As a former appliance repairman I can tell you I have worked on some of these 1950s refrigerators in the 1990s, early 2000s. They were still rocking along. I only replaced things like door gaskets or shelf brackets.
The original compressors were still running 40 to 50 years later. They wouldn't quit!
I remember one in particular, it was a Ford Philco refrigerator. Yes, the Ford motor company made refrigerators at one time.
It's called survivor bias. There will be some modern day appliances still working 50 years from now.
@@jankoodziej877anyone who has ever owned both modern and vintage appliances knows modern ones are built incredibly poorly.
Wow, I'd pay $5k for a new 1956 refrigerator
Weren't the 50's fridge destroying the atmosphere or something? That's what I think I heard
@@jankoodziej877 No, no there won’t be modern appliances, made in 2024, still running in 2074. The motherboards that run them won’t be available. The appliances that were made in the 1950s and 60s were all mechanical, and robust. They were also power hogs, dirt and grime wasn’t an issue, they had the overbuilt HP to keep chugging, and overheating didn’t affect delicate electronic circuits. Appliances now have to be so energy efficient, they run on the hairy edge of failure as soon as they’re unboxed.
Yeah... I don't need a damn screen with internet on my fridge door... I need something like this...

That particular Refrigerator was way ahead of its time. Old is gold. She gave such a detailed advertisement of that fridge.
Even ahead of todays time.
No bullshit, no drama, just pure product explanation
Everybody is talking about how great the fridge is, but I haven’t seen anybody mention how great the ad itself is. It explains all the function of the fridge in a straightforward and honest way without some skit or joke or dumb shit to hook you. It just tells you what the product is and relies on the quality and practicality to speak for itself. I wish more ads followed this philosophy.
Back when advertisements treated their customer base with the respect they deserve and appealed to logic rather than emotion or psychological gimmicks.
Definitely feel like I would have enjoyed that era
I was just thinking about that. Like for a fridge ad, it was more like a lesson then and a commercial.
I bet this gal could cook as well
That's a nice observation. I too have thought of this, as the ad doesn't really have anything else other than what she intends to sell. It's remarkable, and it's a wonder how actually good ads evolved into our crappy commercials.
Someone please bring this back so we can have fridges that make some sense. I really liked the pull out shelves.

And the organization, lack of sufficient storage for a Family is astounding 🤪
@@GodsSparrowSpeaks That is so true.
That's because this was most likely made in the U.S. we don't make things as much here anymore so the quality goes down.
Woah it's more advanced than today's fridges
Yes 😊
This has more features than today's refrigerator ❤
''They don't make 'em like they used to'' couldn't be more fitting here. Whoever came up with the functions and storage ideas was an absolute genius.
They figured out that they could make more money if the fridge failed within 5years, it forces you to keep buying a new 1. It's a business model all industry if not all manufactures use, hence cheap Chinese crap. Now apply this with Big Pharma why cure cancer? Makes far more sense just to manage cancer then to actually cure it.
Even the furniture was ( actually is) higher quality than the wood chip crap being made today. To match what was considered the "cheap stuff" back then, today's furniture has to be "custom made ".
Yup! There are various types of inflation - one is to raise prices; two is to shrink the quantity of the contents in a package; another is to decrease the quality of things. Sometimes those inflationary practices occur all at once.
the secret is they realised having a genius work to specifically make your product as cheap as shitty as possible makes them more money and now they've gotten really good at that
So true and so sad. Women just aren't as good as they used to be.
How did fridges not get better when a masterpiece was made right away
They peaked early. How do you top a masterpiece?
Laziness, incompetence and greed
They finally realized people weren't buying new refrigerators because the ones they sold were so well made. More quality appliances = less revenue. Humans have a greed problem so we couldn't accept that.
You'll find that true of more than refrigerators of yesteryear if you do a little bit of research
Cheaper production costs. We need to support local artisans to counter this.
An actual amazing fridge
The reason they got worse is cuz they had to make the fridges and magnetic cuz children were dying being trapped inside the fridge. The magnetism sadly made the fridges expensive and bland.
Her voice is just amazing ❤
I want that refrigerator right now. It's 100 times better than what we have nowadays.
Love and prayers from Europe. ❤
These old fridges had a better design than today's fridges. Love the slide-out shelves and the ice cube releaser!
Indeed, they seem so ingenious.
And the fruit/vegetable compartment.
Most had egg cradles in the door because it was still common to keep a couple chickens for eggs.
Modern fridges eliminated them.
Those wire shelves would wear and rust or corrode. The modern glass shelves wont rust and are prettier. Wire shelves were better for air circulation but new refrigerators have fans to circulate air.
Does anyone remember HAVING TO DEFROST those old freezers before they invented auto defrost for modern ones? I do! What a mess. It was an all day project.
That vegetable suitcase is ridiculous. It looks heavy to lug back and forth to the sink and I don't believe it snaps in so easily in the door.

