  • As a reminder - The outside 5th is the same for both Major & Minor
Major Middle note (Major 3rd) is 2 Whole Steps From the Root
Minor Middle note (Minor 3rd) is 1 1/2 whole steps from the Root
We need to memorize our fundamental chords we use all the time so we can find them without hesitation. It may take some practice and time but it's worth it! Make sure to practice these on their own so you don't trip up over finding these positions when you're learning actual music.

I took piano lessons when I was 7 years old. We didn’t have a piano at home for me to practice on. My grandma had a piano and I’d go practice on weekends. My grandma played piano by ear and I watched her. Well when I went for my lessons I would try playing my lesson by ear! My teacher told me if I didn’t stop trying to play by ear I would never learn to play! I didn’t know what cords were, didn’t get that far. I just learned what the notes were on the piano. I proved her wrong! If I lesson to a song enough and can remember the tune and can set down and play it in the key of C. I’m learning more here from this guy than I did from her! It’s good to know the three cords to start with. I’m 82 yrs old now and still learning! Great site here.

You are absolutely right. I started learning the violin at the age of 7, according to the music not by ear, and even the four strings of the violin were never in tune. I make noise every day and annoy my neighbours. After my last music class four years later, I still don't know any basic music knowledge, I just pull the strings in the correct position according to the sheet music. And the violin became the most painful memory in my life. I'm 61 now and want to start learning the keyboard, hopefully I can keep playing at your age. I wish you health, happiness and longevity

Best tutorial ever on chords... I took lessoNs for 2 years as a child, played fur Elise and the first movement of moonlight sonata at the recitals but only ever knew how to read the treble clef. I watched my teacher play the songs and copied her until I memorized them. Never learned a chord or scale...now I'm 43 and I only can play those few songs I memorized as a child. I want to learn the right way so that I can play anything I want with or without sheetmuzic. I've watched a few videos and yours is the only one that made chords so easy to understand!!

I made flash cards in high school of every chord type including altered chords. I'd have one pile of each chord and shuffle those and turn them over and play them instantly. I'd have another pile of cards of ALL of the possible chords (There are hundreds) mixed up and would do the same, turn them over and play them without pause. Then when I saw chord charts I had internalized every possible chord combination through my own flash chord training.

But I feel I've been stuck at the same level for years and years. People who aren't musicians hear me play and think I'm good but I know how much better I could be. My piano teacher who taught me chords taught me this building all major chords with the pattern of starting at the root note, then moving 4 half steps to the next note, then 3 half steps to the last note of the chord. He taught the minor as root, then 3 half steps, then 4 half steps. This works out to be exactly what you taught. He also showed me the pattern for building 6ths, 7ths, augmented, diminished, etc. As he added more chord types, I would have me practice them in songs. He was a jazz pianist and was awesome. I wish I would have had him as my teacher for longer. I still have my list of how to build the chords 35 years later!

What I done when I learned the guitar was play all the chords in sequence ie ABCD major over and over then minor Am Bm Cm etc.
With 1 strum and then strum patterns ( even though they didn’t go together) then with barre chords! It worked well, I’m going to apply a similar method to the piano. I just bought a piano 😬
    Thanks

Now i get it. Learning music theory would be beneficial but i just cannot seem to get myself to do it.

Nice job. I learned piano way before CZcams so I never had anyone show this method. In saying that, I was always visual and muscle memory (the fingers naturally felt the distance; like your major 5th example). It was interesting to watch you walk through what I had been doing for years, all the while wondering is this how other people do it. ;)

Timestamp 8:42 is what finally did it for me. After spending a lot of time on other channel's videos and websites without them helping at all (like learning all the "oreo" chords [black white black] or the "hamburgers" [white black white], etc.), once I did the practicing suggested in this video, it instantly clicked. And I mean instant. Suddenly I could play all the major keys without really thinking about it. In my next piano lesson, my teacher said "D major" and I immediately found the chord, whereas before it was such a struggle. Thank you!
