    One thing I decided a long time ago is that unless I’m really loving something, I’m okay considering something done at 90-95% used. I don’t want to cut into things, take stoppers out, scrape the bottom, etc. I’d rather just move on to other things before they go bad!

  • @kass1736
    @kass1736 Před 2 lety +33

    I feel like if a product is 95% used up you should just call it done rather than pay to ship what is basically trash, but if you do want to keep it until it’s finished then maybe pack it in a makeup bag you take with you

    I know what you mean, this is why I like to call myself "an organic panner" and it helps me also just watch my ebbs and flows of my makeup preferences, I find it more exciting that way and more interesting - that being said, I just started my first project to try to focus on while also organically panning my stuff

    Tbh... if always wondered why you'd choose to use daily that jordanna bronzer you didn't seem to love when you have the beautiful CT bronzer you said you really liked.. of course I would never ask such a question lol
    Idk why this made me think about that.

    I only ran a year long project pan for myself for a little under 2 years. It was definitely a way for me to reduce the amount of makeup I had because I simply just had too much. But at the end of last year I decided that I was happy with my collection and didn't need or want to continue doing a year long project. I created a project for the spring season with only 4 items at a time that fell under the category: "had for a while barely used" and just gave myself usage goals. It's been a very fun way to pan instead. I'm done with that little project on tuesday and I'm excited to go back to just using whatever. But I'll probably create another little project in the future. I think it's a great idea to change it up for your preferences currently :D

      I like to do small seasonal pans as well, I set goals for number of uses. It's a good way for me to rotate through my collection.

  • @AlexandraNPutz
    @AlexandraNPutz Před 2 lety +5

    I tried a project pan once for a year and it wasn’t for me, as i was to focused on chosen items and got disappointed when their was no progress. On the other hand I love seeing pans in my make up products and get satisfied when I finish one. So now I use what ever I want and let it happen naturally. To track my progress I just write down what and when I finished an item and at the end of the year I look how many their were. So I‘m excited how your new way works for you.

  • @melanieward1185

    would love to see a makeup inventory by numbers in each category before and after the declutter! that would be interesting to see the difference

  • @alyasl.3350
    @alyasl.3350 Před 2 lety +16

    I used to think that there wasn't much difference between using something up (or using most of it) and not using it up because you've already bought it, but project panning taught me that there definitely is, because you learn the value of things. That is, if I already have something or a few of some category that works there's no need to buy another thing just to enjoy it or even worse, to enjoy trying it, when the things I have already work fine enough. That could be borderline panning punishment, which I think is an interesting point that you mentioned, but it also could be very healing, because while, yes, make should be fun, it can also be costly, and striking a balance is hard when the whole makeup industry is trying to convince you that the mere act of buying make up or buying makeup just to try is aslo super fun (which in can be, but it is not worth it for most people in my opinion). When in doubt I review my make up habits from before makeup youtube which are use things that are usable, only throw away duds. Also another point I think is very improtant is the differences between youtubers vs regural consumers even in the panning community. The former experience larger product turnover rate with pr/reviews/declutters (not always ofc it depends) which I still think would be an unhealthy practice to adopt as a regural consumer, hence it's often better to use up the things you've bought to prevent you from buying more, because then that would be even more "damage done".

    • @amandasjoberg463
      @amandasjoberg463 Před 2 lety +2

      I completely agree! Panning prevents buying more unnecessarily , it makes you realise what you already have and how long it will last you

    • @SarahRoseBeauty
      @SarahRoseBeauty  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes of course, I wasn’t implying that there’s no point to panning at all, or that we should just start buying excessive amounts of makeup. I was more so referring to forced panning of items that I’m not loving. I feel there’s no reason to force myself to use up a foundation I feel just “meh” about, when instead I could focus on using up one I love - either way, I’m using up the same amount of product. I just don’t see the point in obsessing over using up stuff for the sake of using it up.

