minis colors saying - 'Worry less - Paint more' - I would use it as my wallpaper for sure!!!
Not a big guard fan, but I do like tanks and even though I’ll probs never paint a russ I really enjoyed this, like I do all your videos, I especially enjoyed your wrap up on this one, on a grey day you made me smile, thanks Guy.
The original dark blue and white makes a really nice camouflage.
I did what You advised "Worry less... paint more" So I sold all my AP range and bought Vallejo which does the same but better :D
That's a great looking paint scheme. I might have to try it on some Battletech Mechs. Cheers.
The tank turned out great, and there is no problem seeing that it belongs to the same unit as your infantry.
