While the show is traditionally viewed as a comedy, many episodes had a more serious tone. Early seasons aired on network prime time while the Vietnam War was still going on; the show was forced to walk the fine line of commenting on that war while at the same time not seeming to protest against it. For this reason, the show's discourse, under the cover of comedy, often questioned, mocked, and grappled with America's role in the Cold War.
As the series progressed, it made a significant shift from being primarily a comedy with dramatic undertones to a drama with comedic undertones. This was a result of changes in writing and production staff, rather than the cast defections of McLean Stevenson, Larry Linville, Wayne Rogers and Gary Burghoff. Series co-creator and comedy writer Larry Gelbart departed after Season 4, the first featuring Mike Farrell and Harry Morgan. This resulted in Farrell and Morgan having only a single season reading scripts featuring Gelbart's comic timing, which defined the feel and rhythm of Seasons 1-4 featuring predecessors Rogers and Stevenson, respectively. Larry Linville (the show's comic foil) and Executive Producer Gene Reynolds both departed at the conclusion of Season 5 in 1977, resulting in M*A*S*H being fully stripped of its original comedic foundation by the beginning of Season 6 - the debut of the Charles Winchester era.
Series creators Larry Gelbart and Gene Reynolds wanted M*A*S*H broadcast without a laugh track. Though CBS initially rejected the idea, a compromise was reached that allowed for omitting the laughter during operating room scenes if desired. "We told the network that under no circumstances would we ever can laughter during an OR scene when the doctors were working," said Gelbart in 1998. "It's hard to imagine that 300 people were in there laughing at somebody's guts being sewn up."
Seasons 1-5 utilized a more invasive laugh track; a more subdued audience was employed for Seasons 6-11 when the series shifted from sitcom to comedy-drama with the departure of Gelbart and Reynolds. Several episodes ("O.R.", "The Bus", "Quo Vadis, Captain Chandler?", "The Interview", "Point of View", and "Dreams" among them) omitted the laugh track altogether; as did almost all of Season 11, including the 135-minute series finale, "Goodbye, Farewell and Amen". The laugh track is also omitted from some international and syndicated airings of the show; on one occasion during an airing on BBC2, the laugh track was accidentally left on, and viewers expressed their displeasure, an apology from the network for the "technical difficulty" was later released, as during its original run on BBC2 in the UK, it was shown without the laugh track. UK DVD critics speak poorly of the laugh track, stating "canned laughter is intrusive at the best of times, but with a programme like M*A*S*H, it's downright unbearable."
On all released DVDs, both in Region 1 (including the US and Canada) and Region 2 (Europe, including the UK), an option is given to watch the show with or without the laugh track.
"They're a lie," said Gelbart in a 1992 interview. "You're telling an engineer when to push a button to produce a laugh from people who don't exist. It's just so dishonest. The biggest shows when we were on the air were All in the Family and The Mary Tyler Moore Show both of which were taped before a live studio audience where laughter made sense," continued Gelbart. "But our show was a film show - supposedly shot in the middle of Korea. So the question I always asked the network was, 'Who are these laughing people? Where did they come from?'" Gelbart persuaded CBS to test the show in private screenings with and without the laugh track. The results showed no measurable difference in the audience's enjoyment. "So you know what they said?" Gelbart said. "'Since there's no difference, let's leave it alone!' The people who defend laugh tracks have no sense of humor."[15] Gelbart summed up the situation by saying, "I always thought it cheapened the show. The network got their way. I was a little kid when this show first aired and I watched every episode until the finale in 1983, when I was 16. I’ve never seen any bloopers for MASH, so this was a real treat. Thanks for sharing!

I love Mash. It's the only TV series that I watch the re-runs over and over and over! Best TV series of all time. Well produced, and directed, and the chemistry was so wonderful among all the actors.
This show is older than I am. But it's one of my favorite shows. And I love how half the bloopers are just "shit" 🤣
I don't know what's funnier, Alan going off in Italian which I totally understood, or rhe notion of actually hearng Radar say shit lol
In my view not only one of the best shows ever made,but one of the most influential with consistent quality on all depts(actors,writing,subject matter,etc)from beginning to the last episode!

No wonder the show was so good and ran for so long. They all worked and got along like a dovetail.
It was on for 11 seasons. Also on for 11 seasons were The Jeffersons, Make Room for Daddy, Cheers, Frasier, Murphy Brown (counting the remake), Married with Children and Happy Days. Do you like them as much because they "ran for so long"? Also there have been reports that not everyone was sorry when Gary Burghoff left.
@@erichwise9936 One bad apple (G. Burghoff) doesn't spoil the whole bunch, and yes, I enjoyed those others shows just as much; particularly Fraiser, and he was drunk on the Set a lot of the time--go figure.
Mash is always worth watching.
The Henry Blake/Trapper-John era is my favorite. The show had a bit more edge, but the Potter/Honeycutt era was also fantastic TV.

Growing up this show was a staple in our house for more reasons than one. You see my dad fought in the Korean War and was twice a patient at a M*A*S*H, the second time my dad was wounded he had a hand grenade go off by his right foot they were getting ready to amputate my dads foot when a new surgeon at the unit said he could save it. They literally wired my dads foot back together. To the day he passed away in 95 he couldn't bend his toes.

Col Potter's wife's name, however, was ALWAYS Mildred.
All great tv but I imo the first season with BJ before he grew the moustache the best writing. Love every minute of it.

Ive been an actor it so hard at rehearsals to not laugh or mess up in 7th Grade I had the lead Role in my Class play we did it with kids from An Elementary School came and watched at the Junior High I Went to. The play was done in the Cafeteria because thats where the Stage was, When it came to do the Final scene I had to say OUT WITTED BY LEPERCHAUNS I THOUGHT I COVERED EVERY ANGLE, I couldnt stop laughing at myself when we were Practicing but some how during the show I somehow made it thru with out laughing, I love Stage life

One of my uncles who grew up with this works with the Air Force and he would always call me Hawkeye. And since I grew up with it too 20 years after it came out I suppose some of the mannerisms rubbed off on me.

People thought I was an idiot for buying seasons at 4.99 each at walmart several years ago.
Now you can't find it anywhere unless it's the 80 dollar boxed set and that's hard to find.
What's funny is you see 3 people in the scene and 20 people are laughing in the background.