  • @kristinelewis5373

    I’m so excited you made this change! It makes a lot of sense for how you prefer to use your collection seasonally, and seems like it’s more tailored to your actual habits and shows a lot of self awareness.
    I have never been able to really stick to a strict project pan because I don’t have the discipline for it lol, but also because I start to resent the products really quickly! It took me until last year/lockdown to really realize I only have 1 face, my getting ready time is sacred, and I want to enjoy every second of it, and that includes letting myself off the hook for some of my self-imposed rules regarding panning and not shaming myself as much for (gasp) decluttering/just letting go of things. It’s a delicate balance sometimes between that and our goals of being responsible with our collections, but putting your own joy first is so important!! Can’t wait for future pan videos!

  • @ericafait3082
    @ericafait3082 Před 2 lety +6

    I'm not a real project panner because I don't have too many products (besides eyeshadows 😅) and I end up using pretty much all my stuff without forcing me to. If there's anything I don't use it's cause I don't like it and I just give it to somebody else right away, but as a first rule I buy only replacement products. Anyway I think project panning is fun, but it can also be stressful, and it shouldn't be! You are definitely a very conscious consumer, so I don't think you'll have any problems switching back to a more "free way" of managing your makeup collection.
    Some of the Italian girls I follow are doing a project called #22inmeno. It's basically 10 products to pan/use up during the year plus 12 products to use 10 times, and when you used something 10 times you roll something else in. Almost all of them are enjoying a lot the 12 products to use 10 times part, because they are using their whole collection this way, rediscovering stuff they didn't even remember they loved!
    🥰🥰🥰

    So happy you're removing some of the shame based actions in your life (not that that was your only motivation obviously). Makeup is a fun, creative, and joyful outlet for me too. And it's nice to focus on that side of it.

  • @hayitscass
    @hayitscass Před 2 lety

    Hailey O does a similar concept… every quarter is a full reset of new products she wants to pan/use up or be able to decide if it’s a declutter item and then in the 4th quarter she goes back to everything from throughout the year and sees what she can get finished up. I definitely like this idea of a reset for each quarter because I think being stuck to the same products for an entire year or any significant length of time can be boring and discourage the use of other products

  • @gwhitcom

  • @villapulla

    I think it's so important to keep it fun for you! The easiest way to get tired of panning is thinking there's one specific way that you must follow even if it doesn't excite you at all.
    What works for me personally, is that I change which item categories I pan. For example, last year I had a face palette and a highlighter in my project, this year I have three blushes and no highlighters in my project.

  • @clothyoriginal
    @clothyoriginal Před 2 lety +8

    I think this is a good idea for you, you've basically been doing a non stop rolling pan for the past few years. Would you consider taking a longer break and then doing some of those shorter novelty types project pans like 5 by cinco de Mayo ect?

  • @Beautybytracilei
    @Beautybytracilei Před 2 lety +1

    A few years ago I stopped forcing myself to cycle through my collection. If I get something new and it’s all I want to use, then I use it, knowing that I’ll likely enjoy it the most then, not later. I don’t purchase as much as I used to. I found that forcing myself to use certain makeup was taking a lot of the joy out of the process.

  • @greenelephant6539
    @greenelephant6539 Před 2 lety +1

    I only panned casually. The biggest reason was that items like single eyeshadows and blushes take SO long to use up. I have the Milani blush in Luminoso and that thing will be here, I swear, until the end of time (and I love it). It became more like a chore and took the joy out of something I truly love to do- play with makeup.

    I have signed up for multiple projects in the pantastic ladies group and although the prompts are fun and its exciting going through my stash and finding something to go with a prompt I do not enjoy updating every month, its a nuisance to me.... However I do enjoy the other aspects like looking through my collection and finding something to go with a prompt and seeing what others chose, then rolling things out or mixing and matching and have found its encouraged me to experiment more with products which us alot fun... I get frustrated with it sometimes tho as I find that I suck at project panning as I never have a crap load of empties at the end of a month nor do I hit pan in my shadows often as I like to switch things up often....
    What I do is allow myself to go with whatever product my heart desires for that day while incorporating things in projects... usage goals are what I find myself enjoying alot and helps me rotate through things .... I think panning should be fun and not so strict with things ... The pressure in the panning community to use things up quickly is insane to me.... I like your thoughts and your plans and hope more people take this approach to it tbh...

