I just have to say it, Halo Infinite has the best grunt dialogue in the entire Halo franchise, it's a 10/10 even for all of the other species to but the grunts are perfect

Long story short, the Grunts were forcibly inducted into the Covenant through war and intimidation, which didn’t really endear the Covenant to them. They hated being treated like cannon fodder and being forced to continuously breed and give birth to more Grunts just so the Prophets could have more disposable labor without any care for them aside for their uses. They eventually rebelled and started a civil war to try and force the Prophets to hear them and treat them with more respect. The Prophets were very understanding of the Grunts’ plight, and respectfully ordered an Arbiter to crush the Grunts underfoot while also televising a friendly livestream of Covenant vessels glassing and annihilating the Grunt home world. TL;DR: The Grunts stood down afterwards. So yeah. Lots of tragedy behind the Grunts. At least they’re treated with more respect in the ranks of the Banished. Not much, but still better than the Covenant.

The Covenant treated them as little more than slaves at first then after the grunt rebellion, they were given the "honor" of dying for the Great Journey and were armed. Part of what convinced them to take this deal was an Arbiter partially glassing their homeworld and making sure it was broadcast to High Charity. After the Covenant War, they get pressed into service by different powers like the Banished. balaho, the grunt Homeworld being somewhat intact, very quickly took Cortana's deal when the Created arose. Now with her gone, they're likely to get pushed into service again.

Honestly, I would blow up every last one of the Banished’s propaganda towers, but because the Unggoy (Grunt for those who dont read the lore) who reads the propaganda is just so humorous to me, I’ve decided to leave _exactly_ one propaganda tower still intact (the one near FOB Charlie) just so that I can listen to the latest news from the Banished propaganda industry. I’ve heard the little guy claim dead Brutes have been promoted, Escharum was 4 Grunts in a Brute costume; I’ve heard the guy talking about wanting to go home, insulting the Banished, I’ve even heard him just start bawling over the radio. I would honestly love to see that little guy defect from the Banished and start working with the UNSC on Zeta Halo. He would make an excellent comms officer, and could even be a morale booster. Of all the human things in the campaign, although we never see his face, although he’s an alien, that grunt is one of the most human things in the game.

So, clearly, we need a 'Grunt Mercy' Skull that allows Grunts to ally with us if we neutralize all stronger units nearby and/or spare them after they go into retreat mode. Then we need a DLC where we free the Grunts who are being mistreated (some will want to stay, I'm sure).
Would be interesting if they included campaign bonuses for things like that. If you never destroy that tower. The grunt gives you Subtle hints in the propaganda broadcasts on the remaining missions.

Ya know, it would be interesting if they did a mission that had a few grunts that were defecting from the Banished and they wanted out so they sent out a message to chief and it would be a like a whole story that kinda tells their side of the story and how they felt about the entire war and all. Just a thought, I think it would be quite interesting. Sure ya got audio logs but a little story about the grunts and how they felt would be nice.