C) Literally worse in some aspect than other that are older
D) Some or all of the above

That's...60 years. Fridge working for 6 decades. When my mother told me, I was speechless.
My grandmother and father both have old kitchen appliances that still work fine. We built a home and I got new LG appliances for my kitchen. Within a year 2 out of 4 needed repair because of faulty electrical parts. They are nice to look at but are cheaply made. Same with tvs. My grandmother still has a functioning box tv and we have been through at least 7 flat screens in the last 20 years. I think they are built to fail.
My parents had an old electric stove that they had for about 30 years. Still worked, but they wanted a new one. The new one had multiple failures over the next ten years. While my brother took their old one and it still worked without ever needing repair. He also had a very old fridge that was my grandmas from the 60s. It worked until he moved away.
I have an old (maybe 15 to 20 years) dishwasher. It has a few mechanical buttons and a knob to select the wash cycle. Use it every few days. Still works perfectly. Wouldn't trade it for one of those new computerized pieces of junk that the now sell. Mine will outlast those. :-)

They could make see thru main doors if they wanted 2. And having cameras covering each shelf with a screen on the front would be great.
The most annoying thing 2 me about fridges is always having 2 open the door and poke around 2 see what you've got. I'd rather just view it on a screen on the front.
They could also make one with a revolving escalator style where motors move shelves up on one side and down on the other. You'd never have 2 bend over again! 😊

The woman is Bess Myerson. She won the Miss America pageant in 1945 and later became a NYC Commissioner and served further with several presidential commissions. She lived to the ripe old age of 90.
Thank you for that tidbit.
YOU SIR, answered the question I was thinking about!
@@Theomite I didn't mention that she was also gorgeous, but I figured you knew that already.
She also had a daytime talk show briefly.
A beauty pageant with a brain? Very commendable indeed!
Now that's how a ad should be. Explain and demonstrate your product.
Thats really amazing and full of features that any refrigerator need
This is what an ad should be. It talks about the performance of the product and doesn't try to guilt trip you into buying it.
Agree!
Yeah and no weird storylines or metaphors
I love how straight forward this advertisement is
I've argued for years that this would be such a breath of fresh air in the modern advertising landscape that the product would get a serious boost in sales
We settled for less, and asked for the wrong upgrades. Do you think boycott/market can adjust itself? Someone came up with this awesome design...and he was an early bird.
no bullshit, straight to the features because the product will sell itself. Now they need tons of bullshit and marketing tricks so we can buy their useless crap.
No porn, no dancing, no frivolity. And people where happy.
@@osmacar5331you sure about that?
They should bring this back in every fridge
This looks more advanced refrigerator as I have now😂😂
I bought a house in 2005 and the former owner left me a 1948 Kelvinator in the basement. Made in America. All steel. Still runs perfectly!!
Actually wow
Bet you couldn't get it out of the basement either!

Impressive but isnt it using a ton of electricity compared to new ones?

All of the above.
Women used to be this way normally. Now they're the opposite. 🗑️
But, you didn't see her before she took her curlers out and put her makeup on, not to mention the corsetry that squeezed her into that "classy" shape. Trust me, ordinary women, real women, didn't look like that!

@@Arbidarbthat's not always true sometimes you can't have both
@@jedivssith6491 It's true most of the time, and definitely with refrigerators. It would be easy as heck to make a nice looking modern fridge have these features.
@@clangboomsteam i believe their durability more than current one. nowdays i bough em only with plastic tray 😢
@@clangboomsteam And the worst part is, those old refrigerators only lasted 30 or 40 years! How pathetic is that? It saves a lot of energy to remanufacture a new unit every 5 years instead. Some of the new, fancy Chinese refrigerators are lasting almost 2 years! Even better! Our landfills aren't full yet. We must try harder!
Did anyone else notice how Practical & advanced that refrigerator is compared to Modern ones ?
This is how ads should be. Just a simple and clear explanation of what the product is. And the fridge is great too!
WTF how is it that this is so much better designed and more solid than the ones 60 years later?
Because companies make more money when their stuff breaks. Or when you get more money and need a better one because the cheaper ones all suck.
