    I like Army Painter speed paint the most, HOWEVER, for this kind of comparison, I’d have preferred the same model be painted. Then again, while I use speed paints, I don’t like slap the chop method. Even the top tier painters seem to have an obviously grey undertone rather than a darker color.

    Trying my hand at painting again last night (havent painted a figure in 15 years)
    Spray primer with Citadel Black. Then thought to use SpeedPaint GraveLord Grey and Blinding White to try slapchop.
    Found the grey to be almost black and no discernible effect.
    So used the white for the drybrushing. Its more like a pale grey on the models (and my fingers)
    The models look mostly OK (a few got too much or too little paint)
    But Im going to buy AK paints bright white to add some white drybrushing before adding speedpaints and/or contrast paints.
    might try a different size drybrush when I start another batch.

    I started with speed paints, saw your video where you started using dipping inks, which made me look into em, because i really wasn´t fan of speed paints "skin" options. Because i looking for a good skin whenever i finally dare paint some Kingdom death:monster minis.
    Ordered the big dipping ink box, and no regret at all. Nude skin, fits skin tone i want far better, black and white are better then speed paints overall. Then same time Blue glacier has given me one my favorit light blue paints, the cape i put it on, looked so good!
    So i am fan of using both.
    Though, i got 1 problem with dipping inks(Problem a lot paints have). Fact that Army painter now puts actually colour names on, on top of the fantasy name, just make it easier to pick right colour to me. But this is a thing that should become a standard with minis paint lines, but to be fair also something army painter first started doing with 2.0 line of speed paints and now fanatic.
    Also Greenstuffworld being spain and army painter being Denmark, means easy access to both own shops!(being from Denmark myself)

    You've become my guilty pleasure! I paint ok but for wargaming I want a quick table top result. I've tried slap chop and love it. But I've experimented from other techniques and found an even quicker way using speed/contrast paints that give a the same result but with less effort.
    I spray an undercoat of white and then wash the model with Allys brown liquid (loads of vids on this wash) which is 2 parts agrax wash, 2 parts serphion sepia and 1 part lamian media. I make whole empty paint pot worth of this mix so not mixing it for each paint session. Once dry I then use speed/contrast/inks to paint my minis, starting with the darkest colours first, and then using lighter colours which require less accuracy as the lighter paint doesn't affect the dark paint already applied.
    I paint a unit of 10 German Grenadiers in about 4 hours including drying time and they look great.

    Thank you for sharing this! If you did it because I requested it, double thanks! Overall, in this experiment, I like the Army Painter. The unic Grey blue jeans are definitely the color I like for my own blue jeans, but you can get them in a variety of colors, so all paints are passable. I dislike the dipping ink orange petty much for the same reason you like it -- different strokes for different folks! I assume the reason that dipping ink orange went on thinly is lower pigmentation, compared to the other two orange paints. If that is what you like, couldn't you also achieve the same affect by diluting the Speedpaint or Citadel oranges with medium? I guess that takes work; so does adding another layer if you want more pigment, so again, different strokes. I don't think it is a universal truth that the dipping inks are low in pigment though. That green went on beautifully!

Unfortunately, I only game with 28mm figures, often true 25's, down to 18mm figures. The smaller figures are much more challenging to work on, due to their smaller details. Still, a very useful, helpful video. Cheers!

So if Im using my enamels ill stick with using the Testors, only because you cant mix acrylic water base with Testors oil base enamel paint. I’m in a similar boat with Contrast, have a lot of them but haven’t used them much yet. Which makes it painful seeing videos where I feel like the AP SpeedPaint just looks better, but it’s hard to justify buying another range of similar paints unless I go on a massive painting frenzy in the near future. (Which I might… I have plenty of unassembled minis just waiting for some paint, and “slap chop” is a good way to feel like I can get them tabletop quality without feeling like a chore.)

    • @iantellam9970
      @iantellam9970 Před měsícem

      Just buy a bottle of speedpaint medium and thin your contrast paints with them when you paint and they'll behave more like speedpaints.
      I use both ranges. Speedpaints take longer to dry and have an oilier feel, they're slightly less prone to coffee staining. But it's all about the medium really, so if you cut one with the other you'll get some of the benefits. And in my experience all contrast/speedpaints work best thinned with some medium.

    I would be interested in buying your paints. Will you be putting them I your ebay page?

    • @MiniatureHobbyist
      @MiniatureHobbyist  Před měsícem +1

      Yeah but would probably rather sell them as complete sets rather than individuals, I will try and get on that later next week 🙂

      @@MiniatureHobbyist Understood. My funds are a bit limited so I might not be able to afford to buy them as a job lot, but from your perspective this makes the most sense.

    GSW Dipping Ink: Dusty Blue is a great colour for denim.
    In case anyone watching wonders which paint he meant in the video, since it was never stated.
    Much more suitable to the green shark skin dipping ink.

      @MiniatureHobbyist  Před měsícem

      Yup thats the one I looked at after I did the video and thought it would make a much better denim look 🙂

    Random question: whenever I've seen slapchop on other channels, they use a grey paint before a white. Is there a particular reason why you don't?

    • @dextersamson8286
      @dextersamson8286 Před měsícem

      It's pointless that's why

    • @kendonfahr8337
      @kendonfahr8337 Před měsícem

      @@dextersamson8286, if you dry brush grey over most of the model, and use white only on the most prominent points, it gives greater depth. Looks quite good.

    • @MiniatureHobbyist
      @MiniatureHobbyist  Před měsícem +1

      I used to drybrush with grey and then white then one day I just went straight to white and cant see I notice any difference so I just skip that step to save a little bit more time 🙂

    You don't like mixing paint ranges?! Crazy. Might want to to work on getting over that. Can only see it making your content stronger. Would make for a neat follow up video where you take your favorites from an experiment like this and see if combined they look best. Enjoyed the video none the less.

    Could have done it without telling US the viewer which range you used and the asked which we thought was the best without knowing. Future video? Also printed 3 sets and done the same figure? What size are they? They look much bigger than say AoS

    I really wish people would get away from the SL technique and learn how to properly zenthial.
    SL leaves such a sandy end result that comes off very amatuerish, its expecially worse when you see a good painter use it, because you know its only holding them back.

    I'm gonna br biased as hell but I can't with speed paints... They are defective and with reactivation issues.
    I did the mistake of buying the mega set box back in time.
    Please don't. They're defective and they have reactivation issues.
    Just the humidity in the air or your hand will reactivate them and ruin the mini

    just scratching my head over here. i guess you consider yourself a mini painter. you like the watery one, which is fine. but hey, did you know you can thin the others too? i tested these dipping inks, they are just pisswasser