I now have a much more manageable collection. But I also had a blush I wanted to buy for a long time and instead of being very stict with myself I just bought that blush and I don't regret it. I kind of feel that when you said that it's unattainable for you to pan everything you own. The reason being is that I also own Milani Sun Kissed and it took me 130 uses to use up completely. That means for over a third of the year, other products would be neglected for the average person. (I'm one of those minimalist where I have less than three products in most categories. I only had 1 contour/bronzer product when I was using it up.)
    I definitely wouldn't be able to be a minimalist if I wasn't so specific of what I like in a product, so kudos to you and other people that have fun playing around with formulas.
    IDK, in a way makeup is functional for me, but it's still fun because I love everything I own. It's about the process of putting it on that makes me happy. It's like painting, but way less permanent.

    I feel the same way as you with my own project panning journey the last two years. I did see Too Much Tash create a project where she's rotating her products in each category & uses them a certain number of times before putting a new product in the rotation that I would love to give a go myself. I don't think I'll intro it on my IG until next Jan, just to give me a break from panning for the rest of this year & start fresh in 2023.

    I think the no buy/low buy, tracking spending, etc do have their place, but I have similar views: I don’t feel like my collection is out of control, I trust myself to not overspend, panning just to pan really isn’t what makeup is all about. I think these changes to how you will structure project panning makes so much sense. And I also think your changes on how you think about your collection and decluttering will be really helpful too. I completely agree that you should be happy and you should enjoy your makeup. And if something is not working for you it needs to go. There is so much stress and negativity coming from outside, we don't have to add extra onto ourselves. I hope this makes makeup more enjoyable and I look forward to seeing your next update once you are settled. ❤️

    Your new plan for panning sounds like an excellent way to use and enjoy your products. I’ve been guilty of hate panning, and looking back it was such a ridiculous thing to do. Definitely use what brings you joy!

I’m also a project panner and sometimes force myself to use certain products like my Chanel tan de soleil it’s my oldest bronzer and it’s a cream too although everyone here on you tube loves it I’ve never really liked it , I’ve found a way of using it so I like it better then I once did but I will be ecstatic when it’s out of my collection ☺️,

That's some good panning! Once you've moved and are all settled in, you can always hit the reset button. But for now, pan what you can! (And don't forget to toss that trash!)

  • @mymakeupnonsense

    I love this entire video.
    I started panning a few years back because I thought it was a fun way to give some love to products and deter myself from buying a ton of makeup. Now, however, my purchasing habits with makeup is healthy and I don’t feel tempted to buy anything impulsively. I don’t even wear as much makeup as I used to, so it makes no sense to focus on (often oldest) makeup product and neglect the others the few times I actually wear any. I decided to keep a small amount I want to work on but after that I’ll probably move on the usage projects or just nothing at all. I want to see what I gravitate towards and use a lot when I have no self-imposed limitations.
    I’m proud of you for doing what is best for you regardless of any pressures you may face from being a content creator in a space where “successful” and fast panning is favored. You should do what makes you happy and enjoy makeup as much as possible.

    I have been here! Last year I hate-panned (and finished!) two full-size MAC lipsticks, and it was really crappy. I took the first three months of 2022 off, then started a new project with things I actually wanted to use (and included some gimmies, for motivation). I also started rotating my singles, keeping two at a time in my bag until I used them ten times. I think I might do something like that for all my makeup going forward - it seems very manageable and not at all like dry MAC matte lipstick purgatory. 😏

    I really like the idea behind your new approach! I started my makeup collection with more of a collector mindset so I accumulated quite a bit before I realized I needed to be more mindful, so I’ve always felt it excessive compared to most people. This was a good reminder to enjoy what I have and not be ashamed of my collection. I worked hard to be able to own this, I should use it how I want.

    For me my mantra with purchases and my collection amounts is only buy stuff that i know i will use, for example I don’t have any liners as i don’t wear them. So why would i buy them. i have no set goal of numbers like …. As long as i at least like everything i have than it gets to stay. This way i can try out new stuff but this way feels more freeing.
    I also do weekly makeup baskets so i can rotate my stash and use everything not only using a handful of products and leaving everything else to collect dust

    I have learned that I only like to pan for the following 3 reasons:
    1. Want to use it more - I do just a usage goal.
    2. I absolutely love it and want to use it
    3. Move it out of my collection - expiring soon, decide if I really like it, declutter.
    I also do not want to pan eyeshadows - I want to do something different every time I do my makeup. Panning eyeshadows feels like a punishment to me so I refuse to.

    I think your attitude is a healthy one There is a panner who I am ready to unfollow because I think their relationship with makeup is unhealthy - of course that is my opinion based on her inability to declutter and to pan broken, expired and less than flattering colors when she has a huge collection I want to support the panner as she is lovely but I feel uncomfortable sometimes I hope this comment is not perceived as cruel as it is not meant that way Best of luck with your move

    • @SarahRoseBeauty
      @SarahRoseBeauty  Před 2 lety +6

      I hear you! I think anything taken to extremes can become unhealthy and there’s a lot to unpack here in the project pan community. Panning can be a fun and helpful practice but it can also turn into an obsession or punishment for owning makeup that’s already been bought. At the end of the day panning should add to our enjoyment of makeup, not hinder it 💞

    I found that traditional panning just isn’t for me. I blame it on my adhd brain, but outside of… brow products maybe? I hate using the same products over and over. I like using different products in different combos and enjoying my full project.
    That being said, I *technically* have a full face project where I want to hit pan or use up my oldest products, but rather than focusing on them I just reach for those when I need a touch up or mix in with a different base, etc.
    I have been doing Deck of Panning and am really enjoying the prompts and sticking to 10-20 uses as goals so I am rotating through products often.

  • @rnschulz321
    @rnschulz321 Před 2 lety

    I love using products up! However, I absolutely would go crazy if I needed to track every usage. I don't cut any tubes open or remove any stoppers. That doesn't seem fun to me. Also if I buy lip colors that do not work or discover a dried up nail polish in my giant nail polish collection I have no qualms tossing it no matter how much is left. I will suffer a bit through some skincare or haircare products I don't care for much but those products usually go much faster and I do think it helps me consider my skincare and haircare purchases more, which is something I need until I get my collections to more reasonable sizes. I don't usually resent it. I'm saying all of this because we all pan differently. Don't agonize over products. They're not worth the stress.

    I have a much smaller makeup stash than you, and I often decide to "give up" on products! (I own 1 mascara, 1 eyeliner, 4 concealers, 1 foundation, 1 primer, 3 powders, 4 blushes, 3 palettes, 4 single eyeshadows, 1 brow powder, 2 brow gels, 10 lip colours, 1 lip liner, 2 highlighters, 1 setting spray) I especially do this with products I'm picky with like concealer and lip colours. My collection is small because I always want to be using my favourite things ONLY so anything that doesn't spark joy is banished!!!
    It's also a great lesson for the future too. I never buy lip stains anymore because I always end up using them a few times then decluttering. And I can remind myself of that when I'm shopping. I shop more effectively based on what I know I actually use up (ie. mascara, lip products, base products are all things I frequently run out of so I can confidently shop for those)
    Also in my mind simply "hitting pan" is project panning. Once you've done that you've essentially completed the project pan and any other use out of it is bonus material. I will only completely use a powder product up to the edges if I don't want to stop using it. But by the time you see that glint of metal you've essentially gotten your money's worth. This takes a lot of pressure off of me and doesn't bond me to a product for years, especially with eyeshadows.
